Don't forget that in the MIAA tournament, Adrian is 2-1 alltime vs. Hope.  I certainly will never forget that wonderful 2004 game at the Civic.  On any given night, any of the top several teams could knock off any of the others, especially in the MIAA tournament.

There is an interesting story on the MIAA website (www.miaa.org). MIAA comish Dave Neilson has awarded Hope the basketball championship along with the MIAA tourney title and the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. He also stated Wed. and Sat. games will be played because the officials were already assigned.

After reading this article I was finally able to make sense of the invitation I received last night from Coach VandeStreek to the Calvin Basketball end of the season banquet which is being held this Sunday afternoon.

I had a slow day at work so I decided to check out www.census.gov. I found some interesting information on the website. I found a page listing the top 20 occupations of people who enter the Federal Witness Protection Program. I wasn't real shocked to see "Alma College Men's Basketball Leading Scorer" at #9 on the list. Every year is seems like that guy doesn't end up on next seasons roster

Hide the kids - unless you want them frightened.

Does this mascot wear wooden shoes to complete the outfit? :)

If he does, it will make my day.

If he doesn't wear wooden shoes I'd be devastated. I mean it would be missing the biggest part of the whole outfit!

If you take a look at the picture below, it looks as if he is wearing wood-type shoes (sorta like your partially hydrogenated cheese type product!)  I have never seen fuzzy wooden shoes before!  As a Hope fan, it saddens me.  But, at the same time, I would expect nothing more either...

I really am impartial to having a mascot, but I feel if we are going to have one, at least have him do something. Get him out there with the cheerleaders doing a little jig or something. Also can we get him some orange and blue that matches, he has two noticabely different shades of blue and two different shades of orange on.
The Dutchmens chance at a national championship has recently been brought up on the boards. Although it is still way to early to start thinking about this I might as well give my input since the topic has been coming up. I feel that this years team is great, but its hard to tell how great since they have had little competition to base this on. Their depth and extremely good defense leads me to believe they have a shot, but how can we really tell? Hopefully they can stay healthy through the 2nd half of the season and continue working fabuloulsy together as a team. Keeping the guys focused on winning the league and getting some homecourt advantage for the MIAA and NCAA tourneys should be the first concerns, then they can worry about competing for the title.

Do you really need to bring that up?  Bad bad memories.  I also remember a game a few years prior when they couldn't miss and Hope went down in the first round at Knollcrest.

Ironically, on the day of the 2001 game, I was on a recruiting trip to Hope! :)

mjf:  Well said. :)
The mascot:  Fuzzy wooden shoes leads one to believe that this is a show mascot, and not a working mascot. :)  Is it correct to assume this is the admin's mascot, and not the dew crew's mascot? ???

zany mascot skits:  Years ago at a Calvin/Hope game at Calvin.  A mascot sort of resembling a Knight magically appeared, complete with sword.  Also making an appearance was a "Flying Dutchman" with leather flying helmet, goggles, a sort of jump/flight suit, and a long flying scarf.   Neither team's fan's or cheerleaders (yes, Calvin at one time had cheerleaders, I told you this was years ago) quite knew what to make of these characters as they proceed to take turns chasing each other around the fieldhouse.  This mock sparing or fighting went on until about half time when the Knight slew the Dutchman at the center jump circle.  Dragged the remains off court, to a standing 0, and to my knowledge neither was ever seen again. :D

According to the announcers introducing Dutch, he was created by the student congress

Why does a dutchman wear wooden shoes?

So the woodpeckers stay off his head.

Bet you can't find those "googles" anywhere on the internet though. ;) ::)

After seeing that Calvin "knight" I am no longer even remotely concerned about "Dutch" embarassing Hope. Wow, that is one ugly face thing he has going on.

As far as I know the decision to find a mascot was made by a past Student Congress President and vice-President who wanted to make sure they did something that would make people realize they were actually Pres. and VP and that the Student Congress does something that is very noticeable. (I would say most of Student Congress' work usually goes unnoticed). I don't think anyone in the Dew Crew felt the need for a mascot.
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.

This mascot of ours was created by student congress!!! They like to clam that the student body was all for it as well but it seems to me that everyone here on Hopes campus likes to think differently. A lot of Dew Crew members fought against it but had no luck! The Dew Crew was also told that they need to be nice to "Dutch" so I would say it was this is the administrations mascot! haha I just hope at ol Dutch will actually do something at the next home game in stead of just stand there. When you spend 7,500 dollars on a mascot you would hope its for more than just looks!

Dutch_Man

DCHopeNut, I think you have said it well! haha I would have to agree that the student pres. and vice-pres. probably just want a little attention. Now I am regretting that I actually voted for them last year!!! They did not tell the student body that is was something that they had up there sleeve!

Like I said before, leave the cheerleaders and mascots to Hope.  I hope when Calvin gets their new fieldhouse they don't get any bright ideas like this.
