I quickly went through the play by play of the first half against Olivet.  I counted 15 possessions for Calvin of 10 seconds or less.  They scored on 5 of those.  A couple of those five were layups off turnovers. We had 10 possessions where we shot the ball in 10 seconds or less where we didn't score.  There was a sequence at around the 6 minute mark where we got 3-4 offensive rebounds and we took 2 3 point shots within 5- 8 seconds.  Olivet was terrible defensively and we were helping them out by taking quick shots.

You talk about ball movement.  We had 16 assists for the game.  The starting 3 guards combined for 4 of those assists.  Veldhouse and Griffin were a combined 5-15 from the floor.  I don't like the way we play offense.  I don't think we are very smart at times.  I like the Bobby Knight rule of at least 4 passes before a shot.

Josh Meckes was 1- 2 on 3 pointers Wed. night.  He was 6-21 in the league.  He is not a good 3 point shooter.  KVS described him as the fifth option on the floor after the Hope loss.  Mantel is 4-26 on 3's.  Why is he shooting a 3?  These guys need to get inside and get the ball where they are effective.  Just because you're open from the 3 point line doesnt mean it is a good shot.  You may be open because the defense want you to shoot that shot.

We almost lost at Hope because we wern't very smart at times on offense in the second half.  You have to credit Hope's defense for some of that.  But we also have think better and move the ball.

Bring that up in the huddle tonight.

I don't think my voice from the cheap seats would be listened to.

EDIT:  I modified it, hope you're pleased.

Probably not even from the expensive cushy ones. ;) Don't worry though--not my voice either. :o

I just can't justify the expense of an arena hotdog. Maybe I'll hang around the Dew Crew - the concession staff was passing them out for free at the end of Wednesday's game.

I believe the Hope/Adrian matchup will be a better one than the Calvin/Tri-state. Hope is playing better than the last meeting with Adrian, but more than one poster has referred to the tournament history of these two teams. It sounds like Benford isn't at 100% and Tri-state just won't compete without him. Not sure what to make of Calvin at this point. I have no doubt but that they'll be firing on all cylinders if they meet Hope on Saturday. I'll be surprised if they would get off to an 18-4 start though.

Good afternoon planned: work. Froelichstunde at Via Maria's. Doubleheader game time. I'm all a-twitter for this weekend.

By the way, I was told at the DeVos ticket office that Calvin has turned back a portion of their tickets for Saturday's games, claiming that there is no way they would use them all (1500). Season ticket holders can buy their tickets at the conclusion of tonight's game, all others at noon tomorrow (faculty/staff/students getting no jump on the crowd :(). I was told there should be no problem getting tickets for tomorrow night's game, even up to game time. I'm skeptical, but there it is.

I have a witness who can testify that he switched it up and had a Big Pig last night (well, and a hot dog).  :)  Will strongly recommend grilled chicken (or something else relatively healthy) tonight!

HC -- A DeVos hot dog is a modest $2.  Go for it!  :)

Two great days of basketball coming!

I expect Calvin should win relatively easily tonight unless Benford is magically healed by tip. Something in the low double digits for Calvin's margin of victory.

I also worry about Hope-Adrian based on tourney history alone. I do expect Hope to win though and believe that this is not a team that will take any game lightly unlike some past years.

GO HOPE!

No - go figure! And no advantages on Saturday's tickets either. I have a very hard life. ;) :D

What happened to Benford?  Isn't he their leading scorer?

sac

Benford was wearing some sort of splint/wrist protection on his left wrist last week vs. Hope.

He shot the ball horribly and I don't think took a shot in the second half.  He's scored 7 and 8 points in their last 2 games after averaging 20+ all season.  Also shot under 25%.

Basically without Benford and Brookins getting hot, TSU doesn't have much chance tonight.

sac

Checked the NCAA stats for 3pt shooting percentage this week

1 Augustana (Ill.) ................43.5
2 Hope ...............................43.2
3 Wis.-Stevens Point ..........42.7
4 Occidental .......................42.6
5 Amherst ...........................41.9
6 St. Thomas (Minn.) ...........41.8
7 Wooster ..........................41.6
8 Elmhurst..........................41.3
9 Whitworth .......................40.9

Interesting all 9 teams are ranked in the D3hoops.com poll.

Also amazing that they rounded up. ;) ;D

Depends on which Calvin team comes to play, I think.  If it's the one that played at Kalamazoo, I think it could be an exciting (as in close) game.  Less than 4 hours until we find out!! :)
