Welcome Hopeconvert, stick around another opinion is always welcome.

convert from what? :D

Well ... um ... I'm a Calvin grad. And I'll be at the game today with some friends of mine who'll be cheering for Calvin. My wife and I will be there in our Hope garb cheering on the Dutchmen. It's all very twisted.   ???

Congratulations to HopeConvert on your graduation from lurker status. Your first post was worthy enough to gain +k from OK even if you "converted" to heretical thinking. ;)

Oldknight-----I think your correct that Hope pressed pretty well against Calvin but they didn't do it the whole game and were quick to back off (maybe Calvin just knows what parts of the floor to avoid)  Perhaps my memory is failing me a little as well.  The Dutchmen seemed to have unleashed unholy heck on their first 3 MIAA opponents.

As my aging memory goes, I remember Hope basically alternating between 3 types of defenses the first time around--a full court zone trap, a half court trap, and a traditional zone (either a 3-2 or a 2-1-2). They may have used some man-to-man as well. I thought Hope alternated their defenses nicely to keep Calvin off balance the entire game and Glenn had his boys well prepared. It was one of his best coaching efforts IMHO.

I have to confess, I was worried that some Calvin people were going to take what little karma I had, in as much as I seem to have violated the "P" in TULIP. (Those RCA types are a little less picky about that.) Thanks!

HopeConvert: We'll need your name so that we can begin the proper steps towards alumni discipline. It begins with a visit from two alumni who will explain to you the error of your way and ask that you repent and return to the fold. If that doesn't work we move to silent censure which is denial of any Hudsonville Ice Cream while under that form of alumni discipline. If that doesn't lead to repentence we follow with a public announcement of your name at half time of the Homecoming game requesting prayers for the wayward brother. The final step is to publicly pronounce you to be a heretic and someone worthy of being treated as an unbeliever (i.e., a Hopester). In that case you will be denied tickets to any future Calvin events (However, we do reserve the right to continue soliciting you for donations to the college). ;)

Get me some Hudsonville Ice Cream at the half today. That will go a ways towards assuaging my bruised feelings. ;)

I'm impressed - you've brought excommunication proceedings against one who has already left the fold. My guess is this has something to do with the doctrine of election, but I'm not sure. Perhaps this is yet another indication of my apostacy, but I can actually live without Hudsonville Ice Cream. Deny me Russ' carrot cake, however, and that is another story. I have twin sauce in my veins.

That said, I can't give karma, but I can give kudos all around. I've learned a lot reading this board over the past while, and lurked mainly because I didn't think I had much to add.

As far as the game goes, I have to confess I am quite nervous about it. Throw the records out when these two teams meet (who can forget what happened in the final game at the Civic Center?) It's a must-win game for Calvin, and they will be ready to play. IMO, Reimink is fast becoming the heart and soul of Hope's team, and if he gets into early foul trouble it will hurt Hope in all sorts of ways, not least because he is their best interior defender. Veldhouse was clearly the freshman of the year last year, but over four years Reimink may well prove to be the most important member of last year's class - especially if he keeps showing the sort of range he did Wednesday night. He also has a real nice feel for Hope's press, and always seems to be in the right spot. He completely disrupted Albion in the backcourt.

NOBODY expects the Calvin inquisition.  Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as fear, surprise, ruthless effiency, nice red uniforms, and KVS...

Paraphrased, of course, from Monty Python.

I haven't been on here much this season, you know job responsibilities etc.  But what has happened to Adrian college in the MIAA thus far.  I noticed their pre conference record was terrible, but they have three victories in the league so far.  Who did they play pre-conference D1 schools?  Why the sudden improvement?  Or are they just a flash in the pan?  Was the win over Calvin a fluke?

Go Hope!

Well, they did play a very difficult nonconference schedule, first and foremost, including games against 2 DII schools in Florida.  They continually improved despite a bad record, and all along, they had a scrappy, gutsy team.  However, at semester, they got a transfer from Saginaw Valley (and yes, previously from EMU), who put the team over the edge.  Now, they're playing with more confidence, and they have the offensive firepower to back up that scrappy attitude.

Hopefully they'll continue to play as they've been playing.  If so, they're going to be a tough team to beat for the rest of the season.

Green Hornet

Yep! I can't wait for Hope to play the East side school. If Hope beats Calvin today then Adrian is waiting sneak up on them.

flash96

Thanks for the insight on Adrian.  How about a scouting report for Wednesday?

Calvin played a good game today.  Hope should be glad to escape with a W today.  Seemed like a hard fought game, like it should be.  I believe this is the first time in several years that Hope went up in the series.

Dark Knight

Well, overall the Calvin men pulled it out today. Varsity lost by 3 (make that by 6 inches), but the JVs won by 5. Engelsma looks like a really good rebounder and post player with court sense and instincts.

In the varsity game, Mantel had a break-out game, and I think the team as a whole did as well in terms of defensive intensity. If they can keep it up, they'll be taking a large step forward over all.

Just have to keep progressing until the MIAA tournament...
