Sac:   :) Slow down big guy!  In my file copy of the architect's drawing of the proposed fieldouse dated 9-15-06 it clearly indicates, "Proposed Spoelhof Fieldhouse".  So really old news.  :)

Ah, but was it ever posted here before?

For those of us relatively new to MIAA lore, who is (was?) Spoelhof?  Beloved old-time coach? Big donor? Other?

Spoelhof was a long-time president of the college about two or three presidents back. He's in his 90s but he still attends basketball games.

There's already a "Spoelhof Center" on campus -- the administration building. I don't know if there are other Spoelhofs involved but it may well be.

Mr. Ypsi

DK, thanks!  Based on EMU campus buildings, I should have thought that ex-president was a likely possibility!

I noticed that the DeVos family recently gave $1.2m to Kuyper College. At some point I expect southwestern Michigan to secede from the rest of the Great Lakes State and change its name to DeVos.  ;)

Please God no.  The state needs a rest from that name for a while. Finally, the one thing that the DeVos money couldn't build, a winning campaign.

We already get into enough trouble on this board when we limit our arguments to BB. Let's not bring politics into our discussions too. :o :P

Easy there Oldknight.  If I was to bring politics into it, my guess is that I would certainly burn in hell for anything I'd write  ;) .  I just wanted to respond to Mr. Sager's comments about the DeVos name and SW Mich.  My wishes are that the only time I hear it now is when there's a home Hope game.

Mr. Y.   President Spoelhof was in office when the Knollcrest campus was purchased back in 1956.  He was also in office for many of the initial buildings, and remains active in campus affairs.  During WW2 he was in the predessor to the CIA.  He is a real class gentleman.  The entire HPER facility is probably going to carry the Spoelhof name.  The swim/dive venue was named Bergsma before, and suspect it will retain that name.  There is some speculation that the new arena, and track/tennis facility may be named at some future time.  My guess on the Spoelhof name maybe the connection one of his son's has with the Prince family in Holland.  One hears lots of rumors regarding large donors.

Anyone see the Hope scrimmage last night? Any thoughts?

I am a student and saw the entire scrimmage.  Hope will run at every opportunity and can really shoot the ball.  They will however have some trouble with any size down low.  Hope will score a lot and give up a lot.  Stephen Cramer, Jesse Reimink, and Tim Partridge shot well.  VanSolkema didn't score, but handled the ball well and led the offense well.  Freshmen Kratz played well, showed a good shot.  Transfer big men Osburn and Dykgraaf played well defensively, but did not do much offensively.  Overall,  Hope will be exciting to watch, but is most likely not as good as last year's team.  All my opinion obviously.

How did Stefan Rheinsthreys, Brian Skreens, and Igor Dunksovernites look in that scrimmage?

Good to see those guys still getting some love. ;D

(Way off topic)
Well another chapter in the adventures of Sac was written this past weekend with a nice trip to Bloomington, Indiana.........or as I'll forever refer to it "The Anti-Columbus".  Nice people, I wasn't told I s*** or to F'off because I happened to be wearing a Michigan sweatshirt once, I was even told to drive home safely.  :o Parked about 200 yards from the stadium for FREE.  Yes, Indiana is a different place when it comes to Big 10 football.......GREAT hotdogs too. ;)........women were easy on the eyes as well.......oh, to be 21 again. ;)

The soundsystem was a little heavy on the John Mellancamp tunes, but hey the guy donated a nice indoor football to the University so I'm sure I can forgive them for that.  It was also a little humerous to hear the IU students belt out the lyrics to Jack and Diane when NONE of them were born when that song hit the airwaves.  It was ok though I like a little JCM every now and again.

I had a chance to wander around Assembly Hall a little bit, a place that truely smells of history.  Saw all the Big 10 trophies, and National Championship trophies and the hundred pictures of IU all-americans.  Quite a few who seemed like they were at Indiana for about 6 years.  For a building thats about 40 years old it really doesn't look that old.  I was a little surprised to see some nice 40 inch pictures of Sir Bobby tucked away in a stairwell, but there wasn't much mention of him other than those photos.  I also saw the interior of the press room where most of the "incidents" went down.  They should dedicate that room to BK, hah.

What was funny was despite the locked doors to the arena itself, you cold get a small glimse looking through the crack between the doors.  Still awesome, and the line of Michigan fans trying to get a look was pretty funny too, it was like we were looking into the Taj Mahal of Big 10 basketball........sacred ground.

Honestly Indiana has some of the nicest facilities for all sports in the Big 10, and their football stadium has more seats between the endzones than Michigan, very fan friendly.  I was pleasently surprised by the place and the geography dispelled some of my personal myths about Indiana.  I would do it again in a heartbeat, but I'd make sure I had long undies next time.

PS There really was no point to this post, other than me not being able to sleep.

PS II.....I stood next to Mike Hart and Lamar Woodley, they're each no more than an inch taller than me.........both however are about 100 times stronger and 10 times faster........and in Lamar's case, 1000 times meaner.

Mr. Ypsi

Judging from his yards after contact, I'd guess that Mike Hart may be at least 100 times meaner too!  I'd estimate he has at least 250 yards rushing, dragging defenders along with him!
