Its a little odd to read that games were cancelled for blizzards when it was in the mid to upper 70s and a georgeous sunny day out here in Cali. I went for an afternoon run in short sleeves before heading out to Pomona for the evening D3 game I attended. Tomorrow I will probably head to the beach after church.... weird.

If any MIAA teams want to play their rescheduled games in weather worry-free So Cal, it would sure make this D3 fan happy! :D

WOW!!! Now I know no one is overstating how bad it was yesterday.

Two thoughts

--------One thing (of many) I learned living in Holland is that when they issue a blizzard warning, they're serious and you really don't want to be out in one.  This is an area of the state where 6 inches of snow is like brushing flakes off your coat.  Its not necessarily the snow, its the cold, imagine running off a road and asking yourself if your really prepared to be outside for any length of time with windchills in the -20's.  Absolutely the right decision today, and who cares who was first to cancel.

--------Wooster's Timken gym got very loud toward the end of the Witt game and it made me miss the old Civic Center............Come on Hope fans make some noise! :)

No question but that it was the right decision to cancel the games (and churches). It's still snowing, for those of you in DC and SoCal (grrrrrr).

It's true: as nice as the new fieldhouse is, there was something special about the Civic Center - as bad a dump as that was. But the atmosphere could be electric in there in a way I haven't seen in "The Dick," and I doubt we will. The good news, is that I don't worry now about the bleachers collapsing when the Dew Crew does their "in the galleys of a trireme" thing.

I've just seen Tiger Woods pop up a 5-wood, and now chip a ball sideways into a bunker from just off the green. Could it be we are nearing the end of time?

Given sections of 131 were being shut down yesterday and that highway would be included in a Holland to Albion drive, I'm sure there wasn't much debate about cancelling the game. I actually was one of the idiots driving yesterday because I'm in Holland this weekend for a couple parties. It's nice to be out where other people are dealing with the snow, but I'm not happy about the fact that by now, all signs of my shoveling from yesterday are probably buried.

It sounds like there were areas with some problems with slickness on some of the highways. Everywhere that I drove through Grandville and on 196, traction wasn't much of an issue, but visibility definitely was with both falling and blowing snow.  Who the heck goes out in that crap and doesn't turn their lights on???

Wednesday's game will have just one more interesting side note now. I would think since this is already the third time around, there isn't much need for hours and hours of scouting the opponent, but it'll be interesting to see if playing the games just 48 hours apart on Monday and Wednesday affects the Hope Calvin players. I would have to imagine GVW and KVS will be trying to share minutes along the whole bench as evenly as the game allows them to on Monday.

As far as the Hope/Calvin game, which team does the delay favor?  I have to think that with Hope's much touted deep bench, it has to be a decided advantage for them.

When that happens can there be any doubt that the Apocalypse is upon us? Hopefully the Lord tarries until late Wednesday night. ;)

Lights didn't make any difference when the 40-mph wind gusts blew all that fluffy lake-effect snow around -- there were moments when I couldn't see more than a couple of feet.

There were numerous accidents and a few multi-car pileups. One of the hwy 131 closures was due to a 70-car pileup. Fortunately there were no serious injuries because everyone was driving so slowly.

If you did get into an accident or go off the road, I hope you had a hat and mittens along to keep you warm in the -20 wind chill temperatures.

Can you imagine a college authorizing a bus full of students to travel to a game on a day like that?

Weather wise Monday doesn't look to be a great improvement.  Granted we will be lacking the snow, but the cold certainly will be a factor.  Stepped outside last night before checking the thermometer and I wasn't dressed nearly warm enough.  Came back in and realized it was a balmy -6.

My church cancelled last night at 7:00 pm, heard that others were calling off by 5:00 pm.  Granted we Methodists aren't as fervent as the RCA and CRC folk.

In 1994 the K team almost didn't make it to Calvin Fieldhouse to play Hope in the MIAA semifinals because of some really nasty weather.  131 shut down, one of the vans was almost taken out by a snow plow somewhere near Middleville (then  Asst Coach RP behind the wheel),  and the team showed up to the gym with 10 minutes before tip-off.

Why should I have pity? It may be sunny and warm outside but I still live in D3 basketball siberia! Trust me, if it was just about my social life and hobbies, I would not be living in So Cal. I liked my chicago and DC churches a thousand times better, and the general culture in those areas tend to be more comfortable than here. I think palm trees are dumb, and i miss pine trees like the ones in the northwoods of wisconsin and michigan like crazy. I really really miss having a billion teams within a day's driving distance. I used to be able to think "hmm, i wonder if they are really a top 25 team" and then hop in my car and find out on a random day or relatively inexpensive overnight trip. Now i need to buy plane tickets! Or listen to the awful Wheaton broadcasters. The only plusses about living here are that there are mountains and ocean less than an hour from my house, 4 national parks within 6hrs, and the weather. And my job, i looove my job. So if i can gloat about that, you can gloat about everything else. This is just a big case of the grass is always greener. I have no pity. :P :D ;) Make a snow angel for me! :) :) :)

Incidentally , cause you guys will find this funny, in So Cal people actually MAKE snow and pile it places. And no, not just ski places... Petco Park, where the Padres play, had two feet of snow dumped on the field so kids could play in it before Christmas. They did the same thing at the San Diego Zoo if i'm not mistaken. Is this dumb given the fact that there are mountains covered in snow only an hour or two away? Yes, but it saves the lame so cal drivers the trouble of driving in snow. Which is a good thing, because when it RAINS people panic and stay indoors or slide of the road and get stuck in a ditch. :D

NB:  Doubt either Calvin or Hope get an advantage out of Monday.  Only possible one would be Hope has to play, and travel back from Albion.  Expect the real tired legs to show up in the Sat. games. ;)  Remember several years ago when the rivalry game was postponed?
Stinger.  I remember the K team showing up late for warm ups.  Yes, that was a very wet, heavy snow.

I remember that. I had traveled to one of the satellite sites in the Akron area, only to find the game was canceled.

No - I doubt either team will get an advantage out of this. I hope the weather lightens up a bit to make the trip to Albion safe.
