Veldhouse's was good but Winkle's was better.

1. Todd Hennink---now THAT was a bomb.
2. Aaron Winkle
3. Bryan Foltice
4. Caleb Veldhouse

Hope's top buzzer beater's to beat  Calvin looks like this.......

<crickets>

Isn't that because when we beat them, we really beat them, rather than relying on some last second luck shot  (oh come on, it's a little bit funny)  :D :D :D

Sorry, but the best all time "Buzzer-Beater" was on Feb. 24, 1965 when freshman guard Don Kronemeyer won the game with a shot about one minute AFTER the buzzer went off at the end of the second overtime!  I was at the Civic Center game as a Hope freshman.

I briefly recounted it in an earlier post, but in case you missed it:  Kroney gets a defensive rebound a split second before the buzzer goes off in a tie game; everyone thinks we are headed to overtime # 3 in a game that would ultimately decide the MIAA Championship!  But a Calvin player fouls Kroney a split second before the buzzer went off, and Don is awarded a one and one free throw opportunity.  There is no time remaining on the clock.  The freshman walks the length of the court alone, and goes to the free throw line.  No one is under the basket, making it look like a technical free throw.  He calmly (?) makes the free throw, and the Civic Center crowd goes wild, carrying him off the court and celebrating a 103-102 double overtime lead.  It took the refs about five minutes to clear the court and give Kroney his second free throw, making the final score 104-102.  Bedlam again follows, and Kroney is again carried off the court!

Before that, with about 15 seconds left in the game, Calvin's Kim Campbell made the first for a one and one, giving Calvin a 103-100 lead and a two possesion lead; this appeared to be a safe lead, since this was before the three point shot.  However, his toe was on the line, so the refs waived off the free throw and took the point off the scoreboard!  Hope makes the next shot and proceeds to tie the score at 102-102.  Campbell then shoots with about five seconds left and misses.  Kroney gets the rebound and is fouled by Campbell at the buzzer despite being the length of the court away from the Hope basket.  Thus Campbell made two mental errors and missed a shot in the last 15 or so seconds.

OK, ok, I know they were only free throws, but it did happen approximtely one and five minutes AFTER the buzzer sounded.  AND it ultimately did give Hope another MIAA Championship by the length of a Calvin College toe!

If you don't think this is a buzzer beater, maybe we should create a new category:

  THE BEST ALL-TIME BUZZER EATER!

What an awesome Story. How fun that would have been to be at. This week a similar thing happened at a high school game. However, the refs really screwed things up. The fans rushed the floor after the first shot was made, thinking the game was over. However, the student had to take the second shot. The refs, idiots if you will, assessed a tech to the team for their fans being on the floor. Therefore, the other team had a chance to tie the game.

Is Don related to the Kronemeyer sisters (Lois and....oh shoot, I forget the other one)?  That would explain why they are still faithful fans to this day; I always wondered what kept them coming back to games season after season (I guess I should just ask them!). :)

I think Old Knight dated one of the Kronemeyer sisters back in the day.  ;)

One of the participants in that 65' game for Hope was Roy Anker who has been a professor of English at Calvin for a number of years (I think he is still at Calvin). It's just another of those interesting connections surrounding the continuing saga of The Rivalry.

Yes, it was a lot of fun to be at, my first Hope-Calvin game at the Civic Center.  But had the reverse happened to a Hope player, I would have been very frustrated and muttering something like, "What was he thinking?"  What is very unique is that my very first Hope-Calvin basketball game was 41 years ago, and it is still the most exciting and unique.

I think all the spectators thought that the game was over when they rushed the court the first time, since there was no time left on the clock, and Hope had the lead.  I was actually surprised when the refs insisted that Kronemeyer shoot the second shot.  It's kind of like a game winning touchdown in overtime, where you don't kick the extra point.  Wonder what they would do today?

Just curious, what happened at your high school game after the first shot was made?

Kronemeyer, Shronemyer!  Just remember, any place other than the Civic and that buzzer beater would have been two feet short.

I have all the sordid detail, but I'm constrained from sharing on the advice of my attorney. :P

I heard the story that the un-used t-shirts for the losers of the big championship games do in fact get donated to third world countries. Apparently the remark from someone returning from a trip to Africa was "everywhere you go are kids displaying 'Super Bowl Champion - Buffalo Bills.'"

Having been a UM fan at a college in Ohio, I can always stand to see OSU taken to the woodshed. However, now the SEC is again the end-all of conferences as far as the hype-machine figures, even though they were actually 1-2 against the Big Eleven this bowl season. I really couldn't root hard for much of anything last night though. Had UM won the Rose Bowl, almost any outcome from the championship could have looked pretty good, but once we dropped that stinker against USC, there wasn't much left to care about.

Anyway, on to the next college sports season, here's to hoping we can hear complaints that Dan Holt was being used to run up the score come Saturday night.
"You can say 'no,' and I can say 'yes,' and my word has THREE letters."
