I believe I stated earlier this week that there are 4 frosh on the team, maybe not, and sharples is one of the four -with tanis, carter, and bowser.  Cody Canan and brandon Bosch were the last 2 that officially made the team today.  The roster is at 15 with Dan greenan unfortunately not making the roster this season.  My guess is that tanis/bowser will get some time in practice as  the 3rd PG in case DVS or carter get hurt because both can/have played pg in the past.

and i would think that tanis/bowser would be the 4th option. if greenan was a PG and gone, and canan is there as a SG, that would make sense that they're thinking of bosch for 3rd string PG.

not to be disrespectful, but BB is no PG.  Spark plug, defensive stopper, gets dirty but doesn't have the handles, mentality, or experience.  Jr year in college is a bit late to learn how to run the show, could suffice in practice though.

My suspicion is that Tyler Tanis and Kelvin Carter will be the guys fighting it out over 2nd & 3rd option for the point.

That roster for Hope is pretty much what I expected and hoped for, except for Cannan who really came from left field in my opinion.   The first I heard his name was in July when somewhat passed me a note saying he might give it a shot. Pretty cool to not play (is that right) in college at all and then pop onto an varsity roster already with a wealth of talent and experience.

I also have to admit its kind of strange to see 3 Sr's who have had very little contributions in games but who have been huge in practice preparation for the team in the past.  Hopefully they get their moment to shine this season.

Bosch was easily the best player on the floor at most times in the limited JV games I saw.  There were times I sort of thought he would have fit in just fine on the varsity last season.

So now we can settle back and let the anticipation build for another 4 1/2 weeks.  I like that roster, and I like it alot.

This looks like a really solid roster. And for the most part what we expected. I am really interested to hear/see Canan play down the road. The other note is wow are there a lot of seniors! I realize a few of them have mainly been practice players in the past but for those guys on JV this year it should give them some motivation knowing that there will be a lot of spots on the 08-09 roster open.

I am most interested to see what Zach Osburn contributes. As Lee mentioned in a previous blog he thought Zach looked solid in practice and may finally be in playing shape after adjusting from a year of football at NIU. It would sure be great to have a guy of his size coming off the bench to bump shoulders with Mantel and some other of the MIAA bigs.

I would agree about Zach, I think he could make the biggest impact with individual improvement.  The fact remains, Hope will play without a true center again, and having a big solidly built human in the paint couldn't hurt.  He showed some promise at times last season.  But I think Hope plays center by committee again, only this year they'll do it without the underrated contributions of Scott Richardson.  My bad feeling is Hope will find out just how great he was on defence very early in the season.

Without getting into who they might seriously recruit this winter, there are 2-34 kids that will play JV, that would be strong enough to play on other varsity teams in the league.  Not impact players or start, but good enough to make a roster.  If they work hard and stick it out a year, their will be playing time ahead.

Carter is a point guard, Tanis is not. Looking at the roster, this is where the ghost of Dustin Miller continues to haunt Hope. 1) he should be a second-year varsity point guard right now and 2) there's only one varsity player from that class.

True enough that Tanis is not a point guard - yet.  Brett Jager was not a point guard either when he came to Hope, but sometimes that switch happens (heck Cramer played point for a good part of a season, albiet due to injury).  I'm not saying it will with Tanis, but the possibility is there.

Here's a link to the official roster on the Hope website:

For Tanis to be a point guard, he would have to undo a decade of scorer's mentality, and completely revamp the way he sees and understands the game, in addition to the physical skills. There's nothing wrong with being a scorer but that's what Tanis is to the gills.

I just can't see how he and Carter would be in competition for point guard minutes, when Carter comes in with what coaches have called Neitzel-like point guard skills.

I don't think that ty and kelvin will be fighting for any minutes at pg.  Tanis is definitely their scoring guard, probably sooner than most people think.  The issue is the 3rd pg and I think that bowser/tanis are better canidates than the current 3rd option because they have both played some point in the past(truthfully I'm not sure if BB has played pg the past 2 years on jv).  If someone goes down, there are 2 pg's on the jv team they could pull up for the 3rd spot-carroll and keyser.  Enough of beating a daed horse.

Does anyone know if, in fact, hope is playing a UofD on Nov.6?

On the PG issue, Kevin Tonn played PG for the JV last year and he impressed me.  We'll see where he ranks on the JV PG depth chart.

i knew hope's roster always seemed big... :)

if hope does the "3 - platoon" system it has in recent years, the groups on the floor could look like:

starters = derek, wolfe, marcus, reimink, klein
subs = carter, tanis, bowser, kratz, osburn
mop-up minutes = bosch, canan, glaser, sharples, holt

(no 16th man this year to work into the end-of-game blowouts either!)
