Definition of off-topic:  The inane, sometimes humorous drivel that sustains us between games, linking friends (and psuedo-enemies) electronically with or without specific dunks to discuss.   ;)
However I think it's very important to clarify at this juncture that genuine Heinz Ketchup and Mustard definitely ARE on topic.  ;D

And I thought women were touchy!   :)  I don't care much about my MIAA karma these days.  My son is home for the day and just gave me the biggest karma rating anyone could ever give me, so he made my day! I do like the humorous posts because they break up some of the intensity on this board.  Overall, it's kind of like a big dysfunctional family reunion...lots of love, lots of laughs, lots of pent-up anger!  I've read that the way you can tell "where you treasure is" (i.e. what's wrapped around your heart) is by what you get really angry about.  So, I'm a recovering "athlete's mother" trying to enjoy the games and the team and not let my world get rocked by it all.  It's hard work!

I couldn't find my keys this morning. Spent 45 minutes looking for them. I was pretty angry about that.

Other than that - this is basketball. I can't see getting angry about it, although I do get tremendous pleasure from following Hope. A relative treasure, not an absolute one. I went with my son to the Adrian game last week and, as enjoyable as the game was, it was the five hours that I spent with him in the car that made it such a special night for me.

To clear up a point from yesterday -- in our discussion about what it might take boost Calvin's play this season, I was somehow misinterpreted.  I didn't mean to imply in any way that Calvin was sandbagging; not at all.  Not sure how that was misread, but my apologies if it seemed I was suggesting such a thing. :-[

I didn't interpret your comments to imply that Calvin was sandbagging; rather I thought it was an expression of wonderment that the Knights don't seem to be moving on an upward curve as you (and others) expected to see from them over the last several games. Based on KVS's comments it appears he is at a loss to explain it too. Which raises the question, WWCMD? ;)

I have several thoughts on some possible answers to that question.  I think it better however, that I refrain from sharing them on the grounds that I might mysteriously die in my sleep tonight.   :P

Can someonne post the picture of this mascot.  I remember seeing this a while back.  Is this the one that is going to look like a rowdy Hope frat boy with orange hair?

In regards to the mascot, I also heard that he:

*  is a transfer

*  can dunk like no-one has ever seen

*  in his spare time wears khaki pants and a blue blazer

*  Loves John Stott

*  and puts both ketchup and mustard on his "Big Pig"

Have a GREAT weekend everyone!  :)

Any word on whether the new mascot needs a mini trampoline to dunk like Stephen Cramer?

Well FDF, I guess that's at least a partial answer to my question, WWCMD? ;)

Yeah, but does the mascot have a clear memory of the contents of Augustine's City of God? :D

With all the talk over the past few days, especially about Hope I am surprised nobody has pointed out these stats.

League  Overall
                 W L Avg. Opp.                W L Avg. Opp.
Hope         7 0 87.6 56.7               15 2 80.9 63.2
Adrian        5 2 69.4 73.0               6 10 66.7 70.9
Calvin        5 2 74.6 65.9               10 7 74.0 70.6
Tri-State    5 2 71.6 74.7               11 6 68.6 69.9
Albion        3 4 71.7 71.1                5 12 68.1 72.5
Olivet         2 5 64.9 74.0               4 13 65.5 72.8
Alma          1 6 67.3 79.4                2 15 64.2 77.8
Kalamazoo 0 7 60.9 73.0               2 14 65.4 78.1

Sorry for the bad lines, but it was a lil messed up when I copied at pasted from the MIAA site. But just looking at the board halfway through the conference season a few things stood out. First the overall records just look so poor, I know non conference games have been over for a while, but just looking at the overall records the league looks weak. I can't remember there being that many bad bad teams in the MIAA.
The thing that really jumps out at me is the scoring. I realize Hope has been winning a lot of games handily but I can't remember a team that was scoring 13 more points a game than the next closest team, while giving up 9 points less a game than the next best defensive team. Keep it up Dutchmen, this stat should only get better after the Kalamazoo game on Saturday. Can't wait for all that bball at Devos, should be a good day, especially after Michigan knocks off IU.
Go Blue, do Dutch! Can't wait to see the new mascot on Saturday, might be the highlight of my 4 years at Hope. I mean since Hope just has so little tradition I definetely agree that they need a mascot, who liked the anchor anyways, and nobody really knows what the Flying Dutchmen are so we must need some old graybearded man wearing a goofy sailor suit to represent our teams.

Ask OldKnight. The Flying Dutchman is one of Wagner's operas. The overture figures prominently at the beginning of the Looney Tunes classic "What's Opera, Doc?" which features a blue-and-orange clad Elmer Fudd singing "Kill the Kni-ights!"

It's a ghost ship.

Hey, does anyone know how Hope did last night?

With feathers, they were perched on the soul. They sang the song without the words, and never stopped at all.

I enjoyed the reference, HopeConvert!

You're a great addition to the board -- a Hope fan who appears to have had a solid education.   ;) :D ;D :)

If you take out the game against Calvin (the only competitive Hope conference game to date) Hope is winning by an average of 35.5 points (91.3 vs 55.8).  I point this out not to toot Hope's horn, but to again point out the weakness of the league.
