Well, there's not much more to be said about tonight, except perhaps to wonder if the tough game and long bus trip on Monday added to the mix for the Dutchmen.  That, and wondering if Sac was forgetting to chew his gum.  But hey, no excuses -- we didn't shoot well, we didn't rebound well in the first half, and, to use oldknight's expression, we looked flatfooted much of the time.  (And yes, there were some suspect calls, but overall I didn't find the reffing to be terrible).

I have come to expect some classless acts from the fans, but there weren't many this evening (and I hope we don't discuss fan behavior here).  The one Calvin fan action that will stay with me for a long time was done by our own goodknight.  As MVH fouled out, goodknight was the first person in the whole place on his feet and applauding his effort.  Thanks, goodknight.  That's what this rivalry is all about -- competing whole heartedly, for sure, but respecting each other's efforts as well.  You made my day.
2014 MIAA Pick 'Em Champion  :)

Interestingly, Calvin has now won twice as many games at DeVos than they have lost.  Current record there now stands at 4-2.  Looks like they are becoming very comfortable in that facility.

DVS is a solid three point shooter, but surprising slow for a DI transfer.  I think his lethargic defense cost Hope the game.  How many times, especially in the opening minutes, did Calvin players blow right past him.

My first trip to the DeVos.  Good little DIII facility, but if it were in my master plan, I'd design it to seat about 5,000.  What's with all the empty space in front of the facility that is being wasted by not being turned into much needed parking space?

Once again, MIAA officiating lived up to my now very low expectations.

Cramer may have had an off night, but after watching him many times, clearly the one player (maybe the only one) that I would most like to see in a maroon and gold uniform.

Very solid game by Dustin Smith.

Nice pregame feature on the Sopranos and their rendition of the national anthem.

Very evident why KVS has a national championship and DIII coach of the year award under his belt.

When did sac start ending his posts with "Hope College----We're loser"?

Being a "NEWBY" to the D3 HOOPS chat room (but not a new Hope fan) I'd just like to say this rivalry is still at it's finest, 2 great schools playing a great game. Sure, we can talk about Hope not coming out of the gate strong or playing flatfooted or even take a shot or two at the ref's, but when the last light's turned off and everyone's at home I give both teams a HIP HIP and a hats off to C Knights.

Comic note: a student read the NCAA and MIAA rules on fan behavior before the game.

What was up with that?  Were we sucking up to Myles Brand?  Reading things like that does not change anyone's conduct at the game.

I thought GVW staying with the press for quite a bit of the first half helped Calvin.  Calvin has struggled all year long  in their half court offense.  Calvin got a lot of easy baskets against the press.  Calvin did a poor job of running their offense the second half.

GVW's rotation of players just seemed haphazard.  DVS sat 9 minutes the first half.  He sat 2 minutes  the second half.  It seems like he forgets about guys when he takes them out.

For a game like this can't the MIAA office at least send some of the top tier officials?

Frickin Veltema cost me on his last free throw, I had Calvin by 7 in Pickem.  Other than that he was pretty good tonight.  ;)

Embarassed: As a Hope student and college student in general, I'm extremely embarassed at the poor sportsmanship displayed on both sidelines. To whomever decided that sending a small child to 400 screaming, riled-up college kids in a rivalry like this was a good idea: shame on you. That child is the scapegoat of a heated competition between men on a basketball court. Don't send him over to the lions den. Where are the parents?

To Mr. Istealflagsfromkidsandgocrazy, are you aware of what you did? The president of the NCAA was in attendance, wearing a Hope colored tie nonetheless, and you had to go and do that. If I were you, I'd be drafting several letters of apology. I almost left the game.

I watched the game on TV, so I didn't get to see any of this.  What exactly happened?  (For the record, I think the sending the kid around to the other side is a little overdone, but what exactly did the Hope fans do?)

wow sorry guys for the jinxing-i thought wittenberg and wooster might have the chance to knock off hope at home, but calvin beat them to it

what did you do to get negative 31 karma in less than 300 posts?

Wow, what a night.  It was nice to see Calvin finally step up and play a first half.  Give the Knights some credit, the last two games were not just off nights for Hope.  Calvin got after it on defense and got some good looks on defense.

