I'm going to have to take up this Hudsonville Ice Cream thing with the HIC powers that be!  He's a friend of FDF's and mine -- but all this support for Calvin makes me think he needs an orange and blue tie for Christmas!   ;)

(He'll be delighted to know that his product is getting so much "air time" here on d3, though!)  ;D

Hey all you Knight fans.  Eat a lot of ice cream for me tonight.   I won't be at the game, but Mr. Mantel and Tim will be there (the youngest of our Gus Macker squad).  I have a good feeling about the game tonight, but I could be focused too much on the ice cream at half-time.  Hopefully, I'll see a number of you in Chicago.  Go Knights!

An HIC man wearing an orange and blue tie would be distasteful. ;D

Calvin wins the Icecream social

Calvin 77 Aquinas 68

AQ was within 7 with about 4 or 5 minutes to go and missed a couple chances to cut it closer, Calvin then went down and hit what was described as a prayer at the shot clock........radio's words not mine.  Calvin rolled from there and got it back to a 16 point lead.  Calvin held.

Sounds like the Knights played the 2nd half like they had to much ice cream at the half, I turned it on and Calvin had a 16 point lead.

....waiting pencively for that Alma/Elmhurst score.

bluejaybacker1

Elmhurst 74
Alma 66

EC was up by 26 at half time. 43-17.

Alma outscored them 49-31 in the second half.

The Knights played a bit better on the defensive end tonight, challenging more AQ shots from the perimeter than they were able to do in their previous three losses.
KVS did some serious platooning toward the end of the game on the offensive possessions.
Dustin Smith played a very nice game for Calvin, to complement Veldhouse's 21 and 16 from Meckes.
Mr. Basketball, David Kool, was sitting courtside tonight across from the Calvin bench, surrounding by some beefy buddies.
Could we see a mid-season transfer? 8)
Or was he just checking out his former Sailor buddy, Jordan Torres, who plays in the AQ backcourt? ::)

Never, not even for a Mr. Basketball.

A rather uneven game at the Fieldhouse tonight with that uneveness exhibited by both players and officials. The Knights started out looking like they would win easily with only the post player for Aquinas appearing to be motivated enough to compete.  At about the 14 minute mark the score was Calvin 16, Lazic 8. Then the the game took one of those turns you see occasionally where a combination of better play by Aquinas along with poor Calvin shooting and decision making, aided by a series of officials' calls that just  didn't go Calvin's way led to a 13 point run for the visitors. That run culminated in a in play where Zoerhof got raked by 2 defenders causing him to kick the ball out of bounds. No foul was called,  Zoerhof objected a bit too strongly for the ref's taste, and Tyler got T'd up.

At that moment I recalled a similar run in last year's game against Albion at the Fieldhouse which ended in a T on KVS. That T was immediately followed by a series of calls that went Calvin's way and a run of points for the Knights so I was interested in seeing what might happen next in tonight's game. Sure enough, after the FT's were shot and Aquinas inbounded the ball, the same ref who missed the rather obvious Aquinas foul immediately made a palming call on the Saints ballhandler. I know refs are making a point of trying to cut down on all the carrying of the ball that goes on but, come on, that palming call was really weak. I can't prove it but I'm convinced that was a makeup call for the Knights. Anyway, it did seem to wake them up and Calvin went on to score the next 9 points to take a lead they would never lose.

Calvin did do a better job of defending the post the rest of the game, largely due to the fact that they KVS finally settled on using Meckes as the primary defender on Lazic. I know I sound like a broken record when I say this but Josh is simply a superior interior defender. He can shut down a post player without getting much help side defense. Aquinas helped the Knights by not shooting particularly well from the arc.

A couple other thoughts. There was a David Kool sighting who was there either for the free Hudsonville Ice Cream or to watch Jordon Torres, his former teammate. There was also a Mike Turner sighting, no doubt to get an up close and personal view of this year's edition of KVS's crew. Finally, bballmom will be pleased to know that Mr. Mantel and Tim did nothing to embarrass the family, even after John got ripped on a call  while defending the low post.  ;)

How in the name of Michael Jordan did Trinity Christian manage to secure the United Center for their game next Friday afternoon against Calvin?

Looks as though I'll get to see the Knights this season after all.

It'll be good to see the Dutchmen at home for the first time tonight.  While its a pretty sure win over Grace Bible its still a home game.

Grace is just coming off a 3 game win streak all over bible schools which ups their total to 4 on the year.  Aquanas beat GB by 26 Cornerstone by 35.

The other matchup is Goshen v Madonna, both teams are also struggling with just 4 wins each I believe.  Last year I thought Goshen was a pretty decent team, playing well in one of the Holiday tournaments here in town.  However, the Maple Leafs have graduated a bunch of guys from last year and this year they sport a roster with 7 Freshman.

Madonna is also struggling coming into the tournament, unfortunately my computer and Madonna's website don't jibe for some stupid reason so I don't have a very good idea about Madonna.  I kind of feel like the opener tonight is  a toss up.

I fully expect Hope to win this tournament, hopefully handily.   Mostly I'll be looking at HOW Hope plays  ie defensive intensity, execution in crucial moments.  Hopefully we'll see some good minutes for some guys who haven't played much.

Game of the night though is Albion vs  Finlandia............played at St. Ignace High School.  Looks like the two schools decided to meet in the middle......this is an in-region game under the new criteria.  Nice drive I bet too............but I'm sure its no picnic coming from Houghton either.

St. Ignace has become my stopping off point for my growing regularity of trips to the UP.  I hope the team stays at the Super8 on US 2 and get a room with a view of the bridge............Nice! 8)

Trinity Christian and Calvin get a neutral court at the United Center..........Albion gets St. Ignace High School. ;D

I should, hope um, expect that to be the case. Rough estimates based on Massey ratings: Hope by 38 over Grace Bible, Goshen by 7 over Madonna. Then Hope by 24 over Goshen.
