As to Hope: obviously it would be great to see them get a true post player. Neither Klein nor Kratz is really a 5, and Osbourn I'm not sure about. I think he'll be a good contributor for them. Then - what? - DVS and Wolfe in the backcourt, but I'm not sure how deep they go beyond that. I'm not sold on Greenan. I heard one of the freshman guards on the JV was promising. Anyone watch the JV much this year? Any promising post players there?

There is a guy or two from the jv that might develop into a post presence -- FDF could answer that question more thoroughly.  Brandon Bosch is a soph guard, and seems to have the necessary skills (he tweaked his ankle during try-outs; I've wondered if we would have seen him on the varsity otherwise).  But don't rule out Greenan just yet.  Although what you would have seen during games most likely didn't wow you, he definitely has the ability.  He's can shoot with great accuracy, and his moves and passing ability remind me in some ways of Matt Taylor.  Not sure why this wasn't more visible in game situations, except that coming off the bench late in the game is just plain tough.  I expect to see good things out of him next season.

I think that's the right idea: don't discuss recruits in particular until a commitment has taken place.

You guys aren't going to get people to stop doing this, I'm pretty sure, and I'm not going to back any requests to enforce these preferences.

6'11" Brian Puls obviously has the size

Size can be measured in all 3 dimensions, I imagine Brian needs to spend a lot of time with Barry Bonds between now and next season to be ready to contribute at the varsity level.

More news about an experience for some of us within the past few years!

Didn't Morehouse ask the Hope posters to drop stuff about Depauw last year?
What he asked the posters (on the women's board) to do was stop attacking the DePauw student section for their behaviour at the Elite 8 game last year.  This has nothing to do with that   ;D

So we shouldn't voice that opinion??

Steve Cramer makes the D3hoops all-region team.

1st team all-region for Stephen - well deserved!!

3rd team all-region for Caleb Veldhouse - not sure I agree with that (just being honest)

EDIT - and that somehow cost me karma - what a shock

I don't want to take anything away from Cramer's aura around here but why did he wait until it was do or die for his career to start taking over games?  Great player but I often wondered why he didn't do what we saw the past month a lot more.

Ziggy, I agree and disagree. Cramer easily could have gone for 25 a night all season long but it really was never necessary for him to do so and as the consummate team player he didn't take shots just to pad his stats. At the beginning of the year DVS, MVH, and Cramer seemed to take turns on a regular rotation going for big points in a game. However, as the season progressed MVH and DVS really seemed to lose their touch and their 18+ point performances completely disappeared. Once the NCAA arrived it was clearly Cramer or nobody. DVS and MVH suffered minor injuries in the MIAA tourney and even before then their production level had dropped so it was time for Cramer to step up.

Back in the season GVW would also pull Cramer before he could go for 25 some nights because except for the Carthage and Wheaton losses and the second Calvin win Hope was always winning by 15+ points.

Although I think this all brings up an interesting basketball philosophy question. Would you rather have a team with 3-4 quality players that share the scoring load and anyone can go off on a given night? (aka the Pistons championship team) or would you prefer a team with a consistent go to guy from day one of season and then 1 or 2 quality guys that hit 10-15 each night (ie the Bulls under Jordan with Pippen and Kukoc or Grant)?

Personally, I prefer the one solid go to guy, ie the Bulls of the 90s or todays Heat, Lakers, etc. and in the 7 years I have closely followed Hope basketball I think the team has always gone more the route of the Pistons. Even in the days of Don Overbeek he was rarely allowed to take over games except on a few occassions and those were in the close games. (MIAA semifinal in 2003, Second Round NCAA game against Osh-Kosh in 2003 as well.) Part of that is GVW tries to get minutes to all his players and does not want to appear unsportsmanlike playing the star in blowout pre-conference or conference games. However, I personally wish Hope had a different approach. I think the fact that Overbeek before and Cramer the last two years were not made the go to guy from day one hurt the team come tourney time. Its a personal opinion of course and I understand disagreement but I think a system where one guy takes over consistently works best if your team has a guy like that. Cramer was that guy and he showed it in his last 5 games. I think if the team had adopted that strategy all year though everyone would have played better around Cramer at the end.

Can someone explain to me what exactly is the harm about mentioning possible recruits and new players.  No one is here is going to have any type of sway over the decisions of these young men and it is debatable if said recruits ever see this board anyways.  By taking a strict no discussion stance it removes a lot of the fun of the off-season, that is what keeps many fans going in the off-season.  Sometimes it is nice to know who will or might be coming.  It gives everyone some hope (hate using that word as a Calvin Grad) in the off season.  Until I am informed of the logical reason behind many of the posters stance on this board it seems kind of a holier-than-thou attitude, like being in an exclusive club and letting people know that you have inside information but right now it is "classified".  No one on this board is THAT important, if you know about it chances are many others have a sniff of said info as well.

Anyways, enough of my rant, I'm sure my karma will take a major nose-dive for sharing these thoughts.  I'm just curious why people are so cryptic about this type of info.
