Greek Tragedy

If St. Thomas wins, they have a shot of hosting too.  They had a bye in the first round, which I would assume they had a higher seeding as well.

Not sure about the other posters, but I did not intend in any way to diminish what Welton has accomplished so far in his career.  He is a very good player, and deserves all the praise he has gotten.  Last night was not one of his better performances according to GS, and there is no disagreement about that.   Being biased some of us Calvin fans would like to think that Calvin's game plan, and Calvin's players made the results what they were.  It is not unreasonable to ask if his numbers would be the same if he played in the WIAC, or the CCIW or even the MIAA for a full season.   :)

It is starting to look like the MIAA will have atleast one team in the second round.   Great game Hope.  Does this mean the MIAA wasn't quite as bad as we thught it was all year? :)

Conference reputations are pretty much fixed in December. If some teams in a conference take longer to get their act together, the conference still has a bad external record.

I don't think we really have very much information about the relative strength of some conferences until a few NCAA tourney games have been played.

I don't agree, because only the topmost teams from any conference get into the tourney; sometimes it's only one team that gets in. On the other hand, non-conference play reflects the level of the league as a whole.

Actually, by this time we've got very good information about how the teams in a conference compare. If you were to learn that one team is much stronger or weaker than previously thought with respect to the rest of DIII, you'd have good information about the whole conference.

However, just one or two post-season games don't give a very good indication of the strength of a team. Suggestive evidence, really.

Take the women's ASC as an extreme example. Massey has 4 teams from that conference in the top 6. However, although we know pretty well how the teams in that conference compare with each other, they each play only about 4 out-of-conference games, early in teh season. The strength of the whole conference could be skewed.

If both ASC teams were to lose early in the tourney, we'd have suggestive info that the other teams in the conference were overrated as well. Make that, if the other ASC team also loses early.

CD:  Not wanting to look to far ahead, but it would be my thinking that either Calvin or Hope has a big fight ahead of them, tonight included.  Calvin has already proven they can deal with ranked teams, and Hope's performance yesterday surely indicates they have some weapons as well. The winner of tonights game will face stiff competion, but imho have reasonable chances for success in the next round.  Should either of them face UWSP at some time in the future they will have to play the games of their lives, and get some bounces/luck to go their way.   The better or more highly ranked teams don't always win, and that is what makes tournament time so special.

I'm not positive, but I think St. Thomas would be beyond the magic 500 miles of either Hope or Calvin.

Is anyone in here watching the Michigan-Ohio State game.  If so, how sweet is that hairstyle that Petway is sporting for Michigan.  He had the winged helmet shaved out of his hair!  It looks pretty sweet if you ask me!!! 8)

Not if they take the....

ferry!!! :D  ::)

Heh... can you imagine the injustice if that actually happened?? I'm pretty sure this bracket was designed so that Point would host though. It should be noted, however, that St. Thomas must be pretty high up there on the committee's list as one of the 5 byes. I guess we'll see... but frankly, I sorta doubt it.

Hey, I just noticed that Calvin actually got 6 votes in the last d3hoops.com poll. Interesting.

FDF:  I made the same assumption the minute I saw the brackets.  I think for the next round to be anywhere but Stevens Point would require them to lose tonight.  In 92 Calvin, and Otterbein from the GL region played at Gustavus A. in MN with a team from CA as the 4th team.  In 00 Calvin had a bye the first round, and almost got knocked out by Franklin in the second.  Calvin also hosted the sweet 16, and those are still some of my favorite all-time games.  It is good to be ranked number one for somethings.

As for the refs of the Calvin @ Aurora game, I thought that they did a good job. Morrow, O'Neil, and Curtis are a CCIW crew, and I've seen them do some bad games. But last night they let the kids play at both ends of the floor, and were consistent in doing so. All you can ask for is consistency and even-handedness, and they provided it. The extra contact allowed, if anything, worked in Calvin's favor -- the Knights were the bigger and more physical team.

The Calvin radio announcer agreed and also commented that the officiating style didn't hurt Calvin for the reasons Greg describes above. I think assistant coach VanDyke also thought so as evidenced by his comment that Calvin's crashing the boards on the last missed free throw (without a whistle) didn't hurt their chances one bit.

Reimink was also impressive

Hard to believe that kid didnt get recruited anywhere really out of HS....AND last year he really didnt make the varsity team, he was just asked to "play both" which meant he wasnt even in the team picture!

Hope's been leading the entire game until the last minute or so. Calvin's been catching up. Then a Veldhouse 3, a Zoerhof steal and slam, and Calvin is leading 28-23 with 8 minutes left in the half. 11-2 run for Calvin.

What happened to the Calvin broadcast? All I got was a study of 1 Timothy. Interesting maybe, but as interesting as a Calvin-Hope ballgame?  :o  Hope's announcers are homers, just a bit.

Hope retakes the lead 32-31. Calvin 33-32. Hope 42-33, 7 threes for Hope.

The Bible teacher was David Bast who I believe is an RCA pastor. I smell a Hope plot to force listeners to the Hope broadcast. :o

David Bast isn't big on the current state of churches, is he.

Hope leading 50-42 at the half. Lots of scoring!
