Its finally here. I am wearing my orange and blue sweater for the occassion. I left the khaki pants, blue sport coat and matching orange and blue tie in the closet. I think I am going to buy the socks and dress as GVW for Halloween next year :)

That would be pretty scary, expecially if you bring some kid with you for trick or treat who is a potential midseason transfer. ;) ::)

It'd be 82-60 if it weren't for the lousy 70's.

???

I'll explain Al since most Hopesters would prefer to forget the decade of the 70's, and not just because that's when we wore doubleknits and leisure suits (I don't even want to mention bellbottoms). Calvin won every game in The Rivalry that decade--21 in total--and if you can conveniently forget that the decade ever happened Hope goes up 82-60.

I knew what the record was in the 70's.  My initial response was to show incredulity toward dropping a whole decade worth of games.

Using Hope Converts logic, a Calvin fan could ask " What would the record be if you counted the games  that were played only on a 94' floor "?

I guess that depends on whether using an illegal floor should only be counted against Hope's wins and should not be used by Hope as a defense against any losses that occurred on the illegitimate hardwood. Sounds like we need a good lawyer to ferret out the legal issues involved. What about it bulldogalum, shouldn't the equitable doctrine of unclean hands apply?

Luckily for me, I only came around in the very late '70's, when Hope's losing streak to Calvin came to a screetching halt--and I have the laminated newspaper articles to prove it!  ;D   (I'll plead the 5th on the bellbottoms and doubleknits.) ;)

Why all the excitement?  Must be that big Duke-Carolina game tonight! ;)
That's a pretty decent rivalry too. But there, the stakes are too low to make it really meaningful.

I cringed when I saw dren suggest it was time to hoist another banner. I knew that would not go by unremarked. All I can say to that is: 82-81. It'd be 82-60 if it weren't for the lousy 70's. That was just a bad decade all the way around.

Don't start down that road now. Arguments like this always remind me of Ohio State message board fans who like to show how Michigan doesn't really have any advantage in the all time series when you select all the right time periods strategically. I always end up hearing these arguments as "the series is dead even... if you just don't count the times when we sucked" or "we're undefeated... in all games in which we didn't lose."

Let's just build some breathing room into the series record by taking a 2 game lead tonight. (Also, I've never checked this out, but I know the rivalry history indicates Calvin disputes the very first Hope game played as not an actual contest. Does the current 163 game count include that disputed game or not?)

The Rivalry tshirts that were made several years ago shows the first game  in the 1920-21 season with Hope winning 29-13.  Is that the disputed one?

And who knows how many the National Championships Calvin could've won in that decade if the MIAA let them play in the national tournament.  The Mark Veenstra and Mark Hogewind combo could not be stopped  ;D

And Hope had some dominance of their own in a period of the rivalry with winning 10 straight games in the  mid-90s.  Calvin won 5 straight I know about 5 years ago.  Hope's won 4 straight, lets hope there's not another long run like the ones I mentioned before with Calvin and Hope  :-\

IIRC the disputed first game is not included in the 163 game total.  The Calvin "team" that played in that game was not officially recognized by Calvin, and thus that game is not included.  It was played in 1917 and was rather lopsided, with Hope winning 45-8.
