sorry, I'm not really into the karma stuff being relatively new to the site.  however, I'm really curious to hear how the league went last night, and more specifically, were any of the highly regarded frosh class playing (if only a minute or two).  I had heard that this is usually a upperclassman/varsity experienced group that plays together in the summer.  Can someone enlighten us?????
2013 MIAA Pick em' Champion

Knightmare

As I've stated before, I've been reading the MIAA board regularly for just under 10 yrs. (since being at Calvin, has it been that long since college, man I'm getting old) and actually used to post years ago but have found it quite hard to be a poster since moving north from Grand Rapids and not seeing much bball.  This board is now my link to stay up to date on MIAA basketball and very much appreciated.

Having given my background and saying all that, the real reason of my post is regarding the recent "karma" and "smiting" dialogue.  First, I don't think folks should get hung up on what your karma rating is.  Your karma rating does not have any impact on what kind of person you want to be, can be or are.  It doesn't change what kind of values and moral ethics you have or what kind of spouse, parent, brother, sister etc. that you are.

Now given that karma is a part of this board and right now is being abused by some, wouldn't it be possible to institute some type of feedback system similar to Ebay's.  You could have everyone's karma rating where you can click on it and bring up the karma history that shoes who gave a positive or negative karma with a one line explanation of why.  I think a system like Ebay feedback system with possible minor tweaks could accomplish the desired goal of folks having to be accountable when giving karma.

Anyways, just my two cents.  Looking forward to visiting Calvin's new arena in the future.  Between DeVos and Calvin's new home I suspect that the MIAA may have the two best venues in DIII basketball when all said and done.  What a luxury to have for the league and each school.

Found out this weekend though that St. Joe seems to be where Hope players go to retire.   ;D  Good to see you, guys!   ;)

Seems they all get hired by former Dew Crew leader "BIG NORM" who co-founded with Spanky...not sure of the company, but some kind of business-related field.

Sorry to see April go,

Never fear, she'll be back.  She always comes back.  She needs this.  It seems to me a huge part of her identity is wrapped up in D3hoops.com.

Rumor has it that Sac's three mystery mid season transfers from last year finally make it through Immigration and will all be on the roster in the winter.  Its a relief to have a true because of the lack of Hope's recruiting efforts this off season.  Hopefully this brings us back to legitimate basketball talk for AT LEAST 20 or 30 seconds.....

Got more info on the 3 Hope transfers.  Apparently they've made quit an impression in the short time they've been there.

The first really isn't a transfer. Stefan Rheinsthreys comes to Hope from Westlake, Ohio via Hanover, Germany.   As a 6-4 Sr. exchange student he averaged 24.8 points per game shooting over 65% from 3, and makeing 5 per game.  Has excellent ball skills, loves to shoot 3's obviously.   I asked him about gaurding Veldhouse and he just laughed and said, Veldhouse was vulnerable to flops and he'd get him in foul trouble every game.  Also said he doesn't go for fakes in the lane.

Brian Skreens is 6-6 250, played D1 football for Utah St as a TE, but a shoulder injury put an end to his football career.  Apparently GVW's morman ties convinced him Hope was the right place for him.  Doesn't score much but really throws his weight around.  I over heard Glenn say "he's like Spaman, only better".  He'll probably start

Lastly the guy who's makeing the biggest impact is Igor Dunksovernites.  The 6-11 stud played D1 hoops for Cornell last year but wanted a better academic challenge.  Despite that desire he ended up in Holland, said he was impressed with Vanderheide's performance last year and wanted to be the man in the middle Hope could count on for easy buckets.  Calls himself the missing piece, most at the practice just called him huge.

Skot, thanks for the refocus, and the laugh!

Lest any Hope fan get too caught up in the shape of things to come, don't forget that Calvin, although not having a great recruiting year by most counts, has some powerful talent already in place.  As they get a year older, they will, as usual be formidible, regardless of any other camp's recruiting.  (Just a reality check for myself, really...)   :)

No she won't, no she doesn't, and no it isn't.

The previous format used a star system where you rated an individual post with 1 to 5 stars.  That didn't work either because people still gave stars based on a posters team affiliation.

I hope so.  Nobody works as hard at it than her.  I'm a regular SCIAC poster but no longer live close enough to see games, and she (along with OxyBob)  really has expanded my knowledge of what's going on in the SCIAC.

Been gone for a few days, so just catching up.

Sorry to see April go, but I do have one issue/complaint: I sort of get the idea of HOF's being able to "correct" posts, and in some ways it makes sense to have individuals, who by their very posting nature, are able to "screen" or "filter" inappropriate posts... But why is it possible to completely remove posts, because you don't like what it says or that it is addressed to you specifically?

As far as Karma... Earlier in the year I was tying to recover negative Karma for all on the board... for some posters I hated doing it, because quite frankly I'd rather give them negative karma for what they write, but in an effort to keep everyone above zero I tried. Obviously someone out there will be one day facing real life negative karma, because I just can't keep up with the hope1 hater!

The way karma is handed out is silly! It would be nice to see a list of karma givers and takers associated with each poster. And, I think a reason should be given for either. Maybe the HOF's could pick up another job: KARMA FILTERS...

The karma feature would work much better if every poster could see a list of where their negative karma came from.  It would create a sense of accountability for the people dishing it out and would stop all of the silly "closet smiting."

I probably pay less attention to karma that just about anyone here (and I've never given anyone either positive or negative karma because I think the system is flawed as is), but I know yesterday I had "42."  Then after the following post on CCIW Chat yesterday, I had 41...

A group of IWU's returning and incoming players are on a team up in the suburbs, but I'm not sure where.  I believe it includes Brett Chamernik, Elias Washington, Sean Dwyer (if healthy), Duncan Lawson, Doug Sexauer, Edmond O'Callaghan, and Chris Stamas.

The guys who stay around B-N end up playing against the Illinois State players on a pretty regular basis throughout the summer.

Very controversial post obviously.

All of the "closet smiting" undermines the credibility of the system.  If somehow people could see where it was coming from, they could initiate dialogue with the smiter and have a real conversation about what problem the person had with the post(s).  It would also stop all of the silliness.  As is, I suspect we have people that just smite the same posters day after day for no reason.

I've been on other sites where you need to state the REASON for smiting or applauding.

One of the drawbacks to the current system is that the karma can change for no apparent reason, whether based on the most recent posts or not.  For example, if someone hasn't been online for the last week (like me, in this situation, who is just a bit confused...) might come and read a week's worth of posts.  There might be a post from 5 days ago that evokes a reaction (one way or the other), but the poster doesn't have any idea why it occurs.

The only true reason I've changed anyone's karma is out of boredom more than anything else.  I really don't care about it... it's just a button to push and the great majority of the time has a note about why it was done (+K for you Ypsi, that was really funny!.... etc)

I say we change the karma system to resemble that of the "disagreements" shared by major and minor league baseball managers.

If I don't agree with you, I'm going to throw a fit, army crawl from second base, and throw a fake grenade at your feet. Upon further disagreement, I will get in your face, kick dirt on your shoes, and kick my hat around harder than any european soccer star.

I haven't quite worked out what we can do for +k though... any ideas?

Look for new Olivet coach to be Gene Gifford, who was coach and AD at Muskegon CC; coming with him, star player Brandon McClary.

Going up to the ol' high school digs for a 3 on 3 tourney this weekend. I just learned that David Bunn and Paul Crosby have teams. My team starts out against current Laingsburg coach and Hope grad Greg Mitchell.

This should be interesting.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
