By my calculation, this will bring Hope's average league margin of victory to 25 pts.

MIdoubleA

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So many emotions... I'll start alphabetically.

Angry: Officials, please decide what is and is not a jump ball. It is unfair to both teams to flip a coin every time more than 1 person is touching the ball.

Baffled: GVW continues to confuse. Kratz takes down 5 rbs in a span of a few minutes... and you take him out? Was the rebounding margin not big enough?

Embarassed: As a Hope student and college student in general, I'm extremely embarassed at the poor sportsmanship displayed on both sidelines. To whomever decided that sending a small child to 400 screaming, riled-up college kids in a rivalry like this was a good idea: shame on you. That child is the scapegoat of a heated competition between men on a basketball court. Don't send him over to the lions den. Where are the parents?

To Mr. Istealflagsfromkidsandgocrazy, are you aware of what you did? The president of the NCAA was in attendance, wearing a Hope colored tie nonetheless, and you had to go and do that. If I were you, I'd be drafting several letters of apology. I almost left the game.

Excited: What a great game. While it hurts to lose, I much prefer those games to the 30pt blowouts.

Loathing: The V's have it. Veldhouse and Veltema put up shots that don't actually adhere to basic rules of physics, but they still find the bottom of the bucket. Grrr.

Proud: Huge halftime deficit turned in to a 2 point lead. Bravo, Dutch.

Suprised: Calvin couldn't have shot better in the opening minutes and Hope couldn't have shot worse. Didn't see that one coming...

Tired: After standing, screaming, cheering and jumping for the better part of 2 hours, I am exhausted.

As if stealing (and causing a slight tear) big yellow hats wasn't enough!

I wonder if anyone took the opportunity to express to Dr. Brand just how bad the DIII basketball tournament selection process is.

I had written it down as a question, but it wasn't presented to him.

I see that Myles Brand has changed his necktie...

Yes, he was provided with a new Hope College necktie, and looked dashing in it.  Comic note: a student read the NCAA and MIAA rules on fan behavior before the game. The student's name? Bobby Knight.

calvin   out rebounded hope by a lot   i think also the league schould have the best refs in the league doing the game not the 3 worst refs in the league they missed a lot of cals what a shame

Layup drills first thing Thursday morning, good gosh. Our 3-pt percentage was pretty 'meh' and yet I'm not sure our shooting percentage inside of 3 feet was any better. Calvin certainly played hard, but to have Cramer lay such an egg and for the whole team to squander as many easily makeable buckets as they did... well, it would not have taken Hope's A+ game to get a win tonight, but they did need to capitalize on their chances and finish down the stretch. After the way Hope could not finish a game in the last 5 minutes last year, I was excited by their putting away a close game at Calvin. Now that same fear comes back; coming into the MIAA tourney and the NCAA tourney, can we win a game in which we don't have a 12 point lead to cling to for the final minutes?

Echoing MIdoubleA on the officials below: they seemed to have a hard time deciding what defined a lot of calls. I noticed a few times where two officials would converge on a play with different calls and just look at each other until one of them changed his mind, or two officials would be right on top of a foul and one of them would have no intention of calling a foul the other one did call. I found myself saying "well at least they won't give them that call either" a few times though, so I guess good job screwing up in both directions at least.

After the first 5 minute run, I'd be tempted to say "well that's what happens when one team can't miss and the other can," but shooting percentages didn't end up too far off. So I guess that's what happens when one team gets all the rebounds.

And since we will probably meet again in the MIAA title game, can someone put a hand in Veltema's face?? I think I saw him square up, lick his finger, and check the wind before one of his 3's and there still wasn't anyone in his face yet.

It looked to me that they were calling just about everything, a few too many for my liking.  If anything, I give them credit for keeping their cool when some players showed obvious frustration with some whistles.

Note to Hope's defense: Matt Veltema can shoot the 3. You might want to try covering him sometime.

Note to GVW: You have a deep bench. Use it.

Note to Stephen Cramer: Where were you tonight? Some impostor took your place.

Note to officials: When the defensive player pushes the offensive player, that is a foul. It is not out-of-bounds, and it is not a travel.

Another note to GVW: When your team gives up four layups on the first four possessions, call a time out and reset your defense.

I am heartbroken. Calvin played a tough, hard game. Hope looked out of sorts all night, and but for the efforts of Jesse Reimink would have been run out of the gym.  Calvin outhustled, outshot, and outcoached Hope tonight. Congratulations to them.

For those who weren't there, it was an absolutely electric atmosphere in The Dick tonight. The game was as exciting as the conclusion disappointing. Kratz and Klein both demonstrated they should be getting more playing time than Richardson. MVH was pedestrian, and Cramer didn't even achieve that. Veltema was money for Calvin, Griffin was a dagger early, Smith had a nice game, Meckes played tough. KVS did a great job substituting.

By the way, I saw someone wearing an orange WWKVS shirt tonight. Anyone on here?

Calvin got a lot of long rebounds early in the game, but did a good job following their shots. Hope did not do as good a job at that. And Hope had a lot of good looks early, but were very tentative in their shooting.

Good one on Veltema spotting up. :D

For those of you not watching on tv or the internet. Another thing that Calvin won tonight was the battle of promotional commercials. They had a much better voice over guy and overall I thought the quality of their promos was better than Hope's. I hope we can work on this as well for next year.  ???
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.
