Well I'm sure we don't all agree on who the best and worst refs are............other than the Alma afair, I really hadn't noticed this year.  I'm just surprised at the sure volumne of refs we've had.  I bet I haven't seen the same ref more than twice in MIAA play.

I'm certainly no expert in the area, but I definately feel more comfortable when I see 3 refs I've recognized before.

I went back and checked..........last year there were 1911 fouls called in MIAA play, this year 1950..........not even an increase of 1 per game.

As far as a team breakdown for foul "advantage" in this past season

Adrian whistled for 23 more fouls than opponents
Albion.....................5 more fouls
Alma.......................40 more
Calvin.....................58 fewer
Hope......................17 fewer
Kzoo.......................21 more
Olivet......................26 more
Tri-State..................52 fewer

For a jump shooting team, that Tri-State number astounds me.

sac

ziggy, I think tri-state's foul difference probably comes from them not being a very physical team on defense, at least to my eyes.  They don't seem to challenge the ball as much as other teams.  They only had 209 fouls called against them, the other 7 averaged  around 250 fouls.

Calvin only had 213 fouls called on them,  also a team who's defense has been called into question at times this season.

I tend to agree with your analysis of the foul call differential Sac.  Hard to quantify some portions of the game, but it just seemed all year that Calvin's players were noticeably less aggressive appearing than were opponents.   I know that is a subjective  opinion, and I cite last Sat's game  with Kalamazoo as primary example.  K players appeared more aggressive, and attacking (not dirty) than Calvin players.   Also over the year Calvin's players seemed to get less ticky tack (reach in etc) type calls.   A big part of the analysis might just come down to end of game situations.  Hope, Calvin, and Tri State avoided "have to foul",  and stop the clock scenarios.  A furher reason might be the top 3 teams in the conference just simply had better athletes, and were better schooled in avoiding fouls.

all good points, realist.

Well I've received 18 ballots now, which is pretty close to average.  I wouldn't mind a few more.  I'm off to Breslin for UW/MSU so you have untill around 10pm if you want to slide in at the last minute.  I'll try to get the results posted tonight.

sac - you lucky dog you.  Just got back from the Hope/TSU womens game - I won't post the score as that belongs elsewhere  ;) - and they kept giving us updates on MSU/W, which drew some of the biggest noise all night.

Sac had a ticket to the Breslin tonight. I freely admit to a violation of the Tenth Commandment.

Had myself a ticket to last weeks MSU vs. U of M game, but I would have much rather had a ticket to the game tonight.

sac

It was wicked good. ;)  I'll freely admit that game moves into my all-time top 5  D1 games I've seen in person.

I saw a bunch of games in the mid 80's to early 90's that were pretty sweet with tons of talent.  No particular order....

Kansas-Kansas St, NCAA tourny with Danny Manning, Mitch Richmond

Michigan-Indiana--IU was #1 or #2, UM hit 16 straight shots, Bobby called it "divine intervention"

Michigan-Illinois--only a couple years ago, neither team led by more than 4, I think it was the beginning of the Illinois run of good teams.

Michigan-Indiana--in the Fab 5 era but under NCAA guidlines I'm not allowed to count that game. ;D

Michigan-Purdue--Michigan upset a great Purdue team, I think it was the same year as KU/KSU

...and tonight's fits somewhere in there.

Seeing Neitzel go off for 11 straight points was worth it alone, two of the best "shooters" rolls you'll ever see.

SAC -

I watched most of the game on TV, and whew!, it looked like an amazing game. I could only imagine what it was like being there, since it was rockin' on TV.  I kept looking for you, but no luck.  I thought I'd  might see you because I wondered if you might just be bold enough to wear your Maize n' Blue. Therefore the students from the Izzone would be passing you from your seat to, how do they say it, Out the door!  But you must have behaved yourself! Here's HOPEing that the remaining games that you see later this week are also favorable!

sac

I'm going to go out on a limb and say.......our MIAA players will be hardpressed to impress me with anything they do this week after seeing Mr. Neitzel.  :D

calculating the posters poll at the moment, should be released to the public in mere moments.

What amazed me is how off-balance he was on some of those shots. Seemed to have the shooter's bounce going for him tonight too.

The world breathlessly awaits the results...
