Anyone know anything about any of the other freshmen at Calvin?  I can't wait until they post the rosters in a couple weeks.

Bryan VanHarn might be on varsity, who is a very smart PG that can handle the ball well and is excellent on fast-breaks.  If not, he'll be the for-sure starter on JV.

[Apologies to MIAAers for temporarily hijacking your board!]

Greg, I wondered about Harper.  A couple months ago I tallied up all the multiple all-CCIW players and found a number of three-time first-teamers who got nothing in their first (or last?) year.  Two others were Vikings: Keith McDonald (71-73) and Mike Starks (86-88) - transfers? late bloomers? caught behind a star senior as a freshman? injured?  Any info?

I'm not sure if Keith McDonald (Bosko Djurickovic's former backcourt mate and a former North Park basketball coach himself) started as a freshman, came off the bench, or was strictly a JV player. That was way before my time. The person to ask about Mac's playing status in 1969-70 is Dennis Prikkel.

Michael Starks and his identical twin brother Myron both transferred to North Park from Kennedy-King College prior to the 1985-86 school year. Michael was a sophomore, and thus played for the Vikings for three years, while Myron came to the Park as a junior and thus only wore the royal blue and gold for two years.

Maybe I missed it, but he wasn't really a scorer in HS, was he?  How would he compare with other kids Calvin's taken of that variety - Vriesman, Mike Worst, Josh Berghuis, etc?

Worst was somewhat similar, in that he was a pass-first PG out of GRCHS.

Well one thing different about those players you listed was they were coach by Tom Vanderlaan, and Vanderlaan left after VanHarn's sophmore year and was replaced by Mark Warners.  They ran quite different offenses.  My opinion is Vanerlaan's offense fit more into VanHarn's style of play than Warners did.

I do remember Worst had trouble(only played two years) at Calvin with handling the ball with the opposing team(I remember a particular Hope game that was not pretty for him) put a lot of pressure on him.  I don't see that happening with VanHarn, especially when he starts to get bigger.

Like a lot of PGs, he shoots for a pretty nice 3-point percentage.  Like I said before, you'll be most impressed by the way he pushes the ball up on fast-breaks and turns the defenders all around.

Bryan is an outstanding PG whom i've watched play 12-15 times.  He is outstanding in transition, sees the floor very ball, good handles, and can play good D (he'll have to get much stronger for this in college). He is the guard you love to play with because he WILL get you the rock where you need it.  Probably deferred too much of the scoring responsibilities in HS.  Not a great shooter by any means (more consistancy needed), although they almost look like they will drop, it may click for him eventually.  Calvin players, coaches and fans will love him.  comes from a wonderful home (mom) after suffering a tragic loss of his dad about 1 1/2 ago??? Believe his brother goes to calvin as well but not a hoopster.

I recall a few open gyms where kids would line up to play on Bryan's team because, like hoopdreams said, he'd make life easy for the scorers. Met his dad, Phil, a few times at various venues, and he was a cool guy.

No comment on the previous posts (especially nothing in German)   ;D

With just over 24 hours until the first legal day of practice, I looked around to see if any of the teams had any info posted.  The only thing I found was that KZoo has a pre-season roster posted:

The SID could have put an actual byline on the story when he sent it as a press release. There's way more to the story, not surprisingly, that Historian hasn't mentioned. It'll get taken care of.

I think we were supposed to just guess what name to put on it. There was no byline on the release.

Ah, there is another Blue Crew, more clandestine, more hilarious, and better represented on this board...    ;)  (And mighty good company, all things considered!  :D)

Happy first day of practice to all of our friends out there! ;D
