I have a quesiton for you basketball posters.  I posted this over on the football section.  I think it is great that Wheaton was able to play Northwestern (or rather that the Big Ten school scheduled a DIII school, as Northwestern does - didn't they play IWU too??).  However, how is it that they are allowed to do that as a regular season game as opposed to listing it as an "exhibition game" (perhaps it was listed as the latter, although admittedly, I have not checked on that).  I thought (although am probably mistaken) that DI teams were allowed to schedule lower division teams as "exhibition games" only now.  For example, Michigan and Michigan State play DII Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech and Grand Valley at the beginning of the year and these are billed as "exhibiition games"; although a couple of years ago, Albion played Eastern Michgian in a regular game.  Is there a rule about this or is it just left up to the particular DI school as to what other non-conferene games they want to schedule during the season?  Any info on this from you basketball guru's is greatly appreciated!!!

No. Northwestern hasn't played Illinois Wesleyan since the early '90s.

There is no rule forbidding a D1 team from playing a lower-division NCAA school as a regular-season contest. Preseason exhibition games don't count towards records (although they're counted towards the 25 games D3 teams are allowed to play prior to conference tournaments), but there's no rule that says that they're the only forum for a D1 school to host a lower-division NCAA team.

That being said, Air Force has no business scheduling Colorado College in a regular season game, esp this far into the season. I cannot understand what purpose it would serve. The Tigers are not going to prepare the Falcons for the Mountain West.

I believe I recall pictures of IWU playing U of Illinois in Shampoo-Banana last year, that's likely the game he was thinking of.

This is a cross-town rivalry; it should have the effect of raising CC's profile among the casual Colorado Springs sports fan; it probably provides a nice paycheck for CC; it should help CC's recruiting in Colorado; and I'll bet the Tiger players are thrilled to have a chance to play in this game.  There's lots of arguments against playing games like this, but there's 5 reasons to play it, all just off the top of my head.

What Air Force gets out of it, if anything, is another question...

Shampoo-Banana  :D  I'll have to save that one for a potential trip to watch some football next fall.  Good one.

The Illinois/IWU game was an exhibition game.

I'm with Stinger here, no major conference D1 program has any business playing a D3 team.    Its nice for the D3 program and maybe in Wheaton's  case even better since its a local school that can bring fans and make it an event.  I can understand the occasional matchups with say a MAC or MWC school etc like we've seen with Albion/EMU and way back in time Hope/CMU but those matchups should be few and far between.  I think these games should remain exhibitions for the most part.

Colorado College already gets plenty of exposure as one of the 2 Division 1 hockey programs in the state, and a pretty darn good one at that.  I'm sure the casual Colorado Springs sports fan is well aware of CC's existance.  Whether they know they play basketbal is another thing. :-\

Another thought.....

Maybe yesterday's Wheaton game will convince a Tribune beat writer to attend today's Calvin/Trinity Christian clash at United Center.....but I doubt it.

I'm all for the exhibition games.  I would have loved to lace it up with Western in a preseason game. I'm sure it was great for the CC players really enjoyed the opportunity (probably not being down 30-0). D-I coaches are crazy to schedule a game like this.

CC is also D-I in women's soccer.

Trinity scoreless last 6+ minutes of the half.  Calvin was down 7 earlier, they have
picked up the defensive intensity in the latter part of the half.
