Haven't seen a link to this yet - Calvin's roster is up

McCray and Koetsier are listed as Sophomores but both are Juniors (I believe that Todd got a medical redshirt for his true freshman year).

I see them listed as Juniors.  Maybe they corrected it already.

Regarding the Freshman class discussion, Steve Honderd's class at Calvin (90-93) has to be right there with anyone.  Over four years they went 109 - 11 including 3 regular season conference championships, the first two MIAA conference tournament championships.  In the NCAA, they got to the final 8 all four years, 2 trips to the Final Four with a National Championship in 92.

Also, from what I hear, expect Sophomore Josh Engelsma to see a lot of minutes in the post.  He has a great knack of scoring around the basket and scored a ton of points on the JV team last year.

Alright....now that it's official, it's time for Katt/Engelsma/Schuster to step up their games and become a serviceable big man next to JM.

I had heard rumors about recruits, but apparently they're on JV if they made it at all.

It'll be interesting to see if Schuster is a late bloomer like his older brother.  From MIAA nothing to 3rd in the NCAA Championship 800m as a senior (2007).

At best a shaky comparison . . . the 800m runner needs to stay trim with some strength, the post player needs bulk and loads of strength.

I don't think the comparison was a physical one.

Some random, useless information.

Hope Roster Average Height: 76.1 In
Hope Starter's Average Height (DVS, Wolfe, MVH, Reimink, Klein): 75.4 In
Calvin Roster Average Height: 76.1 In
Calvin Starter's Average Height (Veldhouse, Griffin, Veltema, Mantel, Katt): 77 In

Hope Roster Average Yr: 2.7 (1=Fr, 4=Sr)
Hope Starter's Average Yr: 3.6
Calvin Roster Average Yr: 2.5
Calvin Starter's Average Yr: 2.8

I am unsure of one roster spot for Hope.  The starters are just what I have ascertained from this board.  Obviously, they could change.

tas:  The interesting thing to me about the Honderd years that you cite above is the fact Hope had some great teams with Gugino and Elliot (et al) at the same time.

Actually, I can't speak to any emotional maturation of the elder Schuster nor the current emotional maturity of the younger Schuster.

But I would say half-milers need that combination of brutish strength and graceful endurance present on the basketball court.

Not sure where your getting Hope' s numbers from, their roster has not been posted as of tonight.  Although your starting 5 is probably pretty close.

The mark against the Hope teams from 95 to 98 was that Calvin was a very average program at the time.  Transitioning from Douma to VandeStreak.  It took KVS a couple seasons to really bring in the right kind of players for Calvin.

Kzoo was pretty tough in 96 and the Albion team of 98 was the only team to keep Hope from 4 MIAA tournament wins.  Although the 97 Calvin team wasn't too bad, but Hope won both games by double digits, and Hope did pull out close wins at Calvin in 95, 96 and 98.

Indeed 90, 91,, and 92 were strong Hope squads but 93 Hope was pretty average.

It's my understanding that Hop'e roster has not been finalized. There are 3 players that are going to tryout for the next few days, with 1 or 2 being cut.  a returner from last year-greenan, a jv'er-bosch, and a late comer-canan.  4 frosh made the roster, as expected.

Im not sure if calvin has finalized their roster either, but i have been hearing some pretty promising things about junior captain Tim Katt.  His work ethic over the summer was second to none.  Whether it was weights or cardio work I heard coach VS was very impressed.  He is not the greatest offensive weapon calvin has but i admire his dedication and hard work.  Good luck to the knights this year.

Good.  KVS has shown in the past he likes to play a big bruiser who rebounds and plays strong defense if he doesn't feel he needs more scoring (most obvious example: Kroschell in 2000).  With Mantel, Veltema, Griffin and Caleb, there should be enough scoring.

Re: Koetsier....I had very high hopes for him when he came in.  He's struggled with injuries a lot, but I'm not expecting much of anything from him anymore.  He's basically like found money at this point.

On JV there's a big guy from Cali...I heard he was one of the biggest recruiting targets.  It'll be interesting to see if he can tear it up on JV.  I was hoping he'd be good enough to make varsity right away, but no dice I see.
