BTW, I've provided running commentary about how bad we think the NCAA is with Jonathan Williams, NCAA Director
of Championships.  He can be reached by e-mail at jawilliams@ncaa.org or by phone at 317/917-6222 just in case you want to give him a piece of your mind...

The travel office responded to me the other day on an update on the Hope/Carthage thing...

The travel department doesn't really make the determination of what is
considered in or out of region.  We merely determine the mileage program
that we use.  For the 2005-06 year, the NCAA used Microsoft Streets and
Trips.  However, for 2006-07, we changed to an online program, Microsoft
MapPoint, that all institutions can access.  During this transition it
was discovered that not all mileage calculations were the same between
the two programs and that this could potentially affect the in-region
determination.

The Division III Championships committee decided that if the different
systems yielded different results, the NCAA staff liaisons would look at
the situation and determine how the game would be classified.  I sent
your e-mail to our staff liaison yesterday afternoon, and they have
determined that the game would be considered in-region, based on it
having been in-region in previous years, using Microsoft Streets and
Trips.

Only one year (last year) as far as I can tell. Interesting... Rather than using their new software as the rule of thumb, the liaisons determined that because they set president in '05-'06... they couldn't make a change??? Based on today's Pool C/B issues... I guess they can change their minds!!!

Oh yeah, I was at that Saturday afternoon game.  A very somber and empty Knollcrest Fieldhouse.  About as many fans in theat gym as there are Cosmos with a clean police record!

How many of those do you know? Cosmos that is?

More than I care to.

Obviously haven't met the right ones... Plenty (almost all I know) with "clean records", as long as traffic tickets don't count!  ;)

WHAT ?   Hope v Carthage has never been in-region and if it was it shouldn't have been.

That's what I thought. I didn't think Hope Carthage was in region last year! So the precedent is the opposite of their decision? Oh my, even the Supreme Court couldn't pull that off!

Proving once again that Hope is so incredibly awesome and envy-worthy that Calvin must keep up in every regard (except dancing, right?).   ;D 8) :o

CM- if I don't make it to the game tonight, it's because the little guys in white coats have dragged me off to a rubber room, where for the rest of my days I'll keep repeating, "just take the ferry, the lake doesn't freeze..."

Exactly.  How many of us could pull off a blunder like this and remain employed?  And if this were the only stupid thing they'd done, well then okay.  But c'mon, we all know better.  There are lots of competent people in the world -- maybe the NCAA should check monster.com.   ;)

Aren't you over reacting a bit?

Please note -- winky faces generally mean a tongue-in-cheek approach to the subject matter.  My apologies if I failed to include enough of them.  But even then, given the number of players, coaches, parents, friends, etc. who's next few weeks will be determined by what the committe does, doesn't it rile you just a little bit?

Ya know all this NCAA tournament stuff is just a beaurocratic way of trying to cut costs.   Just like watching your own employer spend $1 million to save 3 grand..........its just infuriating.  (True story by the way)  Cut costs at all costs, no matter how much chaos it creates.

Kind of like a 25 Billion dollar company removing the free tea packets from the lunchroom..........also true.

Free coffee anyone...........nope that'll be 10 cents. ::)

Why wouldn't the NCAA just use mapquest.com? I imagine it is the most commonly used mapping software in use by individuals throughout the country and it is free online!!!

The fact that they use any software to judge this is in some ways ridiculous.  Software is an ever changing entity, with new versions, bug fixes, service packs, and database updates, all possibly changing the final results.

The results from last year on this site have Hope/Carthage as in-region...
