Nice find, al; interesting article. Just one quibble. Does anyone believe--as GVW was quoted as saying--that every one of Hope's varsity players could have taken a full-ride scholarship to play somewhere else? Either Glenn was not quoted accurately  :o or he got caught up in his own hyperbole.  :o :o

Yeah, I think that's a stretch (I'll assume unintentional).  It is true that some guys are offered full rides, but I would guess it's the minority of the players.

And I'm referring to all DIII players, not the Hope players (though they are included in the "all DIII players" group.

actually, he probably wasn't *too* far off...in this day when guys can get full $ for playing at Grace Bible, Davenport, Marygrove, etc. they don't need to be D-1 talents. they simply need to catch an eye of someone who's watching.

Yes, indeed.  A very nice article on Hope.  I especially liked the mention of Calvin, and the tie in the rivalry.  :D  Not to mention the 31-2 record at the De Vos. :)
If memory serves correct the NAIA schools give out the equilvalent of 6 full ride scholarships.  I doubt many players at CU or AQ or the others mentioned get a full ride.  There is a big difference between getting some scholarship assistance, and getting a full ride.  I am sure some kids take the partial scholarship $$ more as a stroke to the ego than for the actual total $$ they may get.  I have always thought that many MIAA players would easily start at most NAIA schools $$ or not.

It looks like Veltema spent time in the weight room.

I especially like the list of tri-captains.  Why settle for 3!?  Here is this year's crew:

Caleb Veldhouse
Derek Griffin
Tim Katt
Brent Schuster

(Does that mean we have a team and a third?)

Thank you Mr. Strunk for wearing the all black sneaks and socks! I just love it. It just bleeds East Kentwood. I think that he could have a real chance to be a good player at Calvin especially if he gets some solid minutes this year and learns from Derek Griffin. Then next year hopefully he will be able to step up and be the next good 2-guard in a long line before him. Brad Dyktstra, Scott Plaisier, Nate Karsten, Nate Burgess, Chris Prins, Kevin Broene, Kyle Trewhella, ahhh the memories. Sorry the other guards before him I never saw play in person.

I suspect that Schuster is a carryover from last year when his #42 belonged to Josh Meckes.

...but, you never know with this new math!

That makes sense.  I did notice previously that the * was listed by his name before the "other" captains had any sort of denotation.

Yeah, but how do you expect to be competitive with only one person not wearing a uniform, especially when your archrival has a whole row of Men in Khakis?

Before anyone raises any me-too speculation, I have it on the highest possible authority that new uniforms for Calvin were in the master plan. 8) ;)

Nice article - almost as nice as realizing that basketball season is here!!!  Tuesday night was fun. Some nice moments and some things to work on. On the other hand I'm thinking that UD had more on their "to-do" list than the Dutchmen did after the exhibition game. But a great opportunity to see how you look playing against D-1 competition rather than playing against your little brother.

On a lighter note, a couple of us had fun listening to UD's fight song  which sounded very similiar to Rodgers and Hammerstein's "I Enjoy Being A Girl."  Hmmmm....
