FWIW, a bit of very early speculation on the starting five for Calvin in a few weeks.

Meckes at the 5
Mantel at the 4
Zoerhof at the 3
Griffin at the 2
Veldhouse at the point

Other formulations?

You seem to know the new recruits as well as anyone, GK.  I'll take your suggestion as a good possibliity.

So how does this team compare to last year's model? Zoerhof was playing well last year, and though he's not the three-point shooter that Draayer was, he brings other qualities to the frontcourt. I don't know anything about Griffin, but if he's among the top two of a strong recruiting class, and a shooter, he should fill the #2 spot well.

And Mantel will only start if he's got considerably more potential than Snoeyink, who was playing quite well last year. Freshmen rarely start right away. If he does start, that puts him in the class of Veenstra and Veldhouse, I suppose. (Any other recent freshman who started right way that I'm not thinking of?)

I don't know if he started right away, but Chris Prins?

(Pope Sac, we're trying to heed your admonition to post on matters involving our team, rather than whine, whine, whine about all things Hope  :))

Wow, didn't even know I was ordained.   I guess I should consider Ashabi for Sainthood.

Enlightened idea, as usual.
Just don't forget to keep issuing that occasional Papal Bull. 8)

Though the Knights have lost 2 pretty solid performers in Trewhella and Draayer, I'm confident that they have the kind of personnel that can replace them. I haven't seen Griffin yet but more than one source tells me he can really fill it from beyond the arc and I think overall the Knights seem to have a very good shooting team. I don't know if Mantel will start right away but everyone raves about his offensive skills. I expect that Veltema will get a fair amount of PT coming off the bench and believe me, I know this kid can fill it. I suspect he will enjoy not being the focal point of other team's defenses like he was in high school. But how well the new players play and how much they contribute depends mostly on how quickly they adjust to the reality of having to play the kind of defense demanded by KVS. I have long thought that the biggest surprise that incoming players have to adjust to when going to the next level is not on the offensive end but on the defensive end of the court. Talented incoming players are usually recruited because they already have the game to play at the next level and they expect to be successful. But to stay on the court and be a consistent contributor requires the ability to understand how your coach wants you to play on the defensive end and that usually takes more time to learn.

I agree we all know (especially Hope fans) that Caleb can shoot the 3 ball and Tyler has 10 times the athleticism as Draayer did.  I think the Knights will be very tough on the defensive end once again and they should have a nice mix of young and experienced talent.  I think the "Baby" Knights can stay for another year.

Hopefully Veltema and Griffin can hit some 3's this year as well.  And 10 times the athleticism as Draayer?  Draayer plays baseball and was second in rebounds I believe last season, but Tyler can problem jump higher and has faster reflexes.

It's official! Now released to the public:

Tall rosters, too!!! Maybe the tallest in recent memory for both? With the exception of 2 PGs @ Hope and 1 @ Calvin (who used to be @ Hope), everybody is 6-2 or over...Those create great mismatches when the Madonnas and Grace Bibles pop up on the schedule.

WOW! Calvin has 9 sophomores and no juniors and all three seniors are post guys. Looks they have quite the backcourt for the next three years. As for Hope, I've never seen so many freshman in their program, don't they know they'll get cut for transfers next year? haha.

Calvin's roster has an error; Derek Griffin is a junior.

Is Kotsier going to see the floor this year for Calvin?

I notice Hope's JV has a kid from California, Colorado, Montana, Minnesota and 2 from Illinois........thats odd for Hope.

I suspect Griffin doesn't have enough transferable credits from MCC to be more than a sophomore academically. But since he has already played two years of college ball  he is a junior eligibility wise.

that very well could be. I just saw the roster and wasn't sure, so I asked a player on Calvin's team and he told me that Griffin was a junior.

I heard from someone that some Hope players got in trouble.  Is this true?

I'm sad to report its true.

Apparently around 2 am Saturday morning, three Hope players were caught outside Graves Hall painting the anchor Maroon and Gold.  We're all shocked and dismayed by this incident.

The 3 players were Stefan Rheinsthreys, Brian Skreens and Igor Dunksovernites.  Thats why you don't see them on the roster, apparently Glenn has laid down the hammer and made these three an example to the others.  Apparently its some team hazing ritual, after painting the anchor they take them out in the woods and paint the players maroon and gold give theam a quarter and tell them to find their way back home.

Its been going on for year, just one of Hope's many dirty little secrets.
