"Well, well, Johnny, that was quite the cannonball!"

I have it on good authority who shall remain nameless (but his initials are FDF), that artillery was placed at the corner of Lincoln Ave and E 11th Street facing northeast. They overshot the intended target a mere couple hundred feet away and the shell landed at Knollcrest. Johnny, you better go get your gun. ;)

I doubt if many NFL players ever lost more Superbowl games than that.

No Lions.  ;)  With free agency now, there might be 1 or 2 we might not realize.  I bet there are a few Vikings who lost 4 SB's in an 8 year span.  The only other team to lose 4 is the Broncos but with a 14 year time span its doubtfull they have any.   Mecklenberg maybe?, that guy was there forever.  I can't remember when Tom Jackson retired, he may have made all 4 of those games also.

As for Metzelaars, Wabash beat Hope in the Sweet 16 82-70.  Wabash went on to win the National Championship and I believe Metzelaars was the MVP.

Yes, he was. Metzelaars and Jeff Gibbs of Otterbein are also the only two student-athletes to be named a D3 All-American in both football and basketball. Unsurprisingly, both were tight ends.

Metzelaars, who played for Seattle, Carolina, and Detroit in addition to his long stint with the Bills, won a Super Bowl ring last winter as an assistant coach for the Colts. So at least one of Marv Levy's proteges has finally made it to the promised land in his post-Buffalo career.

The Christmas holiday tournament that Calvin is playing in at Montclair State will also include Keene State and Salem State.

That's not a very intriguing response....

So, I am now working on E. Paris not far from the Calvin campus.  I can see the crane, but haven't been over to check it out.   All I can say is that it must be nice.

BTW, what's with the Calvin Seminary getting called out by the Education department regarding its relationships with financial aid lenders?   Alma too. Heads up!

That's a really intriguing tournament.

Keene State beat Salem State in the second round of NCAA tournament by 1 this past season.  Keene won 25 games last year. One interesting thing about last year's schedule was they played Rhode Island College 4 times. They lost to them in the Sweet 16. Tyler Kathan, 6'5" forward, was MVP of their league as a Sophomore.

Salem State won 24 games last year.  They have a new Coach this year.  They went 91-20 the past 4 years under the previous coach.

Calvin's first two tournaments look more intriguing, or at least more challenging.

If Calvin (Massey #28 last year) can get past Grace Bible on Nov. 16, they'll face either Ohio Northern (Massey #33) or Washington U (Massey #2).   Does anyone know how WashU will compare to last year?

Then, five days later, they'll face Cornerstone, followed the next day by Aquinas or Hope. Cornerstone and Hope (Massey #5) were both better than Calvin last year, according to Massey, and Aquinas wasn't far behind.

The following weekend it doesn't get any easier, with games against Carthage (Massey #41) and Wheaton (Massey #25).

Depending on how fast the knights come off the blocks, they could finish anywhere from 1-5 on up for these 6 games. There may be only two games where they'll be favored, according to Massey's ratings for last year.

Actually in the second tournament, there is no chance for Calvin to face Hope.  That tournament is now a "classic" meaning Hope & Calvin each play one game against each of the other schools - Aquinas & Cornerstone

Dark Knight  - Wash  U returns 4 starters from last year, plus a senior who would have started but missed the season with a ruptured achilles tendon.
They will be a little weak off the bench unless a new face or two in their recruiting class can help right away..

Their man in the middle, Troy Ruths, may very well be a preseason first team All American, and their point guard Sean Wallis may also get some mention...

As I am in St Louis and follow Wash U closely, I can go into detail for you shortly before the tourney  -  Of course all my Hope friends who went to Wisconsin last year and saw Wash U and Hope play will also be able to chime in.

A shame that Calvin saw fit to keep Grace Bible in the tourney - had they invited a solid fourth team it well could have been the D3 tournament of the year. (unless of course Grace Bible has gotten much better quickly)

The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

I saw Wash U several times last year.  As they return everyone from a great team (and get a key injured player back), I see them as the preseason #1 and a very legitimate national championship contender.  The Bears have a great point-guard in Sean Wallis, a great low post player in Troy Ruths, and a great wing in Tyler Nading...they also have solid role players.

I saw Calvin twice last year (both tournament games @ Aurora) so I am familiar with what the Knights return too.  Wash U/Calvin would be a great game to see...at Calvin, I'd called it a toss-up.

What's intriguing is the multi-regionality, the three NCAA Tournament teams and the fact that teams who don't normally see each other will face off. Color me not intrigued by more games against Cornerstone and Aquinas.

Indeed. Instead, this tournament will have two games that aren't even relevant in the Division III landscape.

I want to see inter-region games, even if they don't count towards post-season consideration.  It gives us a better handle on the relative strengths of the regions.

I agree about Grace Bible being a wasted opportunity.

While Grace Bible is still not the most exciting opponent, they have made great strides over their teams of just a few years back.  I don't think that they are the icon of calamity that they have been (but no, they're no Wash U either). :)