The officiating was poor, which we come to expect from the MIAA.  I think it ended up being fair though.  Terrible calls were made at the wrong time against both teams.  Shooting and rebounding won this game.

It seemed to me that Calvin played with intensity (too much at times, if there is such a thing) and Hope didn't really show up until ten minutes to go.  As someone mentioned to me all game, Caleb came up with big shots.  I haven't looked at the numbers but whenever the team needed him he found a way to score the ball.

Great to see Maroon and Gold on the court after the game!

(One of the Calvin students yelled "The BCS has got to go" to Myles Brand.)

Not starting a debate about admission standards.

I thought Calvin was having trouble filling their Freshman classes, they were a couple years ago.  Hope doesn't have enough room for its Freshman classes, .........thats all I meant.

I know in the dorms, some people have to live in the coffee kitchens(like the RAs) because there's no other room for them in the dorm.

All I've got to say is "that's why they play the game"

Well Calvin was favored to win the league, and they have played well the past couple of games, so.....yeah, why not play it.

Just to respond to the initial posting.....as one of the parents of the child.  We had told him that he could not do his usual crowd routine at the game because we didn't think that the Hope students would be able to handle it with class.  The Hope students came over and brought a "transfer student application" and gave it to the people around him.  One line on the application was 4. We have real cheerleaders not just some dumb little kid with a flag.

He was pretty upset by that and the Calvin students saw that and asked if they could carry him around on their shoulders.  When they were in front of the hope section one of the students grabbed his flag and stomped on it.  I thought it pretty classless of the Hope contingent that they could find nothing better to pick on than a five year old that loves the Knights so much that he begs to attend the games so he can "help" the team by being ball boy and occasionally running with the flag to get the crowd fired up.

Some thoughts(watched the game on TV)

-I thought Calvin also missed some easy shots down low, at least in the 2nd half

-When Hope went up 67-65, they had the momentum from coming back from a huge deficit, the home-crowd and everything.  I think most Calvin fans(at the spur moment) including me thought Calvin was going to have a slim chance to win this one.  Maybe Hope players got a little overconfident also?  Nice job by the Knights in not getting to raddled and fighting back.

-Calvin did seem to do a much better job at driving to the basket compared to Hope.  They were just quicker driving to the basket.

-Cramer.  He just wasn't aggressive tonight.  I expect him to return to his old form and finish the season nicely.  Look out.

-I guess you can say I have a "biased view" but were the refs really that bad?  Seems like in all the close Calvin-Hope games the refs are bad.  And I'm talking about either team winning, not just Calvin.  Maybe I had to be at the game to get a better view of the calls.

-Was it BW3's tonight, and there were plenty of games to watch at commercials(seeing MSU get killed, that was nice.  Duke-UNC, big soccer game, red wings)

-Don't know what happened to Calvin's offense during Hope's comeback period.  They were moving the ball too much behind the arc and weren't getting it down low too much.

-Hope fans.  Don't be too mad.  You're still going to win the league, and most likely get another chance at Calvin in the MIAA tourney.  Maybe two more times?

-I was impressed with Dustin Smith using his speed all night and barely turning it over.

BTW:  Thank you to the Hope cheerleader for getting his flag back for him.

You were right to hold your child back from doing his rounds around the court, obviously some students don't have the class to react properly - and I say that with sincerity. In my opinion, your son was the bigger man in that particular instance. The idiot Hope student that took the flag, stomped on it and threw it should be ashamed. As you mentioned, a more representative model of a Hope student was the cheerleader that returned it.

However, I just can't understand why you would let your little boy taunt the Dew Crew from 5 feet away with a Calvin flag.  Firing up your student section momentarily at the risk of angering another? I an no way approve of what happened, but what did you expect? Can you honestly say, with 100% assurance, that Calvin fans (or any others, for that matter) wouldn't have done the same?

Bad situation all-around augmented by bad decisions on both sides.

KnightSlappy

First off, no five year old should ever be refered to as 'dumb' and no five year old should have a flag ripped out of his hands even if he is 'angering' you.  Bad call hope student.
