Let's see: Calvin scored 105, Mantel had a big dunk toward the end, and I don't see the Calvin posters talking about not showing up the opposition. I was pleased to see some of them, however, address the complexity of playing a game when you are clearly outmanning the opposition. It is tough on a coach, and on a team. In those situations I'd also like to see the Hope fans back off. 100 is just a number, after all.

I knew this would come up at some point or another.  Hope and Calvin broke triple digits in completely different situations.  Hope regained posession with the shot clocked turned off but put up a shot with 4 seconds to go to hit 100.  Calvin clearly hit 100 at a time in the game where it would be far more embarassing to the other team to just dribble the ball and take a shot clock violation.  I think its ok to keep shooting if you do so because you're still subject to a shot clock.  Reverse the teams in each situation and I would still feel the same way.  I wouldn't call Hope's actions completely classless, just a lapse in better judgement when you look back at it.  As far as I'm concerned, the issue is put to rest.

Yeah, the 4 paragraph reply dripping with sarcasm was 86ed just before it made it to the board.

Vera 86 ya, or was that self imposed?

Self-imposed.  I've inherited my Dad's knack for using many... many... many words to say a few things.  :)  I'll try not to let that happen here...too much.   ;)

P. S.  I don't think I've had even one Huber since that trip.  But I still have a warm place in my heart for that little Wisconsin concoction.  (Warm...then cold...then warm...then...  :D)

Zig-  I agree with you to a point, but then your arguments start to fall apart.

To clarify:  Hope's first 101 game and Calvin's 105 game were very similar game situations.  In the last 4 minutes, I think Hope scored maybe 4 points.  They had the same shot clock issue.  So they weren't exactly burning up the nets either.

Hope's second 101 game (we have extras) did exhibit a lack of better judgement, but by only one player...a freshman from the end of the bench.  I was there.  GVW was waving the defense off.  When the kid stole the ball, GVW was literally "hopping" mad at his player.

Chalk it up to youth, adrenaline, or whatever you want, but stop questioning these people's class.  Everyone.  Really.  Have fun and let have fun.

Good morning, everyone.  I can tell everyone is ready for Saturday!  I agree with Erm.    I think it's fine to make a comment about whether a particular play/approach, etc. seems wise or prudent, but to try to examine the heart/motive and make judgement calls on that is a waste of time.  Obviously, some of these conversations go way back and it's hard to tell sometimes if it's "all in fun" or if there's a knife in there somewhere.  Not sure when all the "WWKVSD" stuff started, hopefully, not way back when the "WWJD" bracelets came out because that was a long time ago!  Anyway, I haven't seen any "WWKVSD" bracelets at Calvin, maybe I missed an era.  I say give everyone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to heart/motive issues, and let's....."PLAY BALL!"

P.S. You're all invited to my concert next Friday night. :)  You know, change the pace a little bit.  Details at http://debmantel.com/concerts.php.

I do recall a t-shirt however.  In fact, we have a picture of it somewhere.

I never did get one of those... And as the creator of the fine slogan, should have. Maybe, VG, you can whip me up one before next years satellite party... huh?

It started last year (not that I am trying to start something now!!), when we discussed the prudence of adding DVS to the Hope roster part-way through the year--some questioned the integrity of GVW (a man dripping with integrity, IMHO, not that I know him well).  Some questioned the wisdom of that move, and team chemistry did seem to be a problem for Hope's underachieving (IMHO) team last year.  Looking back form this year's perpective, bringing in DVS was a great move for this year's team, even if it might[/b] have hurt last year's performance(pure conjecture).  Whatever the outcome, some postulated that a mid-season transfer would not be handled the same way with KVS, hence WWKVSD?

Did anyone else notice at the Olivet game that the Olivet announcer continued to call Hope the "Dutch", instead of the "Dutchmen".  Maybe its just a personal irritation of mine.  After all he didn't call the "Comets", the "Lady Comets".  But what do you expect from a second rate college.

NB:With Calvin having scored 105 last night it might not be wise to keep beating that particular drum. ;)

What???

Negative Karma - that's horse doo doo.

I don't use foul language the joke was clean (by the way that joke could have been made much dirtier!).  I refrained.  Still negative Karma.

Carl - glad you liked it.

One day a Briton, a Scotsman, and an Dutchman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints, and were stuck in the thick head. The Brit pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scot fished the fly out of his beer, and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Dutchman, too, picked the fly out of his drink, held it out over the beer, and started yelling, "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT YOU BAS**RD!!!!"

One more day!!! I call upset - Kresge should be a rockin - H_ _ _ the students get right drunk before the game.  Remember when they used to let students tailgate behind the gym.  Good times.

Did Evan Hare ever finish up at Hope or did he quit?

NATHAN - Give me some Karma you haters!

I've never agreed with calling someone's choice of college as second rate, not everyone can afford the 30,000+ per year it takes at Albion, Kzoo, Hope etc.  I've met plenty of good people who went to Olivet who have very nice careers in Education, Insurance and Optometry.

Olivet always reminds of a place that time and money forgot.  Every MIAA town was once as small as Olivet, who knows why Olivet didn't grow.  There was once a railroad but it disappeared long ago, and since its primarily a rural area, industry never seemed to find the little village.

I always thought the college did a poor job of promoting itself, I live and grew up in a town 20 minutes away and I'd bet a good portion have never heard of Olivet College.

As for the wrestling, the area surrounding Olivet is a hotbed for high school wrestling.  My HS has won several State Championships over the years.  A number of schools in the area are very good at wrestling such as Jackson County Western, Jackson Northwest, Mason, Lakewood, Holt, Springport.  Its really no surprise a few would end up at Olivet and want to have a wrestling program.  Wrestling was once an MIAA sport, Olivet just chose to keep their program.

Also a pet peeve of mine...I noticed that oldknight referred to Hope as "the Dutch" in an earlier post and I shook my head at that too.

Considering that my work board is currently empty aside from basketball pads for Americas High School (anybody know where that is?) I can probably get you that shirt in a few days.

I've gotten to know GVW a little in the past couple of years and have the hgihest regard not only for his personal integrity, but I have been struck but how deeply he cares about his players - every one of them. I can see why guys would love to play for him. Sometimes, in fact, he may care too much. I don't think DVS was a factor in last year's team underachieveing (and I agree they did). Philips was never the same player after his injury, and we've already discussed Voison's "softness." 0 points/0 rebounds against Wittenberg. Ugh. And DVS is clearly paying dividends this year. The team is mentally much tougher.
