The newest D3hoops.com poll has Hope at #19, Calvin would be #31.

Interesting thats Hope's 2 losses come to teams ranked #17 Wheaton, and #18 Carthage.  Both close losses.

Calvin's 3 losses come to #17, 18 and 19.

And the Hope Women stole a first place vote to edge even closer to the top ranking.

Few thoughts

------PNC"s coach was a pretty intense guy, a couple times I thought he would suit up and show his guys how to do it right.  However if you follow the CCIW Chat he gets the Grey Giovanni award for poor sportsmanship.  Shut up when the other team is shooting FT's coach.

In the first couple of minutes last night, PNC didn't block out the shooter on a free throw.
A coach telling his guys to block out the shooter when the shooter has the ball in his hands doesn't get him the label of "poor sportsmanship" in my opinion.  This isn't golf. Hope is going to face a lot tougher free throw situations than 1 man calling to his team "who's got the shooter"?

It's one thing for the opposing coach to call out, "Who's got the shooter?" when the ball is in the shooter's hands. It's quite another for a coach to shout something while the shooter is actually in the motion of shooting his free throw. And that is what we gripe about in CCIW Chat regarding Augustana coach Grey Giovanine and his poor sportsmanship.

You're right. It isn't golf. Opposing fans make a raucous production out of distracting opposing players when they're shooting free throws, and that's probably been going on since Dr. Naismith nailed the peach baskets to the balcony railing in the YMCA Training School gym. But this is a head coach we're talking about, not fans.

Not to start an argurment.

When it happens once or twice because the coach is coaching hard, its excusable............when it happen every single time its poor sportsmanship.  Thats what I felt was happening.  JMO it was Giovanniesque

Pat Stegeman (steg 30) never did dunk in a game.

Big gong for me.........of course I meant Pat Stegeman :-[

I forgot a very important moment in the Hope game that ultimately lead to the T on PNC's coach.  VanSolekema hit a three while a foul was being called on a PNC player for basically plowing through a Hope screen.  If we had replay I don't think the basket would have counted.  It was a critical point unfortunatley Hope only got 1 of the 2 FT's, but it was still a 4 point play.

From my vantage point (straight on length of court) I thought DVS hadn't started his shooting motion when the whistle was blown.  It was bang/bang and a tough call.  I believe Kooiker was in the middle of that one.

PNC's next timeout the coach tried to spend the whole timeout talking with Kooiker at the FT line.............eventually Joppe came over and escorted the coach back to the box.  I think at that point both the coach and Kooiker had had enough of each other.  It wasn't much later that the T was called.

Interesting little drama.

If he's doing it every single time, then, yeah, it's obvious that there's more to what he's doing than simply relaying instructions to his players.

Also, I think that if you lose Survivor Pool you should be required to type the word "Giovaninesque" in every single one of your posts.  :D

------Steve Kratz threw one of the best crosschecks I've ever seen in a basketball game.  Deserved foul.  A little blood but nothing to serious that a plastic mask won't protect.  It was pretty physical for a few minutes.

Sac, you accuse a coach you have seen once in your life of poor sportsmanship, but yet you celebrate  Kratz delivering a blow( with both arms extended) that knocks an opposing player flat on his ass.  Kratz's "crosscheck" (i.e. cheapshot) could have easily been called a flagrant foul.  It seems that your definition of  "poor sportsmanship" is defined by the jersey color of your team.

The PNC coach was a lot less animated when talking to the officials than GVW was.  One of his assistants was yelling at the officials about a charging call against PNC and he told him the ref made the right call.  I thought the coach conducted himself well and for you to compare him to someone (Giovanni) who you may have witnessed many times is unfair.

I had also forgotten that play.  I think you are right that play played a role in the T.  I believe the PNC  coach thought he was getting "homered."   In the second half Hope was in the bonus at around the 13 minute mark and had only been called for 1 team foul themselves.

Calvin's SID sent this out this morning.

Two new URLs - www.calvinhope.com and www.hopecalvin.com - both lead fans to a site that includes the history of The Rivalry, stats from the 162 games played between the two schools in men's basketball and, of course, all kinds of info on where fans across the country can watch the first game of 2007 live.

The intersesting thing about the history of the "GAME" is that Hope has won or tied
every decade that the game has been played except the 1970's.  Calvin was 21-0
in that decade.

Hope's collective record in the 70's was 101-118 for a paltry  46.1%.  I have to assume that was their worst decade.

As down as Hope seemed to be there were still 6 games decided by less than 5 points during that span.

Calvin almost had another long run of 17 games if it hadn't been for the 1991 Hope team with Eric Elliot and Wade Gugino that took two and broke up a 15-2 run by the Knights.

Since 1995 Hope holds a 21-11 edge.........I'll take 2 of 3 every year. ;D

......of couse its dead even this century.

Final from the Orlando Tournament:

Buffalo State defeats Albion
No details available yet---Sorry

Dark Knight

Looks like Olivet is making a run at getting out of the cellar of the MIAA. This has to be one of the strongest 1-6 teams in DIII. Well, I guess they are 2-6 now and the MIAA site hasn't been updated.

They lost by 3 at Baldwin-Wallace (6-2). They lost by 6 at Defiance (7-2). They did better than Calvin against Carthage. Now this morning they defeated Bridgewater VA (4-4).
