According to Eurobasket.com---1992 Hope grad, Wade Gugino was still competing in the French league last season, his 15th.  I believe he became a French citizen a number of years ago(thought I read that somewhere), and at 36 was obviously still playing professionally.  Knowing we graduated in the same class and he's playing professional basketball makes my knees hurt just thinking about it.

Hope assistant Eric Elliot completed 15 or 16 years playing in Sweden and Poland (maybe a couple others I'm forgetting) before "retiring" and moving back to West Michigan last year.

Playing in Europe doesn't have to be just a one or two year thing, its possible to make a career out of it.

There are also probably plenty of stories of players who spent only a year or two playing in Europe and did indeed come back and work on a career.

Different paths for different folks.

On the topic of playing overseas, here is a blog that might be of interest.  It is maintained by Illinois Wesleyan grad Zach Freeman ('07), a D3Hoops.com 1st Team All-American last year, chronicling his experiences playing in Germany for Phoenix Hagen...

I also meant to add this link...a video documenting a recent game for Zach's team.  It shows what the atmosphere is like...

Two of the All-Americans from North Park's threepeat national championship teams, Michael Harper and Modzel "Bud" Greer, spent many years as a part of European basketball. Harper played for about a decade in the Spanish and French premier leagues after his two-season NBA career with the Trailblazers ended. When he had finally had his fill of playing basketball, he returned to Portland to start his own insurance agency. Greer spent two decades playing and coaching in the Dutch league. He's now an assistant coach at NPU.

If you love basketball, what possible downside could there be to playing and/or coaching it overseas?

PicknRoll

very true very true...I do admit I think having that opportunity is one that would be impossible to turn down.

Glad to hear Dirk is back in action and E-Rock is still looking. I know E-Rock was tearing through the lower leagues in Germany so I am hoping he gets a chance to move up.

Dew Nation

Does anyone know how the Dutchmen fared this weekend?  I have been checking but have not found any updates.

None of mom's home-cooked meals!

I agree that for playing overseas could be a fantastic opportunity to do something you love while traveling the world (or part of it).  Seize the day!

I think I like the old uni's better. At least at first glance.

"I love roster heights.  ;D "  Amen Sac :)   It almost has reached the point they need to include a disclaimer with the roster something like:  "Any similarity between the player on the court, and the one in the roster is purely accidental". :D  I guess height and weight on roster is like horsehoes, and hand grenades.  "Close counts" ;)
What happened to the 6' 10" bean pole (Pals ?) from last years jv?  Just curious if he followed his brother?
