Let's turn to Leo "The Lip" Durocher for some insight here:

"I believe in rules. Sure I do. If there weren't any rules, how could you break them?"

Nothing like a quote from Durocher to put life back into perspective.  Those were the days...   Does that mean I'm old?   :o

You are old...and you're a Cub fan. ::)
That's a bad combination if you're looking for glory on this old sod during your lifetime. :'(
You've got slightly better odds that the Flying Dutchmen will be unfurling a banner before they eulogize you and FDF.  ;D

Ouch!  Goodnight, thou hast cut me to the quick!  (Actually, while still claiming to be a Cubs fan, this current season has sent me over the edge.  I may have to start following the wood whittling championships instead....yawn....)  What would Jack Brickhouse and Harry himself have to say about this season??? :-\

As to your heinously derrogatory remarks about my beloved Flying Dutchmen...time will have to tell, but I hold firmly to the HOPE that I'll see that banner from this side of heaven.   ;D

You're not such a good knight after all, now are you? ;)

Yup. 8)  You might not be a good knight, but you're quick!

Quote from: Flying Dutch Fan on July 12, 2006, 02:32:51 PMA guy I worked with (who is also a Cubs fan) always told me he couldn't die until the Cubs had won the World Series - that way he could go ice skating for all eternity   ;D

The Cubs joke Ryne Sandberg told during his HOF induction last summer is still my favorite:

A Cubs fan finds a magic lamp on a deserted beach. He rubs it, and a genie pops out. The genie informs the man that he will grant him one wish. The man says that he would like a peaceful resolution to the Israeli/Palestinian problem.

The genie unfolds a map of the Middle East, studies it for quite a while, and then says in a sad voice, "I'm sorry, but I just can't see any way to make that happen. Is there anything else you'd like to wish for, instead?"

"Yes. I'd like to see the Cubs win the World Series."

"Hmmm. Let me have another look at that map."

Wood whittling ... isn't that what Dr. Tim Kremchak has been doing to the right arm of a certain Cubs starter at regular intervals over the past eight years -- and may soon have to do again to his rotator cuff?

Quote from: Civic Minded on July 12, 2006, 05:01:48 PMWhat would Jack Brickhouse and Harry himself have to say about this season??? :-\

Jack Brickhouse was so preternaturally upbeat that he'd find something positive to say even if a tornado swept down Clark Street and uprooted the entire ballpark. As for Harry Caray, he saw enough bad baseball at Wrigley Field over the years to know exactly what to do: Utter PR banalities such as "you can't beat fun at the old ballpark," pronounce names backwards on the air to amuse himself (and sometimes mess up the names frontwards badly enough to make it sound as though he was pronouncing them backwards) -- and, if he got into the broadcast-booth cooler of Budweiser a little earlier than usual on a particularly inept day for the Cubs, start blasting players right and left with one of his patented bouts of shocking on-air candor. My friends and I used to refer to that as Harry's "Nasty Grandpa" alter ego.

News of interest to Hope fans on front page.

Hey Pat, whoever makes it to the Final Four those years better get there early.  I don't care what the sign says above the bleachers, the Hope fans will no doubt already be sitting there. (see Depauw '06).

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Hope would be a nice place for the men's final four but as I understand the men are locked into Salem, VA for a while.

I definitely had that thought too... but it would be a little small, I think. And Salem/Roanoke definitely have their charms, as random as they are.  :)

LOL!  Thanks for sharing, Scotsfan!

As to you, Mr. Sager, you now have me all misty-eyed over the good old days at Wrigley Field.  Who's heart doesn't get all warm and fuzzy at the thought of Harry Caray pronouncing names backwards and getting all slurry by the 7th inning stretch? :'(  Now that's baseball the way it should be!   :D

I always thought the duo of Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall was great.  They were both
brutally honest about the play on the field.  When I watched the Sox back in the late seventies I always hoped for a rain delay because Harry and Jimmy were more entertaining than the team.

The last men's Final Four drew 3435 so it would be cutting it close.

Due to the Hope v. Calvin rivalry, it seems like D3 hoops is big in west-Michigan.  Tickets would be at a premium for a D3 Championship at a facilty like DeVos.

I actually think that would be true in a lot of places in the midwest / great lakes.  All the more reason to have it here - but probably in a location with more seating.  Van Andel anyone?

Van Andel would be a cool spot but it is probablly very expensive.  The city of Grand Rapids would offer more entertainment to the visiting fans than Salem would.
