I had to chuckle when, while reading for my Jurisprudence class, I discovered that the John Calvin section I had to read started on page 666.

I have heard a grumbling hear and there on this board and in the middle of a long post asked about it but I will make this most just for that matter.

What are the very vague rumors about some large, post player recruit? Or is this just wishful thinking? I remember some mention of a discussion at the Hilltop about this supposed recruit.

Not sure if this is the one referred to, but I've heard this rumor from 2 different people.

Makes sense, what with the coach's firing and all.

He's very talented (and 6'9") but he is not a "true post player."

As part of the crowd not at the Hilltop I think the "big recruit" would be more than a Hillsdale transfer whose production fell as the season progressed. Just the feeling I get. I understand the decision not to release any names or more clues though until something is official.

Amen to that - we don't need to be posting every rumor here.  I prefer that, as far as recruiting goes, we don't post anything until the school or the individual are talking about it publicly.

That was probably me that had said Hope didn't look all that great and nothing special about them.  I'll still admit that now.  Obviously, for those Hope fans that saw Point for the first time could be saying the same thing about the #1 team in the nation! lol.

I saw them beat up on Chicago and they looked pretty good, but someone told me that Chicago wasn't really that good in the first place.  Carroll and Hope were two similar teams that liked to go, go, go...sometimes not knowing where they are going, but getting there in a hurry!  :D  There seemed to be countless times when they just got a rebound and tried to push the ball up as fast as they can, sometimes coughing the ball up and other times launching a shot with 25 seconds still on the clock.  No offense to Hope or Carroll, but I would've wanted to play either of those two teams first because I think we could control the tempo and neither really had a big guy like Ruths to worry about.  We spanked Carroll at the beginning of the year and I'm smart enough to know that had we met them (or Hope) first or had we beaten Washington U, I know it wasn't going to be that easy again.  I was just more comfortable with the idea of playing Hope or Carroll rather than playing the only team with a post threat!  Oh well.

Its always easy to say we would rather play.....after you can't.  An observation...when you have two evenly matched teams playing their guts out defensively, neither team will "look good".  I am a great defender of GVW as a coach BUT Hope got killed by the same BLOB (baseline out of bounds) play the whole 2nd half, they only adjusted to it late in the game by then it was too late.  Guessing here but I think Wash U scored 6-10 points (most from the line) on BLOB's....in an evenly matched game, those are often the difference!

BTW that new Mexican restaraunt (down by the Holiday Inn)  in SP had outstanding food and even better service!!!  Hope some of y'all got to try it.

Actually, I thought about that before the Washington U. game because of the similar styles Hope and Carroll play.  Point has more problems with teams that have a solid post player.

I will have to admit, the Mexican restaurant near the Holiday Inn Express has very good food.

Yeah, that baseline-out-of-bounds play seemingly happened everytime.  I think Hope was actually lucky because the guy kept missing the shot after getting fouled.

When I say neither team looked good, it has little to do with defense.  A player from either team would get a defensive rebound and then immediately put on his track shoes, then sometimes turning the ball over.  Another example would be launching 3s with plenty of time left on the shot clock.  :D  There are turnovers caused by defense and there are unforced turnovers that result in not using fundamentals.  Slow the ball down, regroup and reset the offense.   It's not brain science or rocket surgery.

OS - that is your perception, but not reality.  You've posted the same thing on multiple boards since the two Friday games.  Your premise seems to be:

Hope and Carroll turnned the ball over a lot and it's due to poor play or the speed with which they play and they shoot the ball way to fast and don't play with good fundamentals (my paraphrase of your postings).

The stats from Friday's games would disagree with you completely.

Turnovers
11  Wash U
12  UWSP

10  Carroll
11  Hope

Average time per shot
WashU & UWSP took a total of 110 shots in 40 minutes or 1 shot every 21.8 seconds

Carroll & Hope took a total of 134 shots in 40 minutes or 1 shot every 17.9 seconds

a whopping 4 second difference and yet they both managed to shoot better than UWSP

Shooting percentage
50.0%  WashU
37.1%  UWSP

44.3%  Carroll
42.5%  Hope

If you're going to insult the way a team plays, at least get your facts straight.  It seems to me that you prefer the style of play that the Pointers play - that's fine.  But it's not smart to think there's only one way to play the game.  Most folks who think that way are usually disappointed - or sent home early  ;)

Sorority girls trying to create a clique of all the most attractive females? I am shocked, shocked I tell you!

Is anyone from MIAA country going to be heading to VA this weekend? I was getting too excited about a potential Final Four which would have been 50% my teams, but I still want to go root on the one remaining.

Also unfortunate (only a little) that I was enjoying Florida sun and didn't get to see Hope play just twice more this year.

i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

I think that's the right idea: don't discuss recruits in particular until a commitment has taken place. I would think, though, that it's ok to discuss what you think your team needs. Alma is going to have to figure out a way to replace Smith (who, by the way, I saw attending the games in Aurora). Calvin will need another body inside, but is clearly set at the guard positions. I'll be interested to see what they do with Veltema. Clearly they'll move Mantel inside more, and probably bring up Engelsma to shore up the frontcourt. I'm not sure what Veltema will play - he's more of a 2 than a 3, I think, but Calvin is pretty deep there already.

As to Hope: obviously it would be great to see them get a true post player. Neither Klein nor Kratz is really a 5, and Osbourn I'm not sure about. I think he'll be a good contributor for them. Then - what? - DVS and Wolfe in the backcourt, but I'm not sure how deep they go beyond that. I'm not sold on Greenan. I heard one of the freshman guards on the JV was promising. Anyone watch the JV much this year? Any promising post players there?

Didn't Morehouse ask the Hope posters to drop stuff about Depauw last year?

yes, but most of us can still find humor in such things. :)
