Smiting wars:

Since I can't out-research SAC, I decided to simply research something meaningless: Karma per post, or KPP (maybe roughrider can give a cogent analysis):

Hope1                 -.003
HopeConvert        .006
Sac                       .012
Pat Coleman         .018
DCHopenut           .034
David Collinge       .054
NWHopefan          .059
Realist                  .071
Northb                  .104
Almcquirejr            .109
bulldogalum          .118
goodnight             .149
pointlem                .171
oldknight               .200

Cogent?   ???  Now where's that dang dictionary again!   ;)
northb, how about posts per game (PPG), if someone wants to do the research?  Or if you really want to get subjective, how about a content-per-post index (CPPI)?  Now that really leaves it wide open for opinions.   ;) :D :o

I was reminded today after watching highlights of the WMU basketball game, but THANKS to all of the coaches who "donned" sneakers in place of their regular shoes over the weekend to help p1romote "Coaches against Cancer."  Nice tribute and gesture.  Karma to the Coaches

A couple MIAA records to keep an eye on this week.........

Jesse Reimink's .677 MIAA 3pt percentage would break the old MIAA record of .653 by Hope's Greg Mitchell in 1988.........of course the trouble for Jesse is he could go .500 for the week and his average would drop.  .609 by Marcus VanderHeide last year is 3rd on the list.

Zak Silas' .932 from the FT line gives him a shot at the top 5 all-time in a single season.  #5 on that list is .933.

Lastly Hope's 9.67 3 pointers per game would finish #2 all-time in MIAA play, they need just 12 more to fit in the top 3 all-time 3's per game.  Tri-State's "system ball" season 2 years ago tops the list at 13.4

If VanderHeide ever gets going from 3 land this year LOOK OUT!!!  He played an outstanding floor game again on Saturday and scored a few points.

I think Hope's layup percentage is somewhere lower than their 3-point percentage....

I'm not sure who it was that wanted to know the names of Caleb Veldhouse's parents awhile back (I don't check the posts often enough!), but they are indeed Terry and Ladene.

This is a big week for the Hornets. With a win on Wednesday, coupled with a likely Alma loss to Hope pulls them out of the basement.  Alma has Hope, @ Adrian and Olivet is @K, Albion.

Best possible, #6 seed heading to Tri-State, worst, #8 going to the Dick.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Stinger,

If I had to guess, I'd say you're going to end up at Knollcrest, althought the Knights always seem to struggle against you guys down at the Rolla Dome, so maybe the #6 seed is not that big of a stretch.

Alma always seems to end up having to play at Hope in the first round (the last 6 years running - in fact Hope has only played 1 first round MIAA tournament game against anyone other than Alma, and it was Kalamazoo).  I suspect that somehow it will work out that way again.

Is it just me, or do the numbers indicate that Hope fans get smitten more than Calvin fans? Is this some sort of system of double predestination: the Calvin fans reward each other and damn the Hopesters? What type of harsh justice is in the knights' soul? Then again, the RCA has always had a kinder, gentler Calvinism.

Splendid deduction Watson!

between sympathy applauds I lost 10 on Wednesday night alone........imagine if Calvin had lost. ::)  ;D

You might also want to look back at those posts -- even Calvin fans sometimes have reasons for their smites. Saying that you want to knife someone may be crossing the line in some people's books, even if said with a smile on your face.

Personally, I rarely smite, unless the post involves name-calling, ad hominem, etc. I applaud more frequently, when posts make me laugh or are very informative or witty.

Isaac Smith completed his fourth double-double of the conference season (no one else has more than one) and his first MIAA player of the week award.  I think Isaac's name will be thrown around as possible MVP.  Without him Alma may not have any wins.

Although, he makes a lot of shots because he takes a lot of shots.

I agree that Alma could be winless without Smith but I am a strong believer of the theory that an MVP should only come from winning teams. Not necessarily the first place team but a team that challenged for the top spot all year long so I think this year that pretty much limits it to Hope and Calvin players.

I have to agree with DCHopeNut on this. Alma is all but certain to finish in last place at 2-12 (the Scots end their season with Hope and Adrian) and that fact alone is, for me, a disqualifying factor in the race for MVP. To be the "V" in MVP you need to show that you made your team significantly better and if your team finishes last I don't think you can demonstrate you accomplished that goal no matter how good of a player you are. Back in 1972 Steve Carlton won 27 games for a bad Phillies club that only won 59 games for the season, getting credit for more than 45% of his team's wins that year--still one of the more amazing stats in Major League baseball history. He was given the MVP award that year and I thought doing so was quite unjustified because his 27 wins didn't really help his team do anything they couldn't have done without him. He did win the Cy Young which is a different type of award and was very much justified.

IMHO Smith is a good but not great player. I admit I only saw him play once this year and in that game he had one of the more unusual double-doubles I've ever seen (15 points and 10 turnovers) but he didn't do anything in that game to make me think he was a special sort of player. Alma lost by 56 that night so how important could he have been to Alma that game? As I've written before, Cramer is the best player on the regular season conference championship team and is my pick for the award.

Thanks.

Caleb's dad was a teacher at my HS back home before they moved.  He cut me my sophomore year when I tried out for the team.  But, he was my older brother's favorite coach.

The odd thing is Marcus was 11-22 coming into MIAA play, and he's just 5-19 since.  I've seen him pass on 3's he would have taken last year.  For a few games at least he was nursing a sore back.

If Isaac Smith ends up finishing as the leading scorer he'll be the 3rd Alma player to do so in the last 4 years.  Anthony Jones was the leading scorer in the 04 and 05 seasons.

I have little doubt that if Mr. Jones had stuck around he'd have led the league 4 straight years, and would have gone down as one of the all-time top scorers in MIAA history.
