And now for a comment related to MIAA officiating.
Its unfortunate that such a good league is regularly brought down by bad officiating. I know it happens everywhere but it seems to be worse in the MIAA. And when both teams fans agree that the officiating is bad you know you have a problem (not the case with K and Calvin but that has been the case earlier in the season).

At least the officiating gets better in NCAA tournament play, you know, by about, oh,  the second round...

SAC (or others):  Could you please point me to a url where I can find Calvin's record for 1997-1999?  I nosed around Calvin's site and the MIAA site, but could not find it.  I am specifically interested in their record against Ferris State those years.  Thanks in advance.

I agree, I thought the officiating was excellent, especially the focus on flying elbows.  :P

So I'm crunching the conference stats and applying my special formula to calculate who deserves recognition in the MIAA fan poll (of course I haven't figured out where to put "the intangibles" into the calculations).

Anyway, I did find some interesting stats about the stats:

- There are 49 different players listed in the various categories.

- On average, each player is listed in 4 categories (Isaac Smith is in all 13 categories)

The class breakdown of ranked players is like this:

18.4% Freshmen
22.5% Sophomores
30.6% Juniors
28.5% Seniors

The school breakdown of ranked players is like this:

6  Adrian
7  Albion
6  Alma
6  Calvin
9  Hope
4  Kalamazoo
5  Olivet
6  Tri-State

Mike Smith is the new supervisor of officials, no?  It will be interesting to see if he makes any changes after observing the games from the stands.  I've seen him at a couple games this year.  He always seemed to do a decent job on the court.

Perhaps my alms for the lenten season will be no more complaining about the referees (40 days, not too bad right?)    Probably should've been a new year's resolution.....

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Maybe you can find a loophole as to whether lent starts with Wednesday's tournament games, or not until Thursday morning so would apply only to the weekend games. Hold off getting your ashes until after the game and you may be safe. Of course, it might be difficult to find an authorized religious authority who is willing to perform the ceremony at 10 at night, but you never know. You could always travel to Kenosha to get your ashes and take advantage of the time difference. I believe that is considered in-region for religious purposes.

So my question is, did they actually change the rule to start using ferry's, or are they now considering the backroads & city streets through Chicago?  IF it's the latter, then why was this not in region last year - it's not like those streets just popped up in the last 12 months.

Neither; they changed the program used to determine distance.  This year it's mappoint; last year IIRC it was Streets & Trips.

While continuing to beat this long dead horse... Mappoint (www.mappoint.msn.com) is the Microsoft live maps I referred to in my other post. Which, as I pointed out, uses the same software (from the Microsoft site) that Streets and Trips uses.

So using this free software and manipulating it to not allow a ferry trip ("shortest drive" from Hope to Carthage takes you on the ferry). I went from Hope College (a legal search term) to Lakeview, MI (500) yards off the freeway, and then on to Carthage College. I did this all using the "shortest distance" (which indeed does take you all through Robin Hood's barn in Chicago), coming up with 203.6 miles.

Still wondering how the NCAA travel office does it...  ??? ::) ???

I'm hoping to find out, as I have a request in to the "travel office" to get some turn by turn directions from Hope to Carthage... That should be enlightening!  :D

Just got an e-mail from Kathy at the NCAA Travel Office and her "official" directions come out to 210.9 miles. Interestingly enough she sent me directions using the "shortest time" search... How nice of her! I let her know I was looking for the shortest distance (not using the ferry)... I'll let you all know how that turns out!  ;) ;D

Our local NAIA friends had an interesting finish to their WHAC season.  Despite Aquinas beating Cornerstone twice during the conference season, Cornerstone ending up on top of the conference.  Aquinas dropped 2 of their last 3 games and an earlier overtime game to tally 3 conference losses to Cornerstone's 2.

Pretty rare occurrance when the 2nd place team beats the champion twice in one season.

Aquinas was ranked in the high teens, Cornerstone was just outside the top 25, that will probably reverse this week.  Like the MIAA they may end up with a 4th grudgematch between Cornerstone and Aquinas in the WHAC tournament Championship.  Cornerstone won the first of 3 previous meetings in the Select Bank Tournament Consolation game.

Let's hope it's a rare (that is to say, non) occurrence in the MIAA also.

I was going through the MIAA boxscores today and decided to count officials appearances.  I was pretty floored to find out that in the games that listed officials, there have been 38 different officials for conference games.  Considering there are only 12 in use on any given MIAA game day, I think thats a lot.

Note to Alma:  Please list the officials present on the boxscore, there's a space for it and everyone else seems to fill it out reasonably well.  You mess up quality research project such as this one by not filling out the form completely. :P

Here are the most frequently used officials and for kicks the average number of fouls called in their games:

Creek...............7----34.0
Bray.................6----32.0
Kelser..............6----41.2
Buck.................6----33.8
Massa..............6----30.1
Huber..............6----35.6
Vanderstoep...5----39.8
Gilbert.............5----33.6
Favors.............5----29.4
Plain................5----35.8

It should be noted there were 9 MIAA games that did not list any official and I think 3 that only listed 1 or 2 of the 3 officials.  So this represents roughly 80% of the available MIAA games.

Here are the highest average fouls called..........to be fair, a couple of these guys only did 2 or 3 games.

McDermott.......43
Kelser..............41.2
Vanderstoep...39.8
Keeling............39.6
Reece..............39.5
Riley................39

Our "Hack-a-thon" award of the year goes to the crew of Pennington, Miller and Kelser who called a whopping 50 fouls in the Hope at Olivet game.

What I found particularly interesting doing this list was the names that did not appear on this list frequently,  some of the refs I consider to be the better refs in the league.............Schipper, Whitfield, Palmer, Kooiker, Ditsworth, Conlin and Joppe.

Out of curiosity I did a little surfing around the GLIAC and sure enough a number of our better officials are doing GLIAC games, good for them individualy, bad for the MIAA.  I'm really quite thrown by the total number of officials doing MIAA games.

..........and everyone's favorite, Geerlings appears just twice.

I'll certainly be watching to see who gets assigned to the MIAA tournament games Wednesday.

Any chance VanderStoep would get to officiate a Hope/Calvin rematch? ;)

Hope is up to 8th in the latest poll. I know the poll doesn't matter much, but I have to believe so long as not to many first-place teams lose in their conference tourneys, Hope has to be nearly a lock for a pool C if they make it to the finals, regardless of whether they win or lose there.
