A mascot sort of resembling a Knight magically appeared, complete with sword.  Also making an appearance was a "Flying Dutchman" with leather flying helmet, googles,

Bet you can't find those "googles" anywhere on the internet though. ;) ::)

The "Flying Dutchman," goggles and all, was alive and well during my tenure at Hope.  The job seemed to fall to the strangest individuals (no offense meant at all.)  I would guess that he devolved into the current 3-pt guy, if someone traced the history enough. :)

I believe the 3-point guy started somewhere in the mid to late 90's. As far as I know Brian, who would have been a Hope class of '00, was the first one to do the tie-dyed shirt and the posting of the 3-point signs. Or did someone precede him even earlier in the 90's? I don't think they ever did the 3's stuff before they had all the Dew stuff, so I would imagine you could trace it right along with the Pepsi Co sponsership.

Thanks OK: >:(   One does a 100 posts perfectly and no one says a thing, but spell one word wrong :(
CM:  Glad someone at Hope remembers that era, and the "Flying Dutchman".  It was so long ago I forgot most of the details but the skit was lol rof funny.  From the website posted earlier it mentions something about this in the mid 60's.  I do not recall ever seeing the Hope mascot of that era, but it does make sense that some Calvin students were having some fun spoofing the whole thing. :)  We sort of assumed it was Calvin students when the Flying Dutchman got killed. :D
FDF:  In those days we couldn't dance on campus, but cheerleaders were okay.  Go figure. :D

Oh, so that is supposed to be a Knight?  I was always confused as to why an "alternative lifestyle" gladiator looking thing with a neck-brace was so excited about Calvin basketball.

This mascot of ours was created by student congress!!! They like to clam that the student body was all for it as well but it seems to me that everyone here on Hopes campus likes to think differently. A lot of Dew Crew members fought against it but had no luck! The Dew Crew was also told that they need to be nice to "Dutch" so I would say it was this is the administrations mascot! haha I just hope at ol Dutch will actually do something at the next home game in stead of just stand there. When you spend 7,500 dollars on a mascot you would hope its for more than just looks!

$7500 doesn't get you much these days.

I guess there aren't many Simpsons fans here.   I think Matt Groening should think about copyright infringement. Capn' McAlister......

For the record, I only have memory of the Flying Dutchman from the late 70's, early 80's... ;)   (Just to keep the record, and my age, straight, ya know!) :)

I was thinking it was a tribute to Hemingway myself.

Actually, I was also wondering if there is a handle in Dutch's back allowing him to help the crowd crack some nutshells (new item for the wonderful concession stands?).

bulldogalum- what do you think about the game tomorrow evening at the Rolla Dome?

There's no doubt that the Hornets can win this game.  I really want to see guys like Tyler Worst, Phil Weaver, Thomas Greer and the rest of the seniors get on a bit of a roll in the 2nd half.  Hope is out of the way. They can beat every other team.  Adrian, Alma, Olivet and Calvin are all at the AAC, while Albion is certainly beatable on the road.  7 games left- get after it men.

As Sac points out Hope's guards are doing a heck of a job defensively.  At this point I think they will  handle most opposing guards.  Calvin (and other teams) have worked to get the ball inside with mixed results.  Like it or not, Hope has to be the odds on favorite for the MIAA championship, and tournament.  It is possible some other MIAA team might upset them, but doubt we will see that.  Yes, a team with a good inside game is going to give Hope some problems.  Especially if they have guards capable of dealing with the pressure they will be facing, and can actually get the ball inside.  An issue Calvin is repeatedly learning is "easier said than done".  All GVW needs to say to keep his teams feet on the ground are words like Carthage, and Wheaton.
I did not see the Carthage and Wheaton games but my inside the team source tells me Hope did not play together or share the ball much.
The Calvin game, Calvin ran alot of high ball screens and slipped the pick and roll, catching Hope napping on the weak side.  There were very few "inside game " post moves to be seen.  Because of the way the postseason games are usually officiated, I would expect that a good big man will get the schnockers  (Dutch swear word)  beat out of him in the post by Reimink and Richardson (very physical kids) and they would double.

A side note:  What is the NCAA record for team 3point percentage?  I have never seen a whole team shoot like Hope's....Check out their team and indie stats...only Wolfe (surprisingly since that was his game) and VanderHeide are under 40 % from 3 pt range.  Most of them shoot at least 45% from 2 point range....   Hard to guard team.  Maybe do what KZOO did and beat the diddley (Calvin swear word)  out of everyone and not worry about fouls, jsut keep 'em below 100.

For whatever reason, we always struggle on the road at K.  There is no doubt that the Hornets can win this game--from what I saw last time, they persevere, even when they're down by a considerable margin.  It's always tougher to put a team like that away on the road than at home.

Having said that, I don't think Kzoo has anyone that can stop Desmond Young, and if they double him, he's resourceful enough to make the Hornets pay for any sort of defensive mistake.  That fact alone will make things difficult for Kzoo, especially if Young gets hot from the floor.

For Kzoo to win, they'll have to be more effective on the offensive end than they were last time, which means Coach Passage will have to come up with some answers for the Bulldog defense that caused them all sorts of trouble a few weeks ago.  They'll have to stay out of foul trouble, and keep Adrian off the free throw line (last time, the Bulldogs were 23 of 28 from the line), and they'll have to keep Adrian from getting 5 or 6 guys in double digits, like the Bulldogs were doing with fair regularity during their hot stretch at the start of the season.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the trip to the Rolla Dome for the game tomorrow night, but I'm hoping for the best, and I'll be listening online.  Best of luck to your Hornets!
