Or perhaps we should just call them what they are: the Defending MIAA Champion Knights?  8)

Or... the Defending MIAA Tournament Runner-up Knights?? 8) 8)

Hmmph.......after last March, we could have used a few pacifiers in here.  Maybe the Knight Club could be the Toddlin' Knights  ;D

Hmmm---  hmmmmmm.

13.  Bob Lanier, C  St. Bonaventure
14.  Dave Bing, G  (had a penchant for filling it up from outside-played for the Pistons).
15.  Sidney Moncrief, G, Arkansas (is this guy quick or what?)

Someone brought this up about 3 weeks.  I think Calvin will have a very good season, but it isn't going to be a piece of cake to not got used of Draayer and Trewella.  You're talking about the greatest 3 point shooter ever at Calvin, and one of the most consistent and  quick jump shooters .    It may take some time to adjust without those two.

And back to that starting 5 topic, goodknight, don't you think Snoeink will start?

FWIW, a bit of very early speculation on the starting five for Calvin in a few weeks.

Meckes at the 5
Mantel at the 4
Zoerhof at the 3
Griffin at the 2
Veldhouse at the point

Other formulations?

You seem to know the new recruits as well as anyone, GK.  I'll take your suggestion as a good possibliity.

So how does this team compare to last year's model? Zoerhof was playing well last year, and though he's not the three-point shooter that Draayer was, he brings other qualities to the frontcourt. I don't know anything about Griffin, but if he's among the top two of a strong recruiting class, and a shooter, he should fill the #2 spot well.

And Mantel will only start if he's got considerably more potential than Snoeyink, who was playing quite well last year. Freshmen rarely start right away. If he does start, that puts him in the class of Veenstra and Veldhouse, I suppose. (Any other recent freshman who started right way that I'm not thinking of?)

Though the Knights have lost 2 pretty solid performers in Trewhella and Draayer, I'm confident that they have the kind of personnel that can replace them. I haven't seen Griffin yet but more than one source tells me he can really fill it from beyond the arc and I think overall the Knights seem to have a very good shooting team. I don't know if Mantel will start right away but everyone raves about his offensive skills. I expect that Veltema will get a fair amount of PT coming off the bench and believe me, I know this kid can fill it. I suspect he will enjoy not being the focal point of other team's defenses like he was in high school. But how well the new players play and how much they contribute depends mostly on how quickly they adjust to the reality of having to play the kind of defense demanded by KVS. I have long thought that the biggest surprise that incoming players have to adjust to when going to the next level is not on the offensive end but on the defensive end of the court. Talented incoming players are usually recruited because they already have the game to play at the next level and they expect to be successful. But to stay on the court and be a consistent contributor requires the ability to understand how your coach wants you to play on the defensive end and that usually takes more time to learn.

It was merely a bit of speculation on an actual basketball topic (Pope Sac, we're trying to heed your admonition to post on matters involving our team, rather than whine, whine, whine about all things Hope  :))
The only thing that seems certain is that Veldhouse and Meckes will start.  I agree that the 4 spot is Snoeyink's to lose, but I've heard that Mantel is a freshman with the talent and court presence of a Veenstra or Veldhouse.  I would not be shocked to see him announced in the starting lineup on Nov. 17.  I really like Zoerhof's athleticism, and if it's true -- as I've heard -- that he's playing under control and making better decisions with the ball and on defense, you can be sure he'll see a lot of PT this year.  Hearing encouraging things about Griffin, too.
I agree with oldknight that Veltema is a true talent who may well work himself into a starting position at some point during the year, once he learns KVS's defensive system.
For the first time in a good while, Calvin is looking strong and deep in the low post.

You heard it here first folks... As last years Calvin College moniker (baby Knights) fades from our memory, a new an improved one is ready to take its place. From here on (or at least till next year's new nickname) the basketball knights will here by be know as "The Ripening Knights"

;) :D ;D

Dang, a conference championship, a second round tournament appearance and they haven't ripened yet.  This team could be scary.

Is Evan Hare healthy enough to play this year?

GoKnights68

Zoerhoff was one of my favorite players to watch last season.  He is just a good all around player, and made really smart decisions for being a freshmen.  He'll make a big impact on Calvin's team this year.

I'm sure he is, but he's not enrolled at Hope this year. Just working for the rent.
