For those of you not watching on tv or the internet. Another thing that Calvin won tonight was the battle of promotional commercials. They had a much better voice over guy and overall I thought the quality of their promos was better than Hope's. I hope we can work on this as well for next year.  ???

Calvin needs it more, see # of applicants over the past few years.

Just what the doctor ordered.   Thanks to whoever posted about the WGVU giveaway to the first 30 folks who logged in.  I wasn't able to be at the game tonight due to illness, and I was one of the first 30, so I got to watch the game on my computer.  Kind of like being there, but not exactly, though it was a very short ride home back to Chelsea!

Calvin's acceptance rate is much higher than Hope's. Around 97%, which is one of the highest in the nation. They also have about the highest legacy rate in the nation.

Speaking of legacy students, I take it we won't be seeing your children in line to get in since they can get that superior Hope education for free?

I think the schools are equal educationally. They'd be fine either way.  :)

Wow, look at that. You had a chance to stir up even more trouble and you actually went the diplomatic route. Will wonders never cease!

Adrian 63
Olivet 44

A really nice game from the Bulldogs tonight.  They played a very patient offensive game, and took very few bad shots en route to an easy win over Olivet tonight.  Desmond Young had his second straight big game for the Bulldogs, cruising to 20 points.  Ian Weber had 11 for the Bulldogs.

More impressive than the offensive effort tonight, though, was Adrian's defensive play.  Every Olivet shot was contested, and they could never really get anything going.  Had the Comets not a) kept several starters in for the last few minutes, b) pressed for the last 4 minutes, and c) called timeouts to set up plays against the end of the Adrian bench, there's no way Olivet would have scored 40 points.

This was a big win for Adrian, putting them one win closer to a home game to open the MIAA tournament, and giving them some confidence heading into two straight difficult road tests.

I must admit I'm disappointed by the Hope-Calvin result tonight.  I had a feeling that Hope was due to get beat at the Dick, I was just hoping that Adrian would be the team to do it  when they travel there this Saturday.  Unfortunately, the Knights beat us to the punch.  Oh well, I guess we'll have to settle for being the second team to beat Hope at DeVos. ;)  Hey, I can dream, can't I? ;D

Not starting a debate about admission standards.

I thought Calvin was having trouble filling their Freshman classes, they were a couple years ago.  Hope doesn't have enough room for its Freshman classes, .........thats all I meant.

The NCAA did a nice job blogging the game tonight and providing some video. If you haven't checked it out yet, go to:

At the risk of massive Karma loss, I offer up an excuse: football. The two men responsible for getting the most students to Hope? God and Dean Kreps.

:o :P ;) :D

Calvin did the dictating tonight, and played with the kind of energy that Knight fans have been waiting (not too patiently) to see.
The officiating was spotty, to say the least, although if I were a Hope fan I wouldn't lean too hard in that direction.
Your Dutchmen were outworked and outcoached tonight.

A number of people (including me) have remarked that one unfortunate consequence of the move to Hope's new facility is that a lot of noise and energy is lost due to its size and comfort. Such was not the case tonight. I thought the Dick was every bit as noisy, exciting and energetic as any game at the Civic--especially when Hope made its comeback. It showed to me if the game is close, important and exciting that DeVos is as good a venue as the Civic in terms of excitement. It also proved that the game (and it's fans)--more than the location--is what's important.

Calvin won because for the first time this year a sense of urgency was obvious the entire first half. They caught Hope flatfooted and played what was easily Calvin's best first half of the season. I know they shot well but they were taking good shots too. As has been noted Calvin dominated the boards giving Hope no second shots and that hurts when, as was the case with Hope, your first shot isn't going in. Calvin's defense was outstanding and rendered both Cramer and Vanderheide quite ordinary looking, something I didn't expect to see.

At half I remarked that Calvin was likely to need every bit of their 11 point lead. You knew Hope was going to make a run but Reimink going 6 for 6 from beyond the arc? That was unexpected. In the end Hope fans must be most disappointed by the fact that the boys were again unable to make big plays down the stretch in a close game.

Finally, I think I will lodge a complaint with the NCAA against Myles Brand. How dare he wear a Hope orange and blue tie? Here's a man in serious need of sensitivity training. I'm  :o :o that he would be so insensitive and take sides in The Rivalry. ;)

Take a look at the website to see their comments on "The Rivalry." Brand said at lunch today that he thinks there will be no basketball game in the country this week more hotly or passionately contested than this one. The only difference with Duke/Carolina, he said, is genetics, not competitive desire. He missed all the theological issues at stake, but I suppose that would be too much to expect from a philosopher.

A political scientist too! ;)
