Attention:  Those planning to attend the Mose Hole Classic next weekend in Wooster, OH, featuring Wooster, Calvin, UW-La Crosse, and Ohio Northern:

Two brief announcements:

1. In lieu of admission to the "Mose" Hole/Kiwanis Classic, fans can bring in two new or gently-used clothing items for one ticket, four clothing items for two tickets, etc. The clothing items will benefit Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes counties.  (This is from the Wooster web site.  I presume that one ticket is for one session, i.e. Friday or Saturday but not both, but I'm not sure.  Bring four gently-used items just to be sure; Goodwill can certainly use them!  :))

2.  Some of us are planning to gather at the Olde Jaol Tavern Brewing Co. downtown on Saturday afternoon, prior to the consolation game.  I hope I can persuade Pat Coleman, publisher of D3Hoops.com and D3Football.com, to join us there.  So if you want to say hello to Pat and some of your fellow posters (and lurkers), please plan to join us.  I figure I'll be there around 3pm for a late lunch.  The Olde Jaol is at 155 W. North St., at the corner of Walnut, and can be reached at 330-262-3333.  Here's a link to a Yahoo! map, or you can PM me for driving directions.  Hope to see you there!

And it was really that ugly.  The Britons comittted 25 turnovers, and looked (well to put it plainly) they looked pretty horrid.  They reminded me of what a lot of teams look like in their first game of the season.  Out of sync, like they're not all running from the same playbook, and no defensive intensity (which is a shock for an Albion team).  We only stayed until the 13 minute mark of the second half (game started late because an earlier game went into overtime, plus dad-in-law was buying dinner, so I wasn't going to be late).  Some stats & observations

-  I was suprised by the Albion starters - Clark, Holms, Cash, Yancey, and Way

- 2 minutes in the game was tied at 5-5.  Elmhurst then goes on a 13-0 run to make it 18-5, then Albion went on an 8-0 run to get back to 18-13.  With 4 minutes left in the half, the Brits got it down to 1 point, 23-22, but Elmhurst finished the half on a 10-2 run.  33-24 at the half.

- Elmhurst continued the run in the second half, 15-4 in the first 7 minutes, to make the score 48-26 with 13:13 to go.  That's when we left.  Obviously it continued, with the 30 point loss.

- Elhurst looks to be a decent team, but I would judge them (based on 2/3 of a game) to finish close to or behind both Wheaton and Carthage.

- This location was really strange - a gym in a giant sports complex, with only 4 rows of bleacher seats on one side, and then only 2/3 of the length of the court.  The number of fans Hope had in Florida a few years back would have overfilled the stands.

All in all, not a waste of time, but still very disappointing, from a team you always expect to be good.  I would not be surprised to see these guys around .500 in the league.

Civic says "Albion had that deer in the headlight look that Calvin had earlier this year. While one or two plays were executed in what we would consider traditional Albion style (well done), most of the time they seem to revert to individual rather than team play, not knowing how to gel as a team.  The coaching staff seemed to accept that that's they way it is going to be"

Spartan Fever we missed you!!

It was kind of wierd to be at a basketball game with lots of spectators in shorts   ;D

Right back atcha, FDF and CM. Enjoy the tropics, and congrats on a quarter-century of bliss, albeit tinted orange. ::)
Meanwhile, we'll try to heat things up for you in the greater Grand Rapids area by, say, Jan. 13. ;)

Wishing everyone a merry christmas.   Have a nice little week in Naples planned over the New Year, inc 4 rounds of golf. Unfortunately, I'm not getting back until the 4th, which means Im missing the Kzoo/Hope game at the Rolla Dome.   I'll have to dial in while Im sipping on the rum runners.

Safe travels.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Shoot, I thought we might have seen you returning from Florida with us on the plane!  There was a young gentleman in a White Sox hat who had had a few rum runners (or something) too many yesterday (Tuesday).  He was traveling with a young woman in a Kzoo football sweatshirt, and another guy.  Guessing this wasn't you, then!   ;)  All I know about him is that flying makes him antsy, and he'd rather be driving his car very fast (and very inibriated).  Ah well... ;D

Happy New Year, everyone!  And if you drive, drive safely!

brief article about Derek Van Solkema, his play this year has eased the pain of Immink's graduation, although those of us in orange and blue knew he'd be fine.  8)

Albion gets back in action tommorrow night with a trip to CCIW favorite North Central then Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan.  Britons are coming off a 30 point shelacking by Elmhurst in Florida.  I fear for the Britons.

We might have to check with TitanQ on this but I think Albion is the first MIAA program to play at IWU's Shirk Center, possibly first ever at IWU ever.

MIAA takes two more on the chin tonight.........

North Central 69 Albion 58, possibly a better effort from the Brits.

UW Oshkosh 80 Tri-State 50....whoa!

So the MIAA now has a less than stellar 22-42 overall record going into the final weekend of the non-conference portion of the MIAA season.  Easily the worst in the past decade.

Excluding Hope, Calvin and Tri-State who are not exactly lighting up the win/loss records the other 5 are 6-34 for 18%

MIAA play assures a .500 record for the conference the rest of the way so things can only get better.............although its becoming more likely that a game or 2 might end up with both teams losing. ;)

On tap.........

Alma @ Franklin...........their playing the host in the first round of a holiday tournament, nuff said

Calvin vs UW LaCrosse.........to me its a toss up, UWL didn't overwhelm me last spring, this would be a good place to start with quality win.

Hope vs  Trinity Christian..........I don't believe Hope has ever lost to TC, certainly not in my 18 years of following the Dutchmen.  Should be a win

Kazoo @ Otterbein........another first round holiday tournament opponent, Kzoo just isn't competitive without McCain.  Another tough loss coming.

Olivet v Westminster..........have to make the Comets a slight dog vs the Titans.

Anything better than 1-4 would be a good Friday for the MIAA and would sadly raise the conference win percentage.

Adrian gets a shot to get off the shnide on Saturday when they play perenial NCAC bottom dwellers Oberlin who has 2 wins.  So maybe its  a toss up

Or possibly not. North Central's star forward Anthony Simmons (a second-team preseason All-American this year, and an All-CCIW first-teamer last year) did not suit up for the game. I doubt that the Cardinals would've matched last Friday's 30-point walkover by Elmhurst against the Brits even with a healthy Simmons, but the final margin would've been considerably higher than 11 points.

You called it, sac.  I should have seen this one coming.  North Central is now a very solid 7-3, while Albion falls to 2-7.
