With Hope and Calvin looking as if they might actually be playing in this 'Name That Bank' Classic, when was the last time they actually met in a nonconference tilt?  I'm too tired to do the research...

I am pretty sure it would have been last year's NCAA tourney game at DeVos.  The one with the Oscar nominated last second charge call.  ;D ;D ;D ::)

Massey power ratings are not very accurate yet, with only 7 games recorded for these teams, but they give Aquinas a power rating of about -14 and Cornerstone about 5. Using last year's figures for Calvin and Hope, that would make Hope a 13 point favorite over Cornerstone and Calvin a 24-point favorite over Aquinas on neutral courts.

whats the website that has those rankings?

Ah, yes. This poster remembers. In the first round games, Calvin knocked off a WIAC conference school, and Hope (perhaps licking chops looking forward to another chance to add to the above-mentioned rivalry), shot the lights out and blew my WLC Warriors right out of DeVos.  ;)

(Just as a side note, Lakeland, MSOE or Edgewood should have been there on better overall record, but the first 2 of those squads lost before they could get to the LMC tournament final, and WLC beat Edgewood with late clutch shooting in the final.
At one point WLC had a 4-6 in-conference record--just before going on a 7-game winning run. That LMC men's post-season tournament rarely went as expected, anyway. Goes to show, as Murphy's law states, "the battle doesn't always go to the strongest, nor does the race to the swiftest, but that's the way to pick!") :o ???

(Now that WLC's in NathCon, it may be a while, with no automatic bid this season, before a similar playoff match-up.)

I was shocked to see Buck Riley still coaching at Adrian. I thought with the improvements going on he would be gone. He is a anchor in the program and  will destroy as always a good team with his lack of coaching abilty. When is enough enough.  They now have a great replacement on staff get rid of the same ole same ole and start fresh. Its the only hope for this team!!!!!!

The knights defeated Aquinas 81-65. In the first half, there were lots of defensive lapses on the part of the knights, but both teams shot well. It was close the whole way, with the knights pulling out a 41-39 lead with a shot at the buzzer by [guess who]. The knights' 8 for 10 on three-point attempts kept them in the half.

The knights' defense tightened up in the second half, holding Aquinas to 26 points, while the offense kept clicking. The knights have made more than 50% of their shots in every game so far. There were four knights in double figures: Griffin with 17, Veldhouse 14, Chappel 13, Meckes 12. The knights looked about equally good with their first 5 on the floor or the second five.

Calvin v. Hope in November! This might be a good time for anyone who wants to see a Calvin/Hope game but can't normally get a ticket. Students are out of town and no one really planned on this game.

Notes:
* Veltema played and looked good
* Only 13 turnovers this time!
* Meckes maintained his status as the MIAA's most accurate shooter -- both 2-point and 3-point goals (!)

CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 24, 2006

Calvin/Hope Matchup Set For Select Bank Championship Game

MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the first time in the 11-year history of the Select Bank/Hall of Fame Classic, Calvin and Hope will not only meet, but also face each other in the championship game. The two rivals will meet for the 162nd time this Saturday night in a storied rivalry that spans 84 years.

Calvin and Hope advanced to the championship game with first round victories on Friday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Hope defeated Cornerstone 80-76 while Calvin defeated Aquinas 81-65. Saturday's championship game is scheduled to tip off at 8:00 p.m. Saturday's championship game will mark the first time since the 1980-81 season that Calvin and Hope will meet in a non-conference game, preceeding the MIAA regular season. The two teams met in December of 1980 at a tournament hosted by Central College in Pella, Iowa. Calvin won the game 85-66.

Calvin holds an all-time series lead of 81-80 against Hope but the Flying Dutchmen are coming off a 2005-06 campaign where they defeated the Knights in three out of four meetings.

Interesting night of hoops inside the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Hope looked solid and deep against C'stone, and Calvin wore down AQ in the second half to win with surprising (to me) ease.
Always good to see (and schmooze) with Sac -- and a true delight to meet bballmom.

Does anyone have any idea on how crowded it will be tomorrow for the game?  I know not as busy as the Calvin-Hope games in January and February but still pretty crowded?  How long of lines for tickets?  What's the situation with the game before?  Will the Aquinas and Cornerstone fans just move to the top when their game is done or  leave?

I was not there tonight, so I don't know much how it will be run or how busy it will be.

Thanks in advance.
