Reimink and Richardson combined 8 fouls, 0 points, and 2 rebounds against a very mediocre Calvin frontcourt...

...and very mediocre officiating.  Three ticky-tacky fouls in, what 1.3 minutes isn't exactly par for the course.  Neither has had quite that much foul trouble (or scoring trouble) in any other game, including in Wisconsin, if I'm not mistaken.  Let's assume until proven otherwise that Hope was having an off night and that Calvin had some home court adreneline working to their advantage.  Should history repeat itself on Feb. 7, then we'll talk.   8)

Thanks OK: >:(   One does a 100 posts perfectly and no one says a thing, but spell one word wrong :(
CM:  Glad someone at Hope remembers that era, and the "Flying Dutchman".  It was so long ago I forgot most of the details but the skit was lol rof funny.  From the website posted earlier it mentions something about this in the mid 60's.  I do not recall ever seeing the Hope mascot of that era, but it does make sense that some Calvin students were having some fun spoofing the whole thing. :)  We sort of assumed it was Calvin students when the Flying Dutchman got killed. :D
FDF:  In those days we couldn't dance on campus, but cheerleaders were okay.  Go figure. :D

Sorry, realist, I just couldn't resist even though I now have opened myself up to a return shot from you the next time I mes up a speling. ;)

As for those carefree days when we couldn't dance on campus--who cares when you've got "parties with music" you can attend?::) :-X

In the future, I hope to see zany, though tasteful, highjinks from the mascot.

Like stealing banners.........or big yellow foamy hats ;) :D ;D

Again - so long as there are no ketchup or mustard stains. It may be a sorry commentary on my life, but the stolen banner prank was a highlight of it.

As someone closely involved in the "stolen" banner prank you all bring back the fondest of college memories. Go Hope!

And getting punched by the ref for your trouble.

I was punched by the ref!!! Oh was I mad too! I can only think of one person who would qualify as a Hope Convert that knows of that day. Would I be correct in asking if Thomas Jefferson is still one of your least favorite presidents?

Did you hear? :o

I just got my copy of the Hope College Presidential Update and one of the "Highlights" of the update has to do with a special guest.  That's right.  Hope College has invited Dr. Myles Brand, President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), to be its guest on February 7, when Hope plays Calvin in Men's Basketball at the DeVos Fieldhouse.  Dr. Brand is attending the game to celebrate Hope's 50 years of membership in the NCAA.  Dr. Brand will also be spending most of the day on Hope's campus talking with faculty, students, staff and community members about intercollegiate sport.

Now that's cool!   ;D

And for the rest of you who didn't get the update or recognize the name, Dr. Brand was the University President that fired Bob Knight at IU.

Like I said before, leave the cheerleaders and mascots to Hope.  I hope when Calvin gets their new fieldhouse they don't get any bright ideas like this.

Cause Calvin can't do it any better???

Or is it: "To Hell with school spirit... Just showing up at the Calvin/Hope game in our yellow shirts is enough for Calvin students... Go Calvin!!!"

Actually Calvin didn't "give out" yellow shirts to students this year.  A lot of people had to wear maroon:(.

But what are you suggesting?  That all Calvin students only go to Calvin/Hope games?

Both the Hope and Calvin mascots look pretty goofy to me. I absolutely hate Disneyfied mascots of that sort. But I'll say this: Neither "Dutch" nor the armored sausage have anything on Carthage's mascot in the dorkiness department. Carthage developed a costumed mascot several years ago, probably to stave off any further attempts to inflame the PC police by using an American Indian reference in connection to the Redmen nickname. Since a torch is prominently featured on Carthage's school seal, the new mascot was supposed to be a large torch. In case you couldn't figure that out -- and, believe me, the whole torch concept is not what automatically strikes you the first time you see this monstrosity -- the character was named "Torchy". However, given the fact that what it most closely resembles is a giant gray tuber, Carthage people usually refer to the mascot as "the Turnip".

I guess it would be cool to have the NCAA President come to your campus. But, is it cool if the guy is a total idiot?

Whether he was suggesting it or not, it is the truth.  I went to Calvin from '90-'94 and you had to get to the gym during the JV game if you wanted to sit in the student section.

I was at the Calvin-Albion game a couple of weeks ago, and the student section was only 1/4 full of students at best.  I go to 1 or 2 games a year and student attendance is WAY, WAY down from what is was about 10 years ago.

Not sure why.

I couldn't believe how empty the fieldhouse was last week. There were about 25-30 student's  maybe.  They were pretty lame,  not what I've seen in the past. But, I've always thought Calvin kids had a touch of fairweatherness to them.

K's student section has flat out been awful over the past  5 or so years.  This year,  they had a solid contingent at the Tri-State game, but the kids  just stood there and did nothing.  Gone are the days of the Stingers, coming into AAC single file about 2 minutes before tip,  all painted up, and ready to go nutso on the opposing team.

Because of the way the postseason games are usually officiated, I would expect that a good big man will get the schnockers  (Dutch swear word)  beat out of him in the post by Reimink and Richardson (very physical kids) and they would double.

Reimink and Richardson were both in foul trouble against Calvin's post players.  Also, a good big man would probably be very used to dealing with whatever R & R could dish out.  I don't think any quality post player is going to be shaking in his boots facing those 2.  I rather think they might be licking their chops.  :P

I think that's a fair comment.

I don't agree - sure they had a bad game against Calvin, but I've also seen Richardson shut down Crawford in two different games last year.  I'd say that we won't see many big men better than that.

Ok, I know you havent seen many HOPE games but as I said before....Calvin didnt play in the post!!!  They ran ball and slip screens out on the perimeter...all Reiminks fouls and 2 of Richardsons fouls came on either perimeter play by hedging out too hard or helping on dribble penetration by Calvins guards.  I am just saying in the post defense ALWAYS favors the physically stronger defender.

I also think that Mantel is a quality big man but most of his points came on jumpers or pick and rolls, not post moves!

Basketball today (especially the way the post is officiated) does NOT favor the "back to the basket" big man....that is in Hopes favor.

I can't believe I beat bulldogalum or any of the other Adrian fans out there in reporting this story. There is a new press release on Adrian's website (www.adrian.edu). Based on the buzz created by Hope's new mascot, the Bulldogs didn't want to feel left out, and will have a brand new mascot of their own. On their road game at K-Zoo, Adrian will introduce their new mascot, a real Bulldog who will take a place at the end of the team bench. There was no mention of who provided Adrian with the animal.

In an unrelated news story, the police log for Athens, GA showed a call made to police about a missing bulldog named UGA. The owners believe the dog was stolen.

So, if a team gameplans well against Hope it doesn't count against their ability to defend.  But if you play the way that Hope defends well, they are really good defenders.  Got it.
