Exactly. Hope had an advantage, and had no more bench minutes than Calvin.

Huh?  Calvin had the advantage in bench scoring.  Unless you meant advantage as in better bench production coming into the game, then I'm confused.

I find it interesting that Hope's first two baskets were scored by Cramer and Vanderheide.  Cramer didn't score for the rest of the half. And Vanderheide's second half consisted of 5 fouls, 0 rebounds, and 1 pont.  Hope needs these two to show up big, especially in a rivalry game.  I think the Calvin Defense did a good job of keeping them contained.

On a side note Hope's deep, deep bench was outscored by Calvin's 25-12.
Hope's deep, deep bench wasn't in the game much. :( ???

As already noted a check of the box shows the two benchs almost even in minutes. Hope's non-starters played 70 minutes while Calvin's got 69. Klein got the most bench minutes for Hope with 25 and I thought he played very well for Hope even if he only scored 2 points. Hope's bench scoring woes were led by the poor shooting of Partridge (3-9 for the game and 0-5 from the arc) and Wolfe (1-6 and 0-3). Calvin's bench was led by Veltema who scored 15 in only 15 minutes of playing time (including 4-7 from 3). Matt was the "X" factor in the game and whichever team gets that player usually wins in this series.

Hope's bench coming into this game was an advantage it had over Calvin.  Better production, little difference in intensity between the starters and the "second unit".  That's why I think many of us were surprised not to see more of the bench last night.  Klein played well as mentioned, but Kratz played just as well in his mere 8 minutes.  Still only 2 points, but more than half as many rebounds in less than a third the amount of time.  Sac is right on that these two should have been allowed to play more together.
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

The MIAA statement is supposed to be read before every sporting event by a student-athlete from the host school.  It shouldn't be odd, or comic , it's what is supposed to happen.

Correct, although I think it is typically done by the PA announcer

Watching the TV before the game, I was hoping Myles Brand was going to read it. :)

Unfortunately the Sentinel article is right that we are likely a one representative conference this year. (Though has it been confirmed that this is only our 2nd in-region loss? If that is the case, then perhaps Hope would be OK for an at-large bid with a 3rd loss in the conference tourney, but I'd rather not leave it to chance.)

The regional rankings are from the NCAA, hopefully they wouldn't have made a mistake.  Even if this was their third, looking at the rankings, I don't see them falling from fourth after this loss.

There was a lot of talk on the Top 25 board that the Carthage lost was not an in-region game for Hope and the NCAA did count it as an in-region game. It sounds like that may not be the only mistake from reading that board last night and that Pat has said he will mention the possible problems to the NCAA before next week.

d3hoops.com has Carthage listed as in-region for Hope on last year's schedule but doesn't show it as in region the year before that.  Apparently no one knows for sure

The rules change sometimes between seasons, though I don't really take much time to go back to previous years' schedules once the season is over.

They made a Myles Brand joke by doing it actually. Not sure if you saw the other posts about it further back, but they found a Hope student named Bobby Knight and introduced him as the person who would read the MIAA sportsmanship statement. I'm not sure everyone heard the student introduced, and many probably didn't recognize the signifigance, but it was funny for those who caught on.

I want to know who in the athletic department was glancing through the student directory and noticed there was an entry for 'Knight, Robert' and decided to call him up for the role.

Yesterday I thought that Cartman video I posted best summed up the waiting game as we counted down the hours to the game. Now as I Hope fan, I feel like we're on the wrong end of this today:

That was a brilliant stroke. Apparently Hope's best bench player appeared just before opening tip but he never got another chance. ;)

I heard that there was a post a while back that said that the student's name was Bobby Knight.  I am surprised that no one has re-mentioned that post.

And why would Hope have a student named KNIGHT read it when they played Calvin?

According to a guy I work with who serves on the Hamilton Schools Atheletic Boosters, Mr. Knight is referred to as "Bobby" by those who know and love him.  He played football and basketball at Hamilton, and played D-back for Hope (#28).  But as legit a choice as he was for reading the announcement, I still had to LOL when they introduced him.   :D

Fantastic rivalry game again last night.  Calvin did everything it had to (and could) do to win.  Hope did everything the had to do to get behind early, but d really proved their ability in being able to maintain focus, and pull ahead at the end.  Frankly with the score tied I mentally awarded the W to Hope.  It appeared that Hope just ran out of gas a bit at the end.  It takes alot out of a team physically, and mentally to play catch up that long.  If I were a Hope fan I wouldn't be to discouraged.  Calvin simply did what it had to do to win.  Learn from this experience, and move on.   :)  I have to admit there were times I wasn't sure if KVS would get this years team to gel, but it seems to have happened, and not a minute to soon.

It will take a conference tournament title to get this Calvin team in the national tournament but with last night's game, they can look at this being a pretty good year.  From where they were earlier in the season to the game they played last night, you have to recognize the effort of all the coaches and players involved.

An interesting thought:

2 teams that were absent tonight:

The Hope team that beat Calvin by 22 earlier in the year, and the Calvin team that lost to 3State and Adrian.

By the way, I saw someone wearing an orange WWKVSD shirt tonight. Anyone on here?

ES and VG... And hopefully I have one in the mail w/ my name on it.

Just waiting for UPS Steve to stop by and pick it up ( along with your yearly supply of Wud'ja, ES Marinade, and VG Spice...Merry Christmas :-\)

I saw the Knight references, yes. I was relaying what I was thinking at the time of the broadcast, so I didn't know there was a Bobby Knight in the house.

Still, the thought of the head of the NCAA delivering what is essentially the association's pregame lecture on sportsmanship in person was amusing to me.
