Calvin wins 78-71 in a rather uninspired win.  Albion manages just 2 FT in about the last five minutes.

Hope women are clawing their way back from a 41-26 half time score... Currently 55-50 Albion w/ 9:28

Hope learning they can't spot up teams this year... 82-75 Albion final.

Any word on AC v 3State?  I believe 3 had a slim lead at half.

Hope rolls, men win big.  But not really surprising either.  Looks like the real test for the Dutchmen comes against Tri-State.  It would be nice to stay unbeated at home again this season.

Looks like the women were trying to come back against Albion.

Glad that I didn't go see the Hope women play today!  Always hate to see a loss.  Saw some good high school basketball last night.  A kid poured in 39 points in a close game.  The kid averages 28 a game as a junior.  He'll be threat next season.  He won't play for Hope or Calvin, doesn't have the grades.

Best... dunk... ever...

A few observations from today's Hope/Alma tilt:

1. Turns out this Cramer fella is pretty good. He played an outstanding game, and I suspect I won't be the only poster to note the way he electrified the gym with that two-handed-off-the-backboard slam. Smart pass by DVS to lay it off the glass, and another great dunk. But really, that was just icing on a great all-around game Cramer played. DVS played well also. I don't know much outside the region, but I am willing to wager there aren't too many teams out there that have a better guard combo.

2. The second unit seemed out of sorts today. Give Alma credit - even after a huge deficit they played hard, scrappy ball to the end. I am willing to say it's official: Partridge is struggling on the offensive end of the floor. This is four games in a row that I have seen where he has been unable to get into the flow of the offense. He lost the handle on his shot a few times today, and got blocked a few also. He was clearly frustrated.

3. I hope 25's injury isn't as serious as it seemed. Isaac Smith was clearly the best player on the floor for Alma and had a solid game.

4. Solid game by Hope: the MIAA is clearly down, but if that's the case you need to take care of those teams handily, and Hope has been doing that. A good sign, although it portends little for the future.

The live scoreboard showed OC as the 63-60 winner on a layup three point play by Jeff Cooper.  Was it wrong?

Well, I'm thankful for the Calvin win.  I was listening from home, but it sure didn't "look" like last Saturday's team!

By the way, I've changed my screen name to avoid confusion between "bballmom" (my old screen name) and "basketballmom."  Since I have a Calvin player and a Chelsea High player, it's a bit more specific.  Chelsea is 9-0 and ranked #6 in the state!  They're tallest player is only 6'3" this year, but they are very fast!  GVW was at a recent game.  It was good to see him again.

You know, it can still be arranged that you get to see GVW twice a week between November and March for the next three years  ;D

I'm planning on it.  Maybe even longer with two more players at home!

By the way, this should be SO obvious, but how do you do that "quote" thing, so that it's clear who you are responding to?!?  I can't even get the little yellow faces to come up!  I'm sure it's in some "posting for dummies" book somewhere.

When you click on "reply" and scroll down the prior posts you'll see "insert quote" in the upper right-hand corner. Just click on that.

Quite frankly, I'm not entirely happy with Calvin's uninspiring win today at the Fieldhouse. They continue to leave teams wide open at the arc and Albion took full advantage. I guess I should cut them some slack because, after all, the Brits showed up with a guy no one has ever heard of, #3 (I think his name is Zak Silas), who burned the Knights repeatedly after receiving the skip pass. Who would have guessed that this unknown player could do so much damage? [Pat: you need a "dripping with sarcasm" icon for me to use at this point].

Calvin showed up to play a game. Albion showed up to win a  game and the difference was apparent for most of the 40 minutes of play. I thought Calvin's offense was far too content to take shots from the arc early in the shot clock and they spent far too little time trying to enter the ball into the post. I was actually bored with the play until about the 8 minute mark of the second half when Joe Dumars' running mate did something that made the game far more interesting.

With the score 63-60 in favor of the Brits, Dustin came flying down court on a change of possession, penetrated to about 6 feet and took a shot that went in. There was some contact with the defender and the ref had three choices: 1) a block, 2) a charge, or 3) a no call. The ref went with door #3, the players went down and as they began to untangle an unhappy Isaiah gave a two hand chest pass (minus the ball)  to Dustin's torso directly in front of the ref and the local end zone fans. The resultant T and free throws made gave Calvin a 1 point lead and they did play with a bit more energy after that (For what it's worth I thought the ref's no call was the right decision).

Moments later KVS made the critical decision to introduce the calming influence of the unflappable Tyler Zoerhof to the game  ;) and that choice paid immediate dividends when he drew a charging foul on Silas-his fifth--sending Albion's best player to the pine. Albion's offense looked lost the rest of the game and the Knights escaped with a 7 point win.
