Okay.  Let's see if this works.  I'm even going to try to put in a yellow face. ;)

At least I got the yellow face right.  I'm going out to look for the posting book!

Kazoo 63, Olivet 60
Calvin 78, Albion 71

The live scoreboard showed OC as the 63-60 winner on a layup three point play by Jeff Cooper.  Was it wrong?

I saw that, MIAA.org has changed it.  They put it in wrong originally.

Best... dunk... ever...

(OK, ever for D3, but still)

You are absolutely correct with that statement!!! That dunk was unbelievable! It was one that you rarely see in division one ball! I have to say I was very pleased with DVS and his unselfish play because he could have had an easy 2 points but instead he sets Cramer up for one of the best dunks in Hopes history or should I say D3 basketball history........ That may be a bold statement but I think i am going to stand behind it. That play also speaks a lot about Hopes team chemistry right now. They are clicking so well right now and yes I understand it helps that they are playing against a very week MIAA but they are playing at a very high level and blowing teams out left and right (with the exception of Calvin).

It will be very interesting to see if Tri-State shows up to give Hope a challenge on Wed.

Just a couple of thoughts:

- It's very easy to say great things about your team and have them look good when they can have their way with most teams (in the MIAA).  But it's a credit to the team that they don't look at it that way, and seem to be able to bring their A-game regardless of the competition (at least since Carthage).

- I would agree that Partridge seems to be struggling a bit, although I really appreciated the defense he and Marcus played against Isaac Smith.  Isaac had 11 at the half and only added 2 more in the second.

- That Cramer dunk (and the assist by DVS) would be enough for instant introduction into the Super Sweetness Hall of Fame for both.  I even heard that the folks on "media row" were ranking it very high.  I have only seen a dunk of that quality in a NBA game.

- Very interesting JV game.  Each team had a mid season transfer playing.  Jordasky for Hope, and Nathan Whitford started for Alma.  Prior to the break, Nathan was on the Hope JV team.  Add to that, the fact that the Alma JV squad has a female coach (anybody have any background on her?), and it was quite intersting.  A pretty decent  game as well.

Yup, the VS/Cramer dunk was the best I've ever seen in a live BB game . . . something I can believe they might try in practice, but in real game time on the spur of the moment?  Well, maybe when you're 30+ points ahead.

But that wasn't all, Derek and Steve combined for 15 of 16 shooting, 6 steals, 4 assists and 2 turnovers.  I can't recall ever seeing such shootig from a pair of Hope guards (and Marcus was also 2 for 2, so 17 of 18 from the perimeter starters).  We can't expect that again.  But wow, what play, what chemistry, and what fun.

Olivet won 63-60--way to close, Olivet only shot 24% in the first half but did regroup in 2nd half for the win!

Quite frankly, I'm not entirely happy with Calvin's uninspiring win today at the Fieldhouse. They continue to leave teams wide open at the arc and Albion took full advantage. I guess I should cut them some slack because, after all, the Brits showed up with a guy no one has ever heard of, #3 (I think his name is Zak Silas), who burned the Knights repeatedly after receiving the skip pass. Who would have guessed that this unknown player could do so much damage? [Pat: you need a "dripping with sarcasm" icon for me to use at this point].

Calvin showed up to play a game. Albion showed up to win a  game and the difference was apparent for most of the 40 minutes of play. I thought Calvin's offense was far too content to take shots from the arc early in the shot clock and they spent far too little time trying to enter the ball into the post. I was actually bored with the play until about the 8 minute mark of the second half when Joe Dumars' running mate did something that made the game far more interesting.

With the score 63-60 in favor of the Brits, Dustin came flying down court on a change of possession, penetrated to about 6 feet and took a shot that went in. There was some contact with the defender and the ref had three choices: 1) a block, 2) a charge, or 3) a no call. The ref went with door #3, the players went down and as they began to untangle an unhappy Isaiah gave a two hand chest pass (minus the ball)  to Dustin's torso directly in front of the ref and the local end zone fans. The resultant T and free throws made gave Calvin a 1 point lead and they did play with a bit more energy after that (For what it's worth I thought the ref's no call was the right decision).

