I would guess that the tournament may rotate between the Grand Rapids schools.  I have not been to Cornerstone's Gym but Aquinas is one of the worst I have seen.  It is almost as bad as the Olivet Gym.

And some interesting (at least to me) stuff about attendance:

Hope leads the nation with average home attendance of 2923.  Second is Wooster at 1943, and Calvin is third at 1891.  The MIAA leads the nation as a conference, with average home attendance of 1100.

The "interesting stuff":

- Hope's average attendance over all games (home, road, neutral) is 2075, still high enough to lead the nation.  Obviously Hope draws well on the road as well as at home.

- Hope's attendace would have placed them 5th in DII and 164th in DI.  That's higher than 161 DI teams.

- Someone did this last year, and compared attendance to % of enrollment.  Here are the numbers for the MIAA (Albion is the shocker for me)

School - Enrollment - Attendance - Percentage

Hop               2893          2923           101.03%
Calvin            4330          1891             43.67%
TSU               1110            659              59.37%
Kalamazoo    1265            447              35.34%
Olivet              940            395              42.02%
Adrian             978            320              32.72%
Albion            1852            275              14.85%
Alma              1249            266              21.30%

I believe Hope's enrollment was actually 3203. Still close to 100% though.

I just used what d3hoops has listed for each schools enrollment.

"During the 2006-07 school year, Hope has 3,203 students from 44 states and territories and 29 foreign countries."

Hope has no grad programs, and that is the number I heard used all year.

With the coaching opening at OC I was wondering if there are any Miaa assistants that will be a candidate for that job.  Does anyone know of anyone that would be a great fit for that job?

That's nice and all, but the numbers that schools submit to the federal government are the ones we go with. As I said, full-time undergraduates. Perhaps you have part-time students or perhaps some dropped classes between when the federal Title IX paperwork was filed and when they wrote that page.

Since so many schools pad and round their enrollment figures on their sites and in their media guides, we go with the number schools send the U.S. Department of Education. Seems more reliable, somehow.

It didn't help Albion that they had a 6 week winter break in which they played 3 or 4 conference games.   That being  said, I noticed their student section was palty compared to those of the past.
I am shocked that K came in at the middle of the pack.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Albion's 2-11 start probably didn't help much either.  Their 275 average is probably their lowest in many, many years.

Albion's two highest draws most years are Calvin and Hope, this year they drew 327 for Calvin, and 252 for Hope.  The Hope game was of course a rescheduled game on a Monday night, not exactly a prime time slot and the crowd reflected that.

But even still Albion has never drawn alot of big crowds, over the past 2 seasons they've played only one game in front of more than 1,000 at home.  The 2006 Calvin game which drew 1048.

Albion's average home attendance
07--275
06--475
05--877  *includes 5 staight post-season crowds over 1000 +MIAA Champ
04--518
03--676  +MIAA Champ

Most years I've been at the Albion/Hope game the crowd is around 1200, but the last 2 years have been really disappointing.  I think the 06 game was also weather affected.  Interesting, but the reverse game in Holland has been one of the top drawing games for several years now, right behind the Calvin sellouts.  The first Albion game at DeVos held the single game attendance record untill this season.

Yeah, you guys are both right about Albion.  I guess part of my assessment of that is just my belief that it always seems to be a big, hostile crowd there for the Dutchmen.  Not having Spaman to harass has probably cut down on some students as well  ;D

The other surprise for me is the upturn in attendance for TSU.  In their 3 years in the MIAA, they've almost doubled attendance each year:

04-05  161
05-06  318
06-07  659

Pretty strong correlation to team improvement too.

They make a lot of 3's because the take a lot of 3's.  But seriously, that is a program that seems to be headed in the right direction.
