Looking down the list of 2007 Michigan high school players on Steve Bells MLive weblog shows that hope got a VERY IMPRESSIVE class coming in.

Take a look:  www.mlive.com/weblogs/hsbasketball/

Considering all the talent that Calvin already has in-house and this Hope recruiting class "THE RIVALRY" could see some epic games in the next few years and some very high national rankings from BOTH schools.  Let's get this coming season started.

Anyone know anything about Cornerstone's pro/college game to be held on June 23?  I just caught the tail end of the report on Fox last night...

CM:  There is an article in the Thursday GR Press.  Part of the plan is to replace the old Ta-Wa-Si bball festival.  This is the h.s all star game from several years back.   The C'stone event is labeled Hoops Heaven.  H.s girls play 6-22 @ 5:30 p.m.  boys game follows at 7 p.m.  It is a h.s all star event apparently.  On the 23rd is the pro-college event @ 7 p.m. Pro players:  Carlos Rogers, Laron Profit, Armen Gilliiam, and Remell Corey are mentioned.  Next the article mentions "local college stars", but no names are given.  Could be a fun evening.

Thanks, realist.  That helps make sense of the bits and pieces that I did manage to hear.  I agree -- could be a fun evening!

What I find intersting about Mr Bell's list is he has Tanis as honorable mention at his position.  Tanis was on a couple of media Class A All State First Teams, including the Detroit Free Press.    I'd love to hear the reason why he has him so much further down his list.

As far as the epic games for the "next few years", keep in mind Hope will graduate 7 roster players next season.  So there will be more holes to fill beyond the 08 season..........and freshman are still freshman. ;)

Going up to the ol' high school digs for a 3 on 3 tourney this weekend. I just learned that David Bunn and Paul Crosby have teams. My team starts out against current Laingsburg coach and Hope grad Greg Mitchell.

This should be interesting.

I remember Greg playing against my high school in the early 80's, he could shoot 3's before the 3 point line mattered.  He must have played against "Superman"  Kent Clark, who was a very good PG for my high school around that time.  Kent ended up at either MTU or NMU.

Good luck and don't pull anything.

Re. Tanis ...

Strength of the position overall knocks him out. The two Hope guys to-be that made the top 10 at their position are in weaker groups -- Sharples at forward, where the only guy getting a DI scholarship is Ike Udanoh to Long Island (after the GLIAC schools said he wasn't DII caliber !?!); Carter at point gaurd, a little better with three DI scholarship guys (LJ Frazier is walking on to EMU), but there is always a dearth of players at that position, odd given height demographics, but not odd when you consider all the shoot-first, low basketball IQ guards there are out there.

At Tanis' position, you have Mr. Basketball, another top 5 Mr. Basketball finalist (Manny Harris and LLP), a kid going to CMU who had a # of offers from high-major conferences (Chase Simon) and three more DI scholarship guards ... and three more at that if not for grades.

Tanis is a talented player, a capable scorer, and a good pickup for Hope. After announcing that he would attend Hope, Tanis was quoted as saying that Glenn had told him ever since 7th grade that Tanis would be Hope's number 1 recruit the year he graduated from high school. Calvin recruited Tanis too and thought they had a chance to steal him away. The fact that KVS lives literally within walking distance from Jenison High School made it easy for him to take in a number of games last winter but, alas, to no avail. I believe SBell is right that statewide depth at his position makes it difficult to put Tanis in the top 30. I don't claim to have personal knowledge of his high school situation but insiders I know in Wildcat country tell me that locker room issues helped deep-six last year's Jenison HS  team which beat the Kelvin Grady led East Grand Rapids team during the regular season, finished 18-3, and ended in a shocking and disappointing district tournament loss to a rather pedestrian Hudsonville High quintet. I'm not saying Tanis was responsible for those insider issues but apparently there was resentment over the fact that he and his running mate at guard, Wesley Trammel, took the bulk of the shots on Jenison's team. Tanis was a four year starter at Jenison and was very durable, never missing a game. I think it will take a couple of years but he could be a formidable D3 opponent.

First time I ever saw Tyler play, summer after his freshman year it was August, and my addiction was kicking in, so rented the Y in Grand Haven (great location and facility, btw) to let some kids play. All kinds of good West Michigan kids, Muskegon Hts, David Kool, etc. ... Tanis was there, wearing a Hope shirt. And so it passed.

Found out this weekend though that St. Joe seems to be where Hope players go to retire.   ;D  Good to see you, guys!   ;)

Seems they all get hired by former Dew Crew leader "BIG NORM" who co-founded with Spanky...not sure of the company, but some kind of business-related field.

Yep, I know a lot of those guys.  Not just Hope guys, though, a few guys from other schools hanging out and having a good time together, taking on the locals in the rec leagues.

Not surprising in the least.  The Tanis family is very connected at Hope.  Tyler's brother is already there, and they've got some old Dutch roots there.

I'm really glad to see Jeff get the head job at WO.  He has proven himself as a coach at the freshman level.  Let's HOPE he survives the politics of the WO program.