Moments later KVS made the critical decision to introduce the calming influence of the unflappable Tyler Zoerhof to the game  ;) and that choice paid immediate dividends when he drew a charging foul on Silas-his fifth--sending Albion's best player to the pine. Albion's offense looked lost the rest of the game and the Knights escaped with a 7 point win.

I thought Snoeyink was  good today.  He knows his limitations and plays within himself.  He does a lot of little things that open things up for others on the floor.  He also saw the floor well and made some excellent passes.

Silas was very good today, but he committed some silly fouls.

Dean Raven's block on the Mantel dunk attempt was a very good play by him.

Snoeyink did play well in limited minutes. He had a beautiful entry pass to Griffin about midway of the second half that resulted in a 3 point play for the Knights. If I heard Doug Wentworth's postgame interview with KVS correctly, Kyle's foot remains problematic but has improved since receiving a cortisone shot a couple of weeks ago thereby improving his lift and mobility.

Hope 86 Alma 53

uh yeah.......Alma just had an "off-night" ;)

I don't care how down a league or a team is it takes a tremendous amount of effort, determination and downright good defense to get a 26-2 lead...........lets pause and read that again.........26-2. 8) :o

Not to mention some pretty phenomenal offense, VanSolkema got them going with 3 treys that barely touched the net and a beauty of a 3 point play, he had 12 points in about 4 minutes.  Alma seemed to compete very well with Hope's second unit, in fact I thought they played harder when Hope subbed out.  But they simply could not handle Reimink, Richardson, VanderHeide, VanSolkema and Cramer.  Alma had loads of trouble with the pressure and double teams...........how many shots did they even get off in the first 5 minutes  3? 4?

Once a comfortable lead was established, Hope sort of went into a shooting funk yet still led comfortably by 23 at the half.

The second half was more of the same domination by Hope's starters when they left after Cramers superb dunk, the lead was 34 and yet another short day for the starters.  The 2nd unit played its best ball of the afternoon over the next few minutes and expand the lead to 41, Alma scored the last 7 points of the game.

Hope really did an excellent job on Isaac Smith, he had to work pretty hard and wasn't given many openings, Hope esp. took away the baseline drive.  Otherwise he didn't have much help but again Hope was taller just about everywhere.

Cramer 23, VanSolkema 15 as noted both were superb today, Klein 10 and the beneficiary of several nice assists

Alma committed 27 turnovers, 17 credited as Hope steals.  Hope was pretty much all over the Scots.

As always a few thougths

-----I don't have much trouble saying this was Steve Cramers best game as a Dutchmen, you might find a higher scoring night, but he was 10-11 as smooth as ever, highlighted of course by what shall be forever known as "the dunk".   He played just 16 minutes.......if needed he could have had 35 easy today.

Whats ironic is that I sat next to Grandma Cramer, who went as bonkers as everyone on the dunk.  During the boring parts of the game we had a nice running conversation about how much fun this team is to watch and about Steve's HS exploits.........apparently this was not his best dunk :o

.........and she's far to young to be a Grandma ;) ;D

------I might say the same for Van Solkema, although his 2 Calvin perfromances were steller, he set the tone today right out of the gate.  After the start he sort of settled into a quiet pt gaurd roll.

-----You could see that dunk coming for about 30 seconds while DVS and Cramer constantly hounded the Alma pt gaurd, when VS came out with the ball I was bit disappointed because I thought for sure he would take it himself.........but from my endzone seats you could just catch him glancing back.........at that point I knew it was gameover...... WOW!

------If it wasn't for that one, everyone would be talking about Scott Glaser's serious throwdown late in the game.  Give the guy some love.  Equally as impressive.

------3,000 for Alma.......I'd say at least that many agree this is a fun team to watch when they play well.  I'm looking forward to going back on Wednesday for a headliner game with Tri-State.

KnightSlappy

Uninspired defense by the Knights today.  The Albion baseline drive brought a double team every time which lead to way too many open looks.  I guess this Silas kid can make a few of the open ones.  Silly fouls by the Brits helped Calvin when they were struggling. (when Geerlings is a ref I guess most of the fouls are silly)
