Hope had tremendous depth last year and GVW only used them in blowouts.  He shortened his bench in the close games that they had last year.

Actually as the season goes on the bench gets shorter, its been that way at Hope for every year I can remember.  It has little to do with the score on the board.  Some years its driven me nuts, last year included.

I believe they abandoned that concept last year...seemed to be more of a motion game.

I'll yield to you on this one, I'm not much of an x's and o's guy, but it sure looked like the same idea of 1 on 1 basketball.

.........and so we're clear I wouldn't be sad to see the offensive side of that philosophy thrown out or altered to include some good old fashioned run them off the floor old school Hope basketball. ;)

Well the Sentinel had an article today about Hope basketball, I won't bother linking it since it would have been more efficient to just list the Hope roster.  ::)

But as always Glenn is optomistic.

Brandon Crawford's playing in Germany and playing well

Kzoo roster
http://www.kzoo.edu/sports/mb/mb06-07/mbrstr06-07.html

Couple of interesting games on their sched,  Elmhurst Dec 16 in Chicago.  Elmhurst also plays Albion and Alma.

They could get a shot a Grinnell in that Elmhurst tournament on the 17 or UW-Whitewater

On Dec 29 they play at Otterbein

Open the MIAA with Hope in Kzoo......without the students, I consider this a fortunate break for the Dutchmen.

Olivets roster
http://www.olivetcollege.edu/sports/m_basketball_roster.htm

No Seniors, and I only recognize a couple names on that roster.

Play a couple games of interest, SGVU and at Baldwin Wallace.  also get a trip to Vegas..........could end up playing Marieta OH two weeks in a row.  Once in Vegas  once in Ohio.  Also will play Carthage in Vegas, Carthage plays Hope and Calvin.

This will be the 3rd year in a row for K and Elmhurst. The last two have been doozies. In 04' K came back from an 18 pt deficit to sneak out a 74-72 win in Chicago. Last year at the Rolla Dome, Pat Clancy hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send it into OT, Elmhurst hit a buzzer beating put back to put it into 20T, eventually winning 88-78.  After that game, I believe there was a bit of talk on here amongst K fans of a certain Elmhurst  All-American who enjoyed to flop.  Bring on the rubber match, I guess
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

And as seems to be the norm, Tim Partridge was overlooked entirely.  This drives me nuts.  Am I the only person that sees that good things happen when he's on the floor?  I'm looking forward to what he can add to the mix this season...

Glad you phrased this the way you did.   Others have observed this.  It does tend to make Hope more predictible, and is perceived by some as being "unresponsive" to game situations.  :)   After all GVW's years and sucess one shouldn't  expect to see a change, but can understand your frustration.

The knights' 2006-07 season preview is up. It doesn't say who the starters will be, but it does mention Veldhouse, Meckes, and Snoeyink as "returning starters."

It attributes much of last years' success to good team chemistry, and suggests a cautious optimism for similar success this year, if the chemistry is good again.

The preview also says that the MIAA will be very competitive, and there could be as many as four ranked teams this year. Which team would be the fourth? Last year Kalamazoo was the closest, according to the Massey rating, at #111.

Does anyone know when any Calvin open scrimmages are taking place?

I didn't know Matt Veltema led Michigan high schoolers last year in FT percentage. That's very impressive especially when you consider the fact that he went to the line a lot last year.

4 ranked would be a stretch, but your right in surmising Kzoo is the 4th team.  I expect Kzoo to be pretty good this year, they'll mess up someone's title chances in Kalamazoo.  If Kzoo gets off to a great start they could get a peak in the polls but I think they have to beat Hope or Calvin to get a serious look in the D3hoops poll.

Unless there's something I don't know about Adrian, Alma, Olivet and ThreeState Kzoo is my favorite for the #4 spot.

SKOT

From the Calvin preview:

"A two-year starter in the post, Meckes has developed into a Division III version of the NBA's Ben Wallace, swatting away shots in the post, collecting key rebounds and converting a high number of his field goal attempts with his quick-leaping ability."

I'm not sure that Ben Wallace is the guy to talk about in a high FG% context...Wallace is a meger .482 lifetime shooter.  Last I checked, that's pretty aweful for an NBA center...

I'm just glad Meckes doesn't have a FT% like Ben Wallace.
