Saturday of course marks the 163rd renewel of our fabled Hope/Calvin rivalry.
The stats
Series tied at 81-81
Hope leads by 44 points.........10,884 to 10840

Can that be right? The series is tied yet Hope leads by 44 points? Sounds to me like the Dutch have been shamelessly pouring it on. ;)

shamelessly pouring it on to the tune of .54 more points per win than Calvin has....SHAME ON THEM!!!  ;D ;D ;D :P

Forgot to add you can access the new rivalry web site by going to

hopecalvin.com

or if your willing to risk damage to your computer ;) :D

calvinhope.com

Lots of info on where to watch the game etc.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but when you go to hopecalvin.com, it still says hope vs calvin in the message bar at the very top of the screen... funny stuff... almost as funny as the fact that they felt the need to make two identical webpages :D :D :D

I heard from the Calvin person I RSVPed to that there are usually 80+ people at the place I am going on Saturday... I wonder how many people watch this game on TV around the country if you add up the actual arena and all the satellite locations. It must be an insane number!

April, This is the second year for us in Portland, and it looks like we'll have somewhere in the 30+ range. We are all ready pushing the amount of space we have at the current location. I know Seattle has 20-30 every year as well.

Should be fun... Well, more fun for one set of fans than the other, but I'll never place a confident bet on this game.

You live in Portland??? Soo jealous!!! It's so beautiful up there... it is the land of happy pine trees (I call them this because their branches all curve up, it looks like they're raising their arms to the sky in celebration and other cheesy things.)

Are there really no SoCal posters or lurkers here?  ???

April the hopecalvin.com website says they had 2,800 alumni at the "gatherings".  This year they have 60 sites registerd, the most ever.  Some pretty impressive restaurants if you don't mind me saying.

So 4,500 at Calvin, close to 3,000 at "official" locations and another several thousand watching on the tube around West Michigan and who knows how many picking up the game on CSTV.

I was about to break out my paint set.  You probably have to be old and have watched PBS as a kid.

PBS was ALL I was allowed to watch for ages... Seseme Street... Reading Rainbow... .

Unfortunately I also have no idea what you are talking about. Perhaps because you were nearing adolescence when I was born. :)

I asked this a few days ago but nobody responded, and that was if anyone knew the time the fieldhouse opens the doors to the general public/students for The Game?

Bob Ross was a good man and a one of a kind artist.  You don't have to be that old to remember him.  I just saw him on a PBS rerun like a month ago.

...and maybe there is a little river hiding back there....yeah there it is... one happy winding little river...

Always one of the interesting things about Hope/Calvin games is the HS ties the combatants have.

Here's an article about Vander Heide, Snoeyink, Kotsier and Veltema all teamates at Calvin Christian High School.

http://www.hollandsentinel.com/stories/011207/localsports_20070112036.shtml

I can't remember to many times when 4 guys from  one HS team played in this game.  According to my supersecret sources in 1993 there were SIX kids from Grand Rapids Christian playing in those games.  5 for Calvin, 1 for Hope.  Holland Christian was also well represented one year with 5 players.

The Calvin Christian HS/  Hope v Calvin alumni going back to 93
Duane Bosma---Hope 93-96
Rob Velthouse---Calvin 95-98
Don Overbeek---Hope 00-03
Todd Kotsier---Calvin 05-current
Kyle Snoeyink--Calvin 05-current
Marcus VanderHeide---Hope 06-current
Matt Veltema----Calvin 07--

Very interesting side note (to me at least).......the article mentions CC lost to Drew Neitzel's Wyoming Park team in the Regional Finals but it doesn't mention that Calvin Christian beat my High School in the Semi-Finals.  The mighty Greyhounds had no shot that day.  I feel a little dissed.  :-\

It was quite a contrast in student bodies and lets just say the blonde factor was tilted quite a bit to the CC side, .........along with average family income.     But I'm confident we would have won any contest involving camouflage or hunter orange.  ;D :D ;)

And of course Calvin alum Ryan Stevens has coached Calvin Christian for about 9 years now, I think.  How many other veterans of The Rivalry are coaching elsewhere?

GoKnight, the JV plays Hope at 11:30, so I'm assuming the doors open before that!  I guess the Box Office would know for sure.

I'm doing this without a net and off the top of my head.  To be honest I don't follow HS basketball real closely anymore.

Glenn VanWieren, Matt Neil, Tom Davelaar----obvious
Eric Elliot------Hope JV/ Hope
Micky Phelps---Holland Christian/Calvin
Colly Carlson---McBain/Hamilton/Hope Women's Asst/ Hope
Doug Schlaaf----Mattawan/ Hope
Ryan Klingler----Fennvillle/Hope
Ryan Schooveld------Holland Christan girls teams/ Hope JV/ Hope and Calvin
Doug Ameraal-----Holland West Ottawa/ Hope JV?/ Student Asst.
Jason Vander Woude-----Grand Haven JV?/Hope
Greg Mitchell----Laingesburg / Hope
Chip Henry----GR Baptist?/Hope
Kevin Brintnell -----Bluffton College JV/ Cadillac/ Hope........not sure where now
Duane Bosma----Calvin Christian 8th or 9th grade/ Hope

Some of these no longer coach or are coaching somewhere else and I think I've just scratched the surface here and I'm missing some rather obvious ones. :-[

Ken Hiskes at GR South Christian comes to mind. I believe Kalamazoo Christian's coach, Jerry Mastenbrook also played. I'm sure there others who are out of state who I don't know. He's before my time so I don't know if Dick Katte at Denver Christian played (I'm OldKnight--but not that old).
