The MIAA tournament pairings as they stand today

#8 Alma at #1 Hope
#7 Olivet at #2 Calvin
#6 Kalamazoo at #3 Tri-State
#5 Albion at #4 Adrian

SATURDAY, FEB. 17
Alma at Adrian, 7:30 p.m.
Calvin at Kalamazoo, 3 p.m.
Hope at Tri-State, 3 p.m.
Albion at Olivet, 7:30 p.m.

Best and worst case scenario's

Alma............best case see edit below, worst case, loss would earn #8 seed

Olivet...........A win over Albion and Kzoo loss gives Olivet the #6 seed, Comets lose any tie-breaker with Kzoo,  worst case Olivet loss or Kzoo win gives Olivet the #7 seed.

Kzoo........... A win or Olivet loss gives Kzoo the #6 seed, worst case ...see edit below

Albion..........Best case, win over Olivet, Adrian loss to Alma, Albion would earn #4 seed and host Adrian.  worst case.......an Adrian win or a loss to Olivet  would mean #5 seed and travel to  Adrian.

Adrian.........Best case, win over Alma or Albion loss gets #4 seed, worst case lose to Alma, Albion beats Olivet gets #5 seed.  Holds the tie-breaker with Albion by defeating Albion twice.

Tri-State......Best case, win over Hope would earn the #2, holds tie-breaker over Calvin with 2 wins over Adrian.  worst case, loss to Hope earns #3 seed regardless of what Calvin does.

Calvin..........Best case, loss by TSU to Hope earns #2 seed, worst case, Tri-State win over Hope earns #3 seed regardless of what Calvin does.

(Calvin cannot affect its seeding, its all dependant on what TSU does.)

Hope............#1 seed, regardless of outcomes.

Most likely scenario is that the current pairings won't change.  Seems like the Hope/TSU game has more potential impact than any other meeting, unless Adrian drops their game to Alma.  But keep an eye on that Olivet/Albion game...........the Comets have a history of giving the Brits fits in Upton Gymnasium.  (I'll be stopping in on the way home from Angola for that one)

EDIT   IF Olivet wins, Alma wins and Kzoo loses, Alma would actually win a tie-breaker with Kalamazoo by virtue of their win over Tri-State.

I must have waited too long to try the link to Mr. Brand talking about his visit to the Rivalry.  I can't seem to find the post.  Could someone either re-post the link, or point me to the page #?

For an interview with Myles Brand concerning the Hope/Calvin game, listen to the following:

http://doubleazone.com/audio/20070212mwm.mp3

It'll make you feel awfully good about what we have here.

There you go Civic Minded. It was back on 591 if this link doesn't work.

Hope's calendar indicates that there is an MIAA tourney game on Thursday night, but the MIAA website says there isn't. I have confidence the MIAA site is correct, but I just wanted to make sure. Anyone know for certain?

The MIAA page shows first round games next Wed. night.   If memory serves correctly that is sop.

OldK;  Central (another RCA school) is not that far from Des Moines.  Last I heard they were D3.  Can not remember the last time Hope had a player from Iowa.  GVW seems to do just find locally.

Historically, the men's tourney has been Wednesday night at the higher seeded host sites and then Fri and Sat. at the highest remaining school's gym. While the women play Tues, Thurs, and Sat.

Many thanks DC!  Don't know how I missed it.

Very nice interview.  Despite emotions, heated as they can get, this Rivalry of ours is a pretty cool thing.  Cheers to Hope and Calvin!

Can't remember, just trying to get this straight. Does the 1/8 winner always play the 5/4 winner, and 7/2 play 6/3, or are the semis the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining and the  two middle seeds playing?

Thanks in advance...

1/8 vs 4/5  and 2/7 vs 3/6......they do not reseed the semi's.

That would be reserved for a women's game, the women do not gather at one site for the semi-finals, they play home games.

Central College is D3 but it's about an hour's drive from Des Moines. I don't really consider that to be in the Des Moines area.

Simpson College is in Indianola, closer than Pella and probably could be considered Des Moines area. At least Radar always thought so when we went to the "big city" together. ;)

If you take "emotion" out, heated as it may get, do you even have a rivalry left?  do you even have a game?

I think the point is that it is like a sibling rivalry: occasionally overheated, strong emotions involved, but in the end respectful and supportive. So, like siblings, even if you take some of the heat out, there is still mutual respect, and some pride at stake. Nothing like UM/OSU, for example, which has evolved into something really ugly.

At some levels, true, but there are also numerous joint ventures for charity - this year, for example, a UM frat and an OSU frat combined on a relay run from AA to Columbus, and for years there has been a spirited competition to see which campus could win the blood drive.

"spirited"----they'd get more blood if they allowed each other to do the deed.......so to speak. ;)

Having been in a D1 "gymnasium" this week sporting a nice maize sweatshirt with an apparent offensive word on it..........the whole experience of a D1 atmosphere left me a bit nauseous.  Its simply amazing how many dumb things people say about each other and to people they've never met.

........or maybe that was the hotdogs that made me nauseous.....or maybe it was the offensive offenses. ???

Gets pretty quiet in here when Calvin loses.  ;) :D

Maybe they didn't have the right condiments. :)

You'd be a fool to show up in Columbus driving a car with Michigan plates and Michigan bumper stickers on it, and wearing maize and blue in the horseshoe. The Hope/Calvin rivalry is nothing like that. What goes on in Columbus on game day is a travesty. It's a little like the reaction you have watching what I regard to be a SUPERB TV show, "Friday Night Lights;" namely, some of these people need to get a life. Sports may be good training for life, but they're not life. DIII schools seem to have remembered that. DI schools - not so much.
