...........who starts a basketball game at 9, I mean really ::)

The nice people that knew I had a meeting tonight apparently. This way I'll at least be home in time to catch the second half.

I don't know that "NCAA hopes" is the right term though. I don't follow MSU's chances very well, but in UM's case, they're chances already look like NCAA prayers. Does Amaker have another NIT title in him?

I get the joy of braving the weather tonight to see Michigan and Michigan State tangle in an all-important in-region contest that will be pivotal for each teams NCAA hopes. :P

I'll let you know how it compares to Hope/Calvin. :D ;).........at least I know I can get a hotdog at Breslin. ;D

Drive carefully, dress warmly, and make sure you have everything you'll need for that hot dog:

As usual, any mention of some variety of sausage product is like chumming the waters to find DC.

DC, and several other posters have made some excellent posts regarding splitting D3.  If you start by asking why has D3 grown so fast over the last 10-15 years what do your learn?   It strikes me that most schools value their athletic departments, and the value that they lend to the educational experience to varying degrees.  What most schools are struggling with (regardless of size) is the cost for a student to attend their school, and the allocation of precious resources.  Money given to an athlete in the form of an athletic scholarship is not available to pay staff or fix buildings.  Why did Tri State (along with many others) leave the NAIA to join D3?  Could it be the increasing difficulty in expecting some students to subsidize scholarships to other students on athletic ability?  If you start with the premise many D3 schools elected to be at this level for financial reasons don't you also have to assume the acceptance of the same set of values.  If all the existing D3 schools hold to the same values, and criteria, how does one make any logical split without factoring in size?  It seems to me the smaller schools are really saying they are finding it difficult to compete with the WIAC schools, and with others having significant funding advantages.  Ask yourself why the U of WI (WIAC schools) have dropped from  D2 to NAIA to D3.  Right in the MIAA's back yard we have GVSU which makes no bones about saying they really enjoy being the "big fish" in the D2 pond.  I don't think Williams, and the others mentioned in the NCAA article are concerned about the Calvins, and Hopes of D3, but they may be concerned with the NYU's & WIAC class schools.  The problem may well be the original D3 schools never anticipated how attractive it would become to many larger schools.

Are other boards having such thoughtful discussions?

I don't know.  Did they receive a well rounded liberal arts education?

Probably not...

I was looking around, and I saw the mention of the NYT article, but not many people commented...

I also found it interesting after our days of commentary about Karma, that we in this room average a much higher Karma than most.  ::) (And that is even if we exclude our Calvin Karma leaders: goodknight, oldknight, dark knight and knightslappy  ;) )

NWHF:  I also saw, and read the NYT piece on the NAIA.  It does shine a bit more light on why NCAA is thinking now is the time to consider some changes to D3.  The NAIA seemed quite defensive about their loss of member schools, and their financial condition.  D3 with 600 schools is more than I care to think about.  Hopefully if D3 is split up we can get some fresh thinking on tournaments etc.

We can only hope... Even though they are talking about DIII, I still don't think the NCAA cares too much for us.

I'm hesitant to mention this, especially as I already have as many orifices on my body as I can make practical use of :D, but there is another board devoted to the Future of Division III (click here) which has taken up the topic of the NYT article.  It's usually a pretty good read, with very insightful posters like johnnie_esq and Ralph Turner.  Some of you might find that board interesting, and it's 100% condiment-free.   ;D

I think that this problem is one that is more explicit to football than basketball.  With the small roster sizes of basketball and the fact that the D-III tournament is not yet 64 teams, I dont think that much will change in basketball.  I could more see a III-A and III-AA with respect to football, but I don't think much will change with basketball.

People who are neither prompt nor sincere? :P

GK offered a rather heartless response. ;) Cor meum tibi offero domine prompte et sincere.

Would that it were still in latin.  ??? Thank goodness for "Spera in Deo."

For what it's worth, if I remember correctly, Brand said that in dividing DIII, they would not have a DIII and a DIV, but rather a DIIIA and DIIIAA, or some similar appellation.
