At some levels, true, but there are also numerous joint ventures for charity - this year, for example, a UM frat and an OSU frat combined on a relay run from AA to Columbus, and for years there has been a spirited competition to see which campus could win the blood drive.

"spirited"----they'd get more blood if they allowed each other to do the deed.......so to speak. ;)

Having been in a D1 "gymnasium" this week sporting a nice maize sweatshirt with an apparent offensive word on it..........the whole experience of a D1 atmosphere left me a bit nauseous.  Its simply amazing how many dumb things people say about each other and to people they've never met.

........or maybe that was the hotdogs that made me nauseous.....or maybe it was the offensive offenses. ???

Gets pretty quiet in here when Calvin loses.  ;) :D

Maybe they didn't have the right condiments. :)

You'd be a fool to show up in Columbus driving a car with Michigan plates and Michigan bumper stickers on it, and wearing maize and blue in the horseshoe. The Hope/Calvin rivalry is nothing like that. What goes on in Columbus on game day is a travesty. It's a little like the reaction you have watching what I regard to be a SUPERB TV show, "Friday Night Lights;" namely, some of these people need to get a life. Sports may be good training for life, but they're not life. DIII schools seem to have remembered that. DI schools - not so much.

Yes, alas, that is one of the 'ugly levels'!  (In fairness, Ann Arbor is only slightly less hostile for OSU partisans.)  In both locations it is only a minority of 'fans' who behave that way (most are quite courteous and welcoming), but it is potentially quite dangerous.

There's a lot to be said for the higher accountability level in terms of expected student and fan behavior at D3 sporting events. In a smaller crowd, on a smaller campus, in a smaller town, it's harder to be a jerk and still maintain your anonymity the way that you can at a D1 megaschool sporting event.

Get to travel to icy Holland today but will be kept from updates on the wonderful board this weekend. GO HOPE!
(I also just wanted to post at 5am because really, who does that? ???, haha, didn't realize Sager had really just posted at 5am when I wrote that the first time:))

We all just thought it appropriate to mimic the actions of Hope fans after the events of Wednesday, February 7 when Myles Brand brought an eerie silence to Holland. ;)

I just raised that same point on the NCAC board.  IMO the QOWI gap is not nearly large enough to outweigh 2 or 3 more in-region losses.

IMO, 0.4 is a gigantic gap in QOWI and I would also remind you that not only does JCU have two more regional losses, it has three more regional wins.

Don't get caught fixating on the loss column. It's not the only component of a regional ranking.

Having just come from the NCAC board when I posted that, I was just thinking in terms of Woo and Witt (though I realize that wasn't very polite here on my 'home' Michigan board!) - they each have 15 in-region wins, just like JCU.

I suppose I probably discount QOWI more than I should because of its obvious defects.  Is the change to including opponent's opponents records starting next year?

Mr. Yipsi, I agree with you. I guess I have a better idea now of why JCU jumped but I just don't buy into the QoWI as that reliable of a measure of a team. I certainly don't see how JCU jumps 4 spots this past week.

I'm guessing this will all change after this game from last night

I have had that same experience in a maize jersey, and that was in a year where MSU was actually good and beating UM was a foregone conclusion. Fortunately I was sitting in a quiet section, but I got to interact with the student section during intermission. I have never otherwise had an issue with the "stage fright," but has anyone ever been heckled while at a urinal? That was certainly a new experience. Fortunately most of the Izzone was just giving good natured mocking because the game was un-interesting, though they have weird ideas for insults. They assumed I might go to UM and were saying "ah, you're probably one of them smart guys, got one of those smart majors? Got a 3.7, 3.8 or something?" Ooh, um... burn?

No road trip to Angola this weekend.  I've never been to Tri-State and was HOPEing to make the trip this time, but work calleth me to be at an all-day retreat. So for those of you who are making the trip to the game, please make sure you drive back home like SAC so that you can get the details of the game on the website - because they are really appreciated by those who can't attend the game. Safe travels everyone!

<insert tongue in cheek and read on>

Proof once again that the NCAA is all about athletics and not about academics, at least for those who made this decision.    :P

You don't have to be a geography or math major to know that it's not possible to get from one to the other in under 200 miles.

Are they counting on the ferry running all year - must be due to global warming?

Or maybe the melting polar ice cap will actually cause the lake to freeze over completely, and we can just drive across.

No, I know what it is, they know that we're the Flying Dutchmen, and therefore assume we can either

      a) fly straight across or
      b) build a dyke and reclaim enough land to drive through.

Although if that's the case, I'm sure that Cavin should also be within 200 miles, as I'm sure Moses was a Calvin fan, and will part the seas for them.

This is so unbelievably stupid...........unbelievable, stupid, moronic, ignorant, assinine and just plain wrong.

I don't know, I don't think they could get the team bus on the SS Magic Kingdom

I know this was discussed... maybe last year, or the year before, but while the NCAA magically uses Microsoft Streets and Trips, for us who don't have access (sort of... see note *), online maps will have to suffice.

All "shortest" (excluding ferry rides, which some wanted us to take):

Yahoo- 210.4
Expedia- 211 miles
Google- 217
Map Nation- 217.1
Rand McNally- 218
Mapquest- 220.97
Yellowpages.com- 221.68

and.. Microsoft Live Search ( * using the same software that Maps and Trips uses)- 211.1 Miles

8 Different distances including Microsoft's averaging 215.9 miles.

The shortest one is is at least 10.5 miles longer than a max of 199.9 miles. The average is 16 miles longer, and Microsoft's own is at least 11.2 miles longer.

Even if there was a few mile discrepancy, and the addresses of the two locations were not exactly the same one's used by the NCAA, I'm not sure how there is such a big difference.   ??? ??? ???
