Veldhouse 0-7 shooting 3's?????  what's going on with that?

The team shooting 35.9%. Guess that's why it's a two-point game.

"I'm about as angry as I've been after a game, and not with my team"

Refs let it go, it got worse and worse.

It was scary, frustrating, amazing that it didn't end in a fist fight.

If we had played this game another time, there would have been 50 fouls.

Three times early on when guys shot it they got knocked to the floor, and after that we were wincing, turning away, just not shooting it as well.

Really ugly basketball down in Kalamazoo this afternoon, and another terrible day of shooting for most of the Knights.
The officiating was hands-down the worst I've seen this season, and it went both ways.  But this crew must have been the one that Hope-Alma saw the other night.

Not Calvin's best game ever.   Kalamazoo came out very aggressively, and it made sense for them to take advantage of what was being allowed.  I was sure KVS was going to do a "smokin Joe" routine a couple of times.
Well on the the conference tournament.   :)

Ugh, I hate missing games.  I think I can safely say this is as nervous as I've been about an Alma game.

The onus is on them to justify the change, and they haven't done that so far as I have seen. It (further) undermines its credibility as a rule-making institution.

Well, in all honesty, I'm not entirely sure they are required to justify it to you personally. I'm sure if the institutions inquired they might get a more specific reason than we did. I think the reason we got was more than they are required to give to you guys.

Then why do the guards keep hoisting up shots?  The 3 guards combined for 9-35 today.
From 3 pt range 4-19. (Griffin 4-9)  Caleb Veldhouse and Derek Griffin combined for an 18-59 effort against Albion and Kalamazoo this week.  I bet there were at least 8 times today that Calvin brings the ball up and there is either zero or 1 pass before a shot is taken.    Our offense this year is poor.  The middle was open the whole day.  Meckes, Snoeyink and DeVries combined for 34 points today.  If we would have been more patient and worked at it a liittle harder they could have had 50.

If we use time estimates rather than distance estimates, would we be using Civic-Minded as the imagined driver, or someone else? Because it seems like that would make a difference. ;)

LOL!  Ah...my legend grows... ;)

But to support said legend, the trip home from Angola went by pretty fast (no pun intended).  I'm sure FDF will have some details for you soon, since Sac left Angola to catch the Albion game...

I, on the other hand, need to get to work!

Alma and Adrian are in overtime

UPDATE - I assume this game is over and Adrian won.  The stats board has been stuck on 7 seconds left with the score Adrian 86 Alma 81 for 10 minutes

Thoughts from the Hoosier state (Hope 78  TSU 59)

- The Tri-State gym is really just a miniature verions of KnollCrest - but with really poor lighting.  I think it was actually dimmer in there than the Olivet gym.

- The two teams combined went 0-20 from 3 in the first half.  Hope went 5-9 in the second to finish the game at 5-18.  TSU went 5-20 in the second, and finished the game at 5-31.  Not exactly stellar shooting.

- Good defensive effort by Hope.  Held TSU to 16 first half points, and they held Benford to 8, Brookins to 10 for the game.

- Balanced scoring from the Hope team - Cramer lead with 19 on 8-11 including 2-4 from 3, Reimink and Klein had 14, Partridge 10.  Starting 5 scored 46, second 5, 32.

Unsung heroes

- Marcus Vanderheide 4pts, 8 rbs, 6 ast, 2 stls in 23 minutes
- Scott Richardson 4pts, 9 rbs, 4 ast, 2 stls in 22 minutes
- Tyler Wolfe struggled with his shooting, but pulled down 7 boards in 11 minutes.

- Most exciting thing to see as Hope fan today was the starting 5 come in with the score 18-14, and go on a 12-0 run.  Seems like the second 5 has been the ones doing that lately, but it was good to see from the starters.

Just got back from a double dip in Kzoo. First the Calvin vs Kalamazoo wrestling match after which I took the opportunity to watch the 2nd half and overtime of Western Michigan University's exciting win over Homer Drew and his Valpo quintet (for free, mind you). The Knights' 5 point win was very uneven, partly due to their own inability to adjust to the intensity along with the clutch and grab tactics employed by the Hornets, and partly due to a miserable shooting afternoon from outside of 5 feet by every player on the roster except for Griffen. Calvin shot 4-23 from the arc (all made by Griffen) and the team is now 13-54 with the 3 ball in the last two games. And it's not like their shots were just slightly off; most of the misses weren't even close. Must be that Rolla Dome atmosphere. KVS was beside himself the first several minutes as K repeatedly set illegal screens to free up shooters on the offensive side while the refs let everything go on the defensive end. Despite the physical nature of play not one foul was called on K until Kellogg was whistled at the 12:52 mark. By then a pattern had been set and Kalamazoo eventually wound sending Calvin to the line 29 times (vs. 14 for K) and that was largely the difference in the game. Kalamazoo also made 11 more turnovers than did the Knights to hurt their chances at pulling off an upset. In the end Meckes saved Calvin's bacon by grabbing all the key rebounds, scoring 5 straight points at about the 3 minute mark to give Calvin the lead they never relinquished, and making big defensive plays when the Hornets had the ball.

If goodknight thinks the reffing at Anderson was bad he should have joined me for the short jaunt over to Western to see how MAC refs stack up. With about 3 minutes left in regulation and WMU trying to cut into a 4 point lead David Kool made a nice baseline move and basket only to have it waved off by an official who bought the defender's flop and whistled Kool for an offensive foul. On the ensuing Valpo possession another official called Western's Michael Redell for a defensive foul while he was pressuring the ball near midcourt with the shot clock running down. Two phantom fouls in row that went against the Broncos and the fans were ready to strangle the officiating crew. But if any of you ever thought David Kool would never make it at the D1 level you had better think again. Down the stretch he made all the big plays, took all the big shots, grabbed some big rebounds and made a couple of huge steals. It's clear even his teammates look to this freshman for leadership. I saw Mr. Basketball play several times in high school and the thing that always impressed me about him even more than his physcal tools was his court smarts. In high school he was always way ahead of other players when it came to basketball IQ. That's still true today even at the college level. He's the overwhelming favorite to be MAC freshman of the year. Oh, would he look good dressed in Maroon and Gold. :( :'(
