Will post this question in several areas where I know the data freaks lurk...

An interesting come-on on the Franklin and Marshall site:

"2nd in Division III wins over the last 25 years"   -  NEAT concept, but I wonder where the source of records is, who's in the top 10, top 20  -  Who's Number 1?
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Pulled together the Hope & Calvin numbers for the last 25 years.

Calvin - 499-179 - .740
Hope - 525-152 - .775

The only stats I could find for Franklin & Marshall only go back to the 93-94 season.  In that time frame they are:

F&M - 291-100 - .744

That roster for Hope is pretty much what I expected and hoped for, except for Cannan who really came from left field in my opinion.   The first I heard his name was in July when somewhat passed me a note saying he might give it a shot. Pretty cool to not play (is that right) in college at all and then pop onto an varsity roster already with a wealth of talent and experience.

Left field for sure!

I spoke with Josh Canan this weekend.  This is what he said about Cody:

His high school classmates would be seniors this year, but Cody Has taken light class loads at comm. college and last year at Hope, making him about a sophmore and a half.  However, he hasn't used any of his NCAA athletic eligibility, and he is an education major, so he's in what's typically a 5-yr major program.  I see he's listed as a Junior, but we theoretically could be seeing him for a few years.

So what has he been doing in terms of basketball these last few years?  Aside from playing recreationally, he has been coaching back at Calvin Christian--I think 7th grade.  Maybe CCMom could verify that?  Having not actively played in a program for a few years can't help, but I'm hoping his coaching experience could give him enough maturity and game-smarts to overcome any rustiness.

The biggest question in my mind is: will he be able to balance his academics and sports well enough that neither will suffer?  Josh told me Cody is just like him in this respect, so his advice to Cody is not to take 18 credit hours and try to play hoops.  We'll see how this plays out.

In the mean time, it will be interesting to see how Cody develops in Glen's program.  I seem to remember a team from California a dozen years ago or so that made it to the Final Four with a player who returned to college hoops after being out of high school for several years...   ;) ;) ;D

Hope's education program is generally 4 years, it's shorter length relative to other schools is part of what makes it stand out.

It seems as though there is a lot of confusion as to his eligibility, and I believe there are certain rules as to how long you have to play, regardless of how long you go to school. I'm not sure what it is, and I'm too lazy to look it up ;)

That's good advice to any student-athlete :)

The "10 Semester Rule" says that you have 10 semesters (who woulda thunk it) to complete you 4 years of eligibility.  There are a whole slew of exceptions to the rule, the main one is if you were enrolled at an institution that does not support your sport (and i don't know many schools that admit men that don't support men's basketball)

http://www.ncaa.org/library/membership/division_iii_manual/2007-08/2007-08_d3_manual.pdf

Quote14.2.2 Ten Semester/Fifteen-Quarter Rule. A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation
during the first 10 semesters or 15 quarters in which the student is enrolled in a collegiate institution in
at least a minimum full-time program of studies, as determined by the regulations of that institution. For an institution
that conducts registration other than on a traditional semester or quarter basis, the Management Council
shall determine an equivalent enrollment period.

There's actually a whole board discussing this topic

Then if Cody was not enrolled "in at least a minimum full-time program of studies" for any of those semesters--which Josh led me to believe--he'd have all of his eligibility remaining.  Of course, with the equivalent of 1.5 years of credits under his belt, I'm not under the impression that he'd stretch his academic career out long enough to use up 4 years of athletic eligibility...education major or not.  (Many students choose to finish that program at Hope in longer than 4 years, e.g. Greg Immink.)  It's feasible, however, he could play 3 years.  We'll just have to wait and see.
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

This is updated from this afternoon

and I believe it is their final roster, which as pointed out includes no Freshman and a small JV squad.  There seem to be a couple recruits I'd heard about missing.

Actually if you read the headings it's listed as Returners and Newcomers.  No true indication of who is varsity and who is JV.

Maybe I could've missed other posts on another board or not looked into it like should myself, but does anyone know how Calvin and Hope's winning percentages that FDF listed compared to other d3 programs?  I'm sure they're good, but just curious if someone has any more info.

sac

In the past 25 years there's little info but both seem to be near the top.  Its from another page, it would take alot of breaking down to come up with that list.

This is from last years NCAA basketball records book, I didn't update it, since it probably hasn't changed much.  First number is years, second win %.

By Percentage
Team Yrs. - Pct.
1. Wittenberg ..................................................... 95 - .715
2. Colby-Sawyer ................................................. 16 - .690
3. Cabrini .......................................................... 26 - .681
4. Calvin ............................................................ 87 - .674
5. Hope ............................................................. 100 - .668
6. Chris. Newport ............................................... 39 - .659
7. Wooster ......................................................... 105 - .656
8. Williams......................................................... 105 - .655
9. St. Joseph's (Me.) ............................................ 35 - .654
10. Staten Island ................................................... 28 - .652

Here's the victories list,  I updated the win totals through through 2007

1. Wittenberg .................................................... 95 - 1,559
2. Ill. Wesleyan .................................................. 97 - 1,431
3. Wooster ........................................................ 105 - 1,431

7. Springfield ..................................................... 97 - 1,300
8. Randolph-Macon ............................................ 93 - 1,288
9. Gust. Adolphus............................................... 97 - 1,284
10. Williams ........................................................ 105 - 1,284
11. Augustana (Ill.) ............................................... 101 1,276
12. Wis.-Eau Claire .............................................. 90 1,269
13. Scranton ........................................................ 89 1,254 **
14. Wis.-Stevens Point........................................... 108 1,253
15. Roanoke ........................................................ 93 1,250
16. Wheaton (Ill.) ................................................. 106 1,243
17. Calvin............................................................ 87 1,220
