The travel department doesn't really make the determination of what is
considered in or out of region.  We merely determine the mileage program
that we use.  For the 2005-06 year, the NCAA used Microsoft Streets and
Trips.  However, for 2006-07, we changed to an online program, Microsoft
MapPoint, that all institutions can access.  During this transition it
was discovered that not all mileage calculations were the same between
the two programs and that this could potentially affect the in-region
determination.

The Division III Championships committee decided that if the different
systems yielded different results, the NCAA staff liaisons would look at
the situation and determine how the game would be classified.  I sent
your e-mail to our staff liaison yesterday afternoon, and they have
determined that the game would be considered in-region, based on it
having been in-region in previous years, using Microsoft Streets and
Trips.
...

This memorandum was circulated last fall to answer the question raised by coaches and AD's.  Certain opponents had been contracted based on the Streets and Trips in-region definition prior to the change, and so the administrative ruling was given to permit in-region games under the accepted definition when the contract was made to remain such.

What was used in the '04/'05 season to make the determination? Hope/Carthage was not considered in-region then!

I still have not seen a proven turn by turn itinerary by Streets and Trips. And the NCAA still fails to address the "spirit of the rule" for the time it would take to travel said 200 miles...

And when the contract is up for the Hope/Calvin/Wheaton/Carthage games, will this game then cease to be "in-region"?

"The final word from the NCAA's travel department...Hope to Carthage (and vice versa) is 199 miles."

Hope/Carthage is a regional game.

If they knew that Hope to Carthage was not <200 miles(which they surely knew), why did they feel the need to lie?  Frankly, I think, "It was in region in the past so it will continue to be in region" would have gone over way better than saying it was 199 miles...

This will be a good thing in the long run Hope.  If you take both Carthage and Hope's recent men's BBall history, Hope should win at least 3/4.

And now because i deserve it...Smite me if you want.  My karma is too high anyways.....

About as many fans in theat gym as there are Cosmos with a clean police record!

How many of those do you know? Cosmos that is?

More than I care to.

LOL and +k to wizardry on the Cosmo observation. As the brother of a Cosmo alumni, I can confirm that he did not escape his 4 years with a clean slate, and apparently it was quite a roll-call to list the full file for the group.

Calvin student sentate having a meeting in about an hour about the Calvin mascot for next year.  No joke.

That's because Sir Galahad is threatening a class action lawsuit against Calvin on behalf of the entire Round Table for the hostile and abusive environment created by the Knight nickname. The student senate got wind of it and is considering an on-campus sympathy march. They're also debating alternate nicknames and have invited Myles Brand to be the keynote speaker. Rumor has it that President Byker has retained bulldogalum and DCHopeNut to co-counsel Calvin's defense if the NCAA threatens sanctions. ;)

That contract was extended for four more years on the men's side.  So we have 5 more years of the CCIW/MIAA Challenge...........hopefully by the time they discuss a new contract we have a new system.

Maybe someone could start a new thread for the Hope/Carthage In-Region/Out-Region conversation.  Kind of like they did with the game results last night.  Just a thought.

Can't remember who posted about Calvin not moving the ball much, but I thought they did a good job moving the ball last night.  A lot of nice assists and good movement.  Maybe I've missed too many games, but I thought it was one of their best nights in that regard.

Oh, I understand your pain. My sophomore year at Hope the MIAA championship game was played at Albion on a Saturday night. Just the week before one of my good friends comes up to me and another male friend and she asks one of us to go to her Volleyball formal dance with her the night of the championship. Before a hummingbird could have flapped its wings once my friend said "NO." And so I was stuck missing the championship game (and GVW's 500th victory) to attend some silly volleyball dance because I was being the good friend. I went to Albion the night before to watch an epic battle that I believe had Hope beating Calvin 89-88 in OT. Don Overbeek and Jeremy Veenstra were both seniors that year and just battled the entire game. It was a classic game. The next night my friend returned for the championship game in which Hope came back from a double digit second half deficit to win after Albion's President apologized for his students poor behavior the night before directed at Hope fans leaving the game (I have had a particular disdain towards Albion since that night.) I kept going to the car at the dance to check the score but it wasn't the same. :'(

Why must we dwell on such awful memories of the 2004 tourney. Flew in from DC for those games and then Hope lost on Friday night. Ruined my whole week. >:(

You've had some tough MIAA tournament weeks.  The Calvin posters would probably be willing to take up a collection to fly you in for this weekend.  We like the kind of luck you bring the Dutchmen.  ;)

Haha, well the third time is always a charm :)

We're not willing to take the chance. You're the Hoyas problem now. ;)

WHAT ?   Hope v Carthage has never been in-region and if it was it shouldn't have been.

That's what I thought. I didn't think Hope Carthage was in region last year! So the precedent is the opposite of their decision? Oh my, even the Supreme Court couldn't pull that off!

Well, if Earl Warren was still around, maybe.

This is insane. What was previously considered out of region is now considered in region because in the past we considered it out of region and we do now whatever we did in the past, because 19 actually equals 18 and blah blah blah blah blah. I'm beginning to wonder whatever colossal boondoggles these muttonheads have been in charge of. We're friends with Myles Brand now! Let's get him to do something.

Okay, not sure why one would lose Karma over this post, but at the risk of losing more, here goes.  It seems ironic that we would want to "keep the board clear" and  thus not post our team updates of the games, and yet we can make literally dozens of posts about the doggone mileage from Hope to Carthage.  Go figure!

Still learning how to the cut and past thing.  Guess I didn't master that in Kindergarden.

yeah, you shouldn't lose karma for that.

Updates just tend to muddy up the board, legitimate conversation is different even if you get tired of it.

Its been "deceased equined" so there shouldn't be much more.  Just part of the annual bash the NCAA D3 tournament selection process........lots of good ammo for us this year. :)
