According to the league calendar on the MIAA website, the Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches are meeting at Albion tomorrow at 10am.  I suspect we will see the coaches polls shortly thereafter.

Anyone want to predict what the results will be?

I do not have any great theory behind this especially after the top 4. Its more a gut feeling based on returning players and what I expect them to do. I am sure the coaches may disagree.

As far as the top goes Calvin returns 4 starters and should start the season off well and strongly. However, like Calvin last year Hope brings in a lot of freshman talent. I see a close race in the MIAA regular season with either a tie at the top or a one game separation. I like Hope to win the MIAA tourney though because at that point the freshmen should be solid contributors off the bench and I want some payback from last year.

The Hornets had a scrimmage vs Aquinas on Monday, but I didn't get a chance to check it out. Rumblings out of the coaches office in the AAC was that there were mixed results, like playing a team that has a couple of weeks of practice on you.

Kalamazoo has a Meet the Hornets coming up, and a Nov. 12th exhibition at Hillsdale. I'll be able to report more afterwards.

I'm going to have to recruit some more Hornet fans to the board.

Midline?

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Calvin's basketball preview is up....

http://www.calvin.edu/sports/preview/winter.htm#mbasket

"The 2006-07 Calvin men's basketball team finished the year with a flourish winning nine of its final 11 games including five of its final six. Included in the run were a pair of February victories over rival Hope and a March win at nationally-ranked Aurora University in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament."

Nice positive outlook and interesting published statistics...

Too bad Calvin ended the season just like they started it against Hope...   ;)

All kidding aside, it should be another tough battle at the top this year. Good luck to all the teams from the PNW!

Calvin's lack of experience on the frontline will keep them from winning the championship.
Hope will have enough firepower to overcome their lack of quickness at the guard positions to win a league
championship.

MVH will have a huge year and be league MVP.

SecretWeaponTK

I think the battle again will be between calvin and hope.  I am giving clavin an edge though.  I feel that Calvin has better leaders than hope does.  DVS is a head case and can be too emotional at times from what ive seen.  MVH is a good player i have seen instances of him getting distracted very easily especially from crowds.  Caleb and Derek for Calvin are experianced and don't seem to get rattled.  Calvin is very deep and has a good frontcourt with mantel.  Calvin will win the MIAA

The Hope preview is also up:

My favorite part:

"The Flying Dutchmen in 06-07 won a record 33rd MIAA crown and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II championships."

Ya gotta love it when your team is so good they invite you to move up a division just for the championship tournament.   :D :D
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

Raggs to Riches

I feel that secretweapon tk is in the right path. Calvin has tremendous talent on the wings and I am looking for someone to step up next to Mantel. As for chemistry Micah was a great motivator, but Griffin will take the lead next to Veldhouse. Hope will certainly miss Cramer's defense. This is going to be a great season.

Dark Knight

Did the DeVos get built a little aslant? It seems that all Hope players lean a little to the left:

Or maybe it's just politics.

Actually, they were facing northwest when taking these pictures, and their natural insticts caused them to lean away from... well, you know   ;D

A little short on proof readers in Holland?

"The team's 10th victory of the season will be the sixth under Van Wieren who ranks sixth among active NCAA Division III coaches with a 590-199 record."

What they were trying to say, is the 10th win this year will be the 600th win in Van Wieren's career.  Thats alot of damaged pockets.

Yeah, that one made me scratch my head for just a moment, too.

I was at the 400th and 500th win games.  I wonder how many other posters were, too?

If Hope gets thru the "pre-conference tournament season" with a perfect record, they will get that 10th W at home in the 2nd game of the Russ DeVette Holiday Classic.  I don't know how many games Mr. DeVette still gets to, but to have his predecessor and former coach present when he reaches such a milestone, I'm sure would be big for GVW.

If I am not mistaken the 500th was at Albion during the tourney where Hope beat Calvin in a great overtime battle.  If so, I was there and it was awesome.
